Stability of the Minkowski spacetime in Newman-Unti gauge

We prove small-data global stability of the Minkowski solution to Einstein's equations in a centre-normalised outgoing null-geodesic gauge. Our scheme involves first using the $r^p$-estimates of Dafermos-Rodnianski to control certain components of the Weyl tensor which satisfy a decoupled tensorial wave equation. Having established this control, all remaining geometric quantities are controlled by transport equations, taking initial conditions at a regular central axis. This method establishes global stability for initial data which decay only weakly to flat space and can establish additional asymptotic control when the data are assumed to have more structure.

(In)stability of de Sitter Quasinormal Mode spectra

We consider how the quasinormal spectrum for the conformal wave operator on the static patch of de Sitter changes in response to the addition of a small potential. Since the quasinormal modes and co-modes are explicitly known, we are able to give explicit formulae for the instantaneous rate of change of each frequency in terms of the perturbing potential. We verify these exact computations numerically using a novel technique extending the spectral hyperboloidal approach of Jaramillo et al. (2021). We propose a definition for a family of pseudospectra that we show capture the instability properties of the quasinormal frequencies.

Quasinormal modes of Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m-AdS: the approach to extremality

We consider the quasinormal spectrum of scalar and axial perturbations of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-AdS black hole as the horizon approaches extremality. By considering a foliation of the black hole by spacelike surfaces which intersect the future horizon we implement numerical methods which are well behaved up to and including the extremal limit and which admit initial data which is nontrivial at the horizon. As extremality is approached we observe a transition whereby the least damped mode ceases to be oscillatory in time, and the late time signal changes qualitatively as a consequence.

Quasinormal modes in extremal Reissner-Nordström spacetimes

We present a new framework for characterizing quasinormal modes (QNMs) or resonant states for the wave equation on asymptotically flat spacetimes, applied to the setting of extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes. We show that QNMs can be interpreted as honest eigenfunctions of generators of time translations acting on Hilbert spaces of initial data, corresponding to a suitable time slicing. The main difficulty that is present in the asymptotically flat setting, but is absent in the previously studied cases of asymptotically de Sitter or anti de Sitter sub-extremal black hole spacetimes, is that $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces are not suitable Hilbert space choices. Instead, we consider Hilbert spaces of functions that are additionally Gevrey regular at infinity and at the event horizon. We introduce $L^2$-based Gevrey estimates for the wave equation that are intimately connected to the existence of conserved quantities along null infinity and the event horizon. We relate this new framework to the traditional interpretation of quasinormal frequencies as poles of the meromorphic continuation of a resolvent operator and obtain new quantitative results in this setting.

A model problem for quasinormal ringdown on asymptotically flat or extremal black holes

We consider a wave equation with a potential on the half-line as a model problem for wave propagation close to an extremal horizon, or the asymptotically flat end of a black hole spacetime. We propose a definition of quasinormal frequencies (QNFs) as eigenvalues of the generator of time translations for a null foliation, acting on an appropriate (Gevrey based) Hilbert space. We show that this QNF spectrum is discrete in a subset of $\mathbb{C}$ which includes the region $\{$Re$(s) >-b$, $|$Im $(s)|> K\}$ for any $b>0$ and some $K=K(b) \gg 1$. As a corollary we establish the meromorphicity of the scattering resolvent in a sector $|$arg$(s)| <φ_0$ for some $φ_0 > \frac{2π}{3}$, and show that the poles occur only at quasinormal frequencies according to our definition. This result applies in situations where the method of complex scaling cannot be directly applied, as our potentials need not be analytic. Finally, we show that QNFs computed by the continued fraction method of Leaver are necessarily QNFs according to our new definition. This paper is a companion to [D. Gajic and C. Warnick, Quasinormal modes in extremal Reissner-Nordström spacetimes, preprint (2019)], which deals with the QNFs of the wave equation on the extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole.

Asymptotic properties of linear field equations in anti-de Sitter space

We study the global dynamics of the wave equation, Maxwell's equation and the linearized Bianchi equations on a fixed anti-de Sitter (AdS) background. Provided dissipative boundary conditions are imposed on the dynamical fields we prove uniform boundedness of the natural energy as well as both degenerate (near the AdS boundary) and non-degenerate integrated decay estimates. Remarkably, the non-degenerate estimates "lose a derivative". We relate this loss to a trapping phenomenon near the AdS boundary, which itself originates from the properties of (approximately) gliding rays near the boundary. Using the Gaussian beam approximation we prove that non-degenerate energy decay without loss of derivatives does not hold. As a consequence of the non-degenerate integrated decay estimates, we also obtain pointwise-in-time decay estimates for the energy. Our paper provides the key estimates for a proof of the non-linear stability of the anti-de Sitter spacetime under dissipative boundary conditions. Finally, we contrast our results with the case of reflecting boundary conditions.

Stability of the Toroidal AdS Schwarzschild Solution in the Einstein--Klein-Gordon System

We consider the stability of the toroidal AdS-Schwarzshild black holes as solutions of the Einstein--Klein-Gordon system, with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions for the scalar field. Restricting to perturbations that respect the toroidal symmetry we show both orbital and asymptotic stability for the full nonlinear problem, for a range of choices of the Klein-Gordon mass. The solutions we construct with Neumann boundary conditions have a Hawking mass which diverges towards infinity, reflecting the infinite energy of the Klein-Gordon field for perturbations satisfying these boundary conditions.

The Klein-Gordon equation on the toric adS-Schwarzschild black hole

We consider the Klein-Gordon equation on the exterior of the toric anti de-Sitter Schwarzschild black hole with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions at $\mathcal{I}$. We define a non-degenerate energy for the equation which controls the renormalised $H^1$ norm of the field. We then establish both decay and integrated decay of this energy through vector field methods. Finally we demonstrate the necessity of `losing a derivative' in the integrated energy estimate through the construction of a Gaussian beam staying in the exterior of the event horizon for arbitrary long co-ordinate time.

Optical Metrics and Projective Equivalence

Trajectories of light rays in a static spacetime are described by unparametrised geodesics of the Riemannian optical metric associated with the Lorentzian spacetime metric. We investigate the uniqueness of this structure and demonstrate that two different observers, moving relative to one another, who both see the universe as static may determine the geometry of the light rays differently. More specifically, we classify Lorentzian metrics admitting more than one hyper--surface orthogonal time--like Killing vector and analyze the projective equivalence of the resulting optical metrics. These metrics are shown to be projectively equivalent up to diffeomorphism if the static Killing vectors generate a group $SL(2, \R)$, but not projectively equivalent in general. We also consider the cosmological $C$--metrics in Einstein--Maxwell theory and demonstrate that optical metrics corresponding to different values of the cosmological constant are projectively equivalent.

Symmetries of the Dirac operator with skew-symmetric torsion

In this paper, we consider the symmetries of the Dirac operator derived from a connection with skew-symmetric torsion. We find that the generalized conformal Killing-Yano tensors give rise to symmetry operators of the massless Dirac equation, provided an explicitly given anomaly vanishes. We show that this gives rise to symmetries of the Dirac operator in the case of strong Kahler with torsion (KT) and strong hyper-Kahler with torsion (HKT) manifolds.

Semi-classical stability of AdS NUT instantons

The semi-classical stability of several AdS NUT instantons is studied. Throughout, the notion of stability is that of stability at the one-loop level of Euclidean Quantum Gravity. Instabilities manifest themselves as negative eigenmodes of a modified Lichnerowicz Laplacian acting on the transverse traceless perturbations. An instability is found for one branch of the AdS-Taub-Bolt family of metrics and it is argued that the other branch is stable. It is also argued that the AdS-Taub-NUT family of metrics are stable. A component of the continuous spectrum of the modified Lichnerowicz operator on all three families of metrics is found.
