Deploying and validating a metropolitan QKD secure network: architecture and field performance

The advent of cryptographically relevant quantum computers poses an existential threat to classical public-key infrastructure. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) addresses this challenge by providing information-theoretic security for key establishment, independently of any computational hardness assumption. In this work, the deployment and experimental validation of a metropolitan-scale quantum-secure network between data centers in Milan is reported. The network operates over installed fiber infrastructure and implements a layered architecture integrating QKD hardware, standards-compliant Key Management (KM), and centralized Software-Defined Networking (SDN) orchestration. Dynamic path reconfiguration via active optical switching and trusted-node routing allow automated fail-over solutions. Application-layer validation across diverse protocols and workloads confirms the seamless interoperability of all system components. These results establish the technical and operational readiness of metropolitan QKD networks for production deployment, and offer a replicable blueprint for building quantum-secure communication infrastructure at metropolitan scale.

Send the Key in Cleartext: Halving Key Consumption while Preserving Unconditional Security in QKD Authentication

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols require Information-Theoretically Secure (ITS) authentication of the classical channel to preserve the unconditional security of the distilled key. Standard ITS schemes are based on one-time keys: once a key is used to authenticate a message, it must be discarded. Since QKD requires mutual authentication, two independent one-time keys are typically consumed per round, imposing a non-trivial overhead on the net secure key rate. In this work, we present the authentication-with-response scheme, a novel ITS authentication scheme based on $\varepsilon$-Almost Strongly Universal$_2$ ($\varepsilon$-ASU$_2$) functions, whose IT security can be established in the Universal Composability (UC) framework. The scheme achieves mutual authentication consuming a single one-time key per QKD round, halving key consumption compared to the state-of-the-art.

Free-space time-bin encoded quantum key distribution from near- to mid-infrared wavelengths

Quantum technologies play a central role in establishing new ways of quantum-secured communication. We investigate Free-Space Quantum Communication and explore the advantage of implementing Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) with weak coherent states produced by a light source in the Mid-Infrared (>3$μ$m). We simulate time-bin encoded quantum key distribution and demonstrate that a free-space QKD link operating in the Mid-infrared outperforms configurations based on conventional near-infrared wavelengths under various weather scenarios, with a particular significance in adverse meteorological conditions.

Performance of Cascade and LDPC-codes for Information Reconciliation on Industrial Quantum Key Distribution Systems

Information Reconciliation is a critical component of Quantum Key Distribution, ensuring that mismatches between Alice's and Bob's keys are corrected. In this study, we analyze, simulate, optimize, and compare the performance of two prevalent algorithms used for Information Reconciliation: Cascade and LDPC codes in combination with the Blind protocol. We focus on their applicability in practical and industrial settings, operating in realistic and application-close conditions. The results are further validated through evaluation on a live industrial QKD system.

Quantum Key Distribution over 100 km underwater optical fiber assisted by a Fast-Gated Single-Photon Detector

Nowadays Quantum Key Distribution represents the most mature quantum technology, and multiple countries as well as private institutions are building their quantum network. However, QKD devices are still far from representing a product within everyone's reach. Indeed, limitations in terms of compatibility with existing telecom infrastructure and limited performances in terms of secret key rate, using non-cryogenic detection systems, are still critical. In this work, we implemented a quantum key distribution link between Sicily (Italy) and Malta utilizing two different Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) detectors. The performances of a standard commercial SPAD have been compared with the results achieved with a new prototype of fast-gated System in a Package (SiP) SPAD; the SiP detector has shown to be able to accomplish a fourteen times higher key rate compared with the commercial device over the channel showing 20 dB of losses.

The Linear Span of Uniform Matrix Product States

The variety of uniform matrix product states arises both in algebraic geometry as a natural generalization of the Veronese variety, and in quantum many-body physics as a model for a translation-invariant system of sites placed on a ring. Using methods from linear algebra, representation theory, and invariant theory of matrices, we study the linear span of this variety.

Dimension of Tensor Network varieties

The tensor network variety is a variety of tensors associated to a graph and a set of positive integer weights on its edges, called bond dimensions. We determine an upper bound on the dimension of the tensor network variety. A refined upper bound is given in cases relevant for applications such as varieties of matrix product states and projected entangled pairs states. We provide a range (the "supercritical range") of the parameters where the upper bound is sharp.
