Schrödinger ultrahyperbolic equations with singular coefficients

In this paper we investigate the Cauchy problem for Schrödinger ultrahyperbolic equations with singular (less than continuous) coefficients. We prove $H^\infty$ well-posedness in the very weak sense under suitable assumptions of the distributional structure of the coefficients and decay on the lower order terms. Consistency is proven with the classical $H^\infty$-results when the equation coefficients are smooth.

Schwartz very weak solutions for Schrödinger type equations with distributional coefficients

This paper continues the analysis of Schrödinger type equations with distributional coefficients initiated by the authors in [3]. Here we consider coefficients that are tempered distributions with respect to the space variable and are continuous in time. We prove that the corresponding Cauchy problem, which in general cannot even be stated in the standard distributional setting, admits a Schwartz very weak solution which is unique modulo negligible perturbations. Consistency with the classical theory is proved in the case of regular coefficients and Schwartz Cauchy data.

$C^\infty$ well-posedness of higher order hyperbolic pseudo-differential equations with multiplicities

In this paper, we study higher order hyperbolic pseudo-differential equations with variable multiplicities. We work in arbitrary space dimension and we assume that the principal part is time-dependent only. We identify sufficient conditions on the roots and the lower order terms (Levi conditions) under which the corresponding Cauchy problem is $C^\infty$ well-posed. This is achieved via transformation into a first order system, reduction into upper-triangular form and application of suitable Fourier integral operator methods previously developed for hyperbolic non-diagonalisable systems. We also discuss how our result compares with the literature on second and third order hyperbolic equations.

Schrödinger type equations with singular coefficients and lower order terms

In this paper we investigate the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a Schrödinger operator with singular lower order terms. We allow distributional coefficients and we approach this problem via the regularising methods at the core of the theory of very weak solutions. We prove that a very weak solution exists and it is unique modulo negligible perturbations. Very weak solutions converge to classical solutions when the equation coefficients are regular enough.

Hyperbolic systems with non-diagonalisable principal part and variable multiplicities, III: singular coefficients

In this paper we continue the analysis of non-diagonalisable hyperbolic systems initiated in \cite{GarJRuz, GarJRuz2}. Here we assume that the system has discontinuous coefficients or more in general distributional coefficients. Well-posedness is proven in the very weak sense for systems with singularities with respect to the space variable or the time variable. Consistency with the classical theory is proven in the case of smooth coefficients.

On the wave equation with space dependent coefficients: singularities and lower order terms

This paper complements the study of the wave equation with discontinuous coefficients initiated in \cite{DGL:22} in the case of time-dependent coefficients. Here we assume that the equation coefficients are depending on space only and we formulate Levi conditions on the lower order terms to guarantee the existence of a very weak solution as defined in \cite{GR:14}. As a toy model we study the wave equation in conservative form with discontinuous velocity and we provide a qualitative analysis of the corresponding very weak solution via numerical methods.

On higher order hyperbolic equations with space-dependent coefficients: $C^\infty$ well-posedness and Levi conditions

This paper contributes to the wider study of hyperbolic equations with multiplicities. We focus here on some classes of higher order hyperbolic equations with space dependent coefficients in any space dimension. We prove Sobolev well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem (with loss of derivatives due to the multiplicities) under suitable Levi conditions on the lower order terms. These conditions generalise the well known Olienik's conditions in \cite{O70} to orders higher than $2$.

Inhomogeneous wave equation with $t$-dependent singular coefficients

This paper is devoted to the study of the inhomogeneous wave equation with singular (less than continuous) time dependent coefficients. Particular attention is given to the role of the lower order terms and suitable Levi conditions are formulated in order to obtain a very weak solution as introduced in \cite{GR:14}. Very weak solutions for this kind of equations are also investigated from a numerical point of view in two toy models: the wave equation with a Heaviside function and a delta distribution, respectively, as coefficient in its principal part.

On the wave equation with multiplicities and space-dependent irregular coefficients

In this paper we study the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a wave equation with multiplicities and space-dependent irregular coefficients. As in \cite{GR:14} in order to give a meaningful notion of solution, we employ the notion of very weak solution, which construction is based on a parameter dependent regularisation of the coefficients via mollifiers. We prove that, even with distributional coefficients, a very weak solution exists for our Cauchy problem and it converges to the classical one when the coefficients are smooth. The dependence on the mollifiers of very weak solutions is investigated at the end of the paper in some instructive examples.

Hyperbolic systems with non-diagonalisable principal part and variable multiplicities, I. Well-posedness

In this paper we analyse the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a rather general class of hyperbolic systems with space-time dependent coefficients and with multiple characteristics of variable multiplicity. First, we establish a well-posedness result in anisotropic Sobolev spaces for systems with upper triangular principal part under interesting natural conditions on the orders of lower order terms below the diagonal. Namely, the terms below the diagonal at a distance $k$ to it must be of order $-k$. This setting also allows for the Jordan block structure in the system. Second, we give conditions for the Schur type triangularisation of general systems with variable coefficients for reducing them to the form with an upper triangular principal part for which the first result can be applied. We give explicit details for the appearing conditions and constructions for $2\times 2$ and $3\times 3$ systems, complemented by several examples.

Well-posedness of hyperbolic systems with multiplicities and smooth coefficients

We study hyperbolic systems with multiplicities and smo\-oth coefficients. In the case of non-analytic, smooth coefficients, we prove well-posedness in any Gevrey class and when the coefficients are analytic, we prove $C^\infty$ well-posedness. The proof is based on a transformation to block Sylvester form introduced by D'Ancona and Spagnolo in Ref. 9 which increases the system size but does not change the eigenvalues. This reduction introduces lower order terms for which appropriate Levi-type conditions are found. These translate then into conditions on the original coefficient matrix. This paper can be considered as a generalisation of Ref. 12, where weakly hyperbolic higher order equations with lower order terms were considered.

On $C^\infty$ well-posedness of hyperbolic systems with multiplicities

In this paper we study first order hyperbolic systems with multiple characteristics (weakly hyperbolic) and time-dependent analytic coefficients. The main question is when the Cauchy problem for such systems is well-posed in $C^{\infty}$ and in $\mathcal{D}'$. We prove that the analyticity of the coefficients combined with suitable hypotheses on the eigenvalues guarantee the $C^\infty$ well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem. This result is an extension to systems of the analogous results for scalar equations recently obtained by Jannelli and Taglialatela in \cite{JT} and by the authors in \cite{GR:13}.

On hyperbolic systems with time dependent Hölder characteristics

In this paper we study the well-posedness of weakly hyperbolic systems with time dependent coefficients. We assume that the eigenvalues are low regular, in the sense that they are Hölder with respect to $t$. In the past these kind of systems have been investigated by Yuzawa \cite{Yu:05} and Kajitani \cite{KY:06} by employing semigroup techniques (Tanabe-Sobolevski method). Here, under a certain uniform property of the eigenvalues, we improve the Gevrey well-posedness result of \cite{Yu:05} and we obtain well-posedness in spaces of ultradistributions as well. Our main idea is a reduction of the system to block Sylvester form and then the formulation of suitable energy estimates inspired by the treatment of scalar equations in \cite{GR:11}

On hyperbolic equations and systems with non-regular time dependent coefficients

In this paper we study higher order weakly hyperbolic equations with time dependent non-regular coefficients. The non-regularity here means less than Hölder, namely bounded coefficients. As for second order equations in \cite{GR:14} we prove that such equations admit a `very weak solution' adapted to the type of solutions that exist for regular coefficients. The main idea in the construction of a very weak solution is the regularisation of the coefficients via convolution with a mollifier and a qualitative analysis of the corresponding family of classical solutions depending on the regularising parameter. Classical solutions are recovered as limit of very weak solutions. Finally, by using a reduction to block Sylvester form we conclude that any first order hyperbolic system with non-regular coefficients is solvable in the very weak sense.

Wave equation for sums of squares on compact Lie groups

In this paper we investigate the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the wave equation for sums of squares of vector fields on compact Lie groups. We obtain the loss of regularity for solutions to the Cauchy problem in local Sobolev spaces depending on the order to which the Hörmander condition is satisfied, but no loss in globally defined spaces. We also establish Gevrey well-posedness for equations with irregular coefficients and/or multiple characteristics. As in the Sobolev spaces, if formulated in local coordinates, we observe well-posedness with the loss of local Gevrey order depending on the order to which the Hörmander condition is satisfied.

Hyperbolic second order equations with non-regular time dependent coefficients

In this paper we study weakly hyperbolic second order equations with time dependent irregular coefficients. This means to assume that the coefficients are less regular than Hölder. The characteristic roots are also allowed to have multiplicities. For such equations, we describe the notion of a `very weak solution' adapted to the type of solutions that exist for regular coefficients. The construction is based on considering Friedrichs-type mollifiers of coefficients and corresponding classical solutions, and their quantitative behaviour in the regularising parameter. We show that even for distributional coefficients, the Cauchy problem does have a very weak solution, and that this notion leads to classical or ultradistributional solutions under conditions when such solutions also exist. In concrete applications, the dependence on the regularising parameter can be traced explicitly.

On weakly hyperbolic equations with analytic principal part

In this paper we show how to include low order terms in the $C^{\infty}$ well-posedness results for weakly hyperbolic equations with analytic time-dependent coefficients. This is achieved by doing a different reduction to a system from the previously used one. We find the Levi conditions such that the $C^{\infty}$ well-posedness continues to hold.
