General Lepton Mixing in Holographic Composite Higgs Models

We introduce a scenario of lepton mixing in holographic composite Higgs models based on non-abelian discrete symmetries of the form G_f=X x Z_N, broken to Z_2 x Z_2 x Z_N in the elementary sector and to Z_N^(D) in the composite sector with Z_N^(D) being the diagonal subgroup of a Z_N contained in X and the external Z_N. By choosing X = Delta(96) or Delta(384), a non-vanishing theta_{13} of order 0.1 is naturally obtained. We apply our considerations to a 5D model in warped space for the particular cases of X = S_4, A_5, Delta(96) and Delta(384) and N=3 or 5. Lepton flavour violating processes and electric dipole moments are well below the current bounds, with the exception of mu -> e gamma that puts a very mild constraint on the parameter space of the model, for all presented choices of G_f.

Finite Modular Groups and Lepton Mixing

We study lepton mixing patterns which are derived from finite modular groups Gamma_N, requiring subgroups G_nu and G_e to be preserved in the neutrino and charged lepton sectors, respectively. We show that only six groups Gamma_N with N=3,4,5,7,8,16 are relevant. A comprehensive analysis is presented for G_e arbitrary and G_nu=Z2 x Z2, as demanded if neutrinos are Majorana particles. We discuss interesting patterns arising from both groups G_e and G_nu being arbitrary. Several of the most promising patterns are specific deviations from tri-bimaximal mixing, all predicting theta_13 non-zero as favoured by the latest experimental data. We also comment on prospects to extend this idea to the quark sector.

Leptons in Holographic Composite Higgs Models with Non-Abelian Discrete Symmetries

We study leptons in holographic composite Higgs models, namely in models possibly admitting a weakly coupled description in terms of five-dimensional (5D) theories. We introduce two scenarios leading to Majorana or Dirac neutrinos, based on the non-abelian discrete group $S_4\times \Z_3$ which is responsible for nearly tri-bimaximal lepton mixing. The smallness of neutrino masses is naturally explained and normal/inverted mass ordering can be accommodated. We analyze two specific 5D gauge-Higgs unification models in warped space as concrete examples of our framework. Both models pass the current bounds on Lepton Flavour Violation (LFV) processes. We pay special attention to the effect of so called boundary kinetic terms that are the dominant source of LFV. The model with Majorana neutrinos is compatible with a Kaluza-Klein vector mass scale $m_{KK}\gtrsim 3.5$ TeV, which is roughly the lowest scale allowed by electroweak considerations. The model with Dirac neutrinos, although not considerably constrained by LFV processes and data on lepton mixing, suffers from a too large deviation of the neutrino coupling to the $Z$ boson from its Standard Model value, pushing $m_{KK}\gtrsim 10$ TeV.

Discrete Flavour Symmetries in Light of T2K

We show that a non-vanishing angle theta_13 of order 0.1 can be predicted in the framework of discrete flavour symmetries. We assume that left-handed leptons transform as triplets under a group G_f which is broken in such a way that neutrino and charged lepton sectors remain invariant under the subgroups G_nu and G_e of G_f, respectively. In this limit mixing angles and the Dirac CP violating phase delta_CP are determined. By choosing G_f=Delta(6 n^2) (n=4,8), G_nu=Z_2 x Z_2 and G_e=Z_3 we find sin^2 theta_13=0.045(0.011) for n=4(8). At the same time theta_23 and theta_12 remain close to their experimental best fit values, particularly in the case n=8, where sin^2 theta_23 = 0.424 and sin^2 theta_12 = 0.337. delta_CP is predicted to be 0 or pi so that CP is conserved in our examples.

mu-tau Symmetry and Charged Lepton Mass Hierarchy in a Supersymmetric D4 Model

In this note we discuss a supersymmetric (SUSY) D4 x Z5 model which leads to vanishing reactor mixing angle theta_13=0 and maximal atmospheric mixing theta_23=pi/4 in the lepton sector at leading order (LO), due to the preservation of non-trivial distinct D4 subgroups in the charged lepton and neutrino sectors, respectively. The solar mixing angle theta_12 remains undetermined and is expected to be of order one. Since right-handed charged leptons transform as singlets under D4, the charged lepton mass hierarchy can be naturally accounted for. The model predicts inverted mass hierarchy for neutrinos. Additionally, we show that, unlike in most of the other models of this type, all vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of gauge singlets (flavons) can be fixed through mass parameters of the superpotential. Next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to lepton masses and mixings are calculated and shown to be under control, especially the corrections to theta_23=pi/4 and theta_13=0 are of the order of the generic expansion parameter epsilon = 0.04 and arise dominantly from the charged lepton sector.

A SUSY GUT of Flavour with S4 x SU(5) to NLO

We construct a Supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unified Theory (GUT) of Flavour based on S4 x SU(5), together with an additional (global or local) Abelian symmetry, and study it to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. The model includes a successful description of quark and lepton masses and mixing angles at leading order (LO) incorporating the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin (GST) relation and the Georgi-Jarlskog (GJ) relations. We study the vacuum alignment arising from F-terms to NLO and such corrections are shown to have a negligible effect on the results for fermion masses and mixings achieved at LO. Tri-bimaximal (TB) mixing in the neutrino sector is predicted very accurately up to NLO corrections of order 0.1%. Including charged lepton mixing corrections implies small deviations from TB mixing described by a precise sum rule, accurately maximal atmospheric mixing and a reactor mixing angle close to three degrees.

Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing and Quark Masses from a Discrete Flavour Symmetry

We build a supersymmetric model of quark and lepton masses based on the discrete flavour symmetry group T', the double covering of A_4. In the lepton sector our model is practically indistinguishable from recent models based on A_4 and, in particular, it predicts a nearly tri-bimaximal mixing, in good agreement with present data. In the quark sector a realistic pattern of masses and mixing angles is obtained by exploiting the doublet representations of T', not available in A_4. To this purpose, the flavour symmetry T' should be broken spontaneously along appropriate directions in flavour space. In this paper we fully discuss the related vacuum alignment problem, both at the leading order and by accounting for small effects coming from higher-order corrections. As a result we get the relations: \sqrt{m_d/m_s}\approx |V_{us}| and \sqrt{m_d/m_s}\approx |V_{td}/V_{ts}|.

Vacuum Alignment in SUSY A4 Models

In this note we discuss the vacuum alignment in supersymmetric models with spontaneously broken flavour symmetries in the presence of soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking terms. We show that the inclusion of soft SUSY breaking terms can give rise to non-vanishing vacuum expectation values (VEVs) for the auxiliary components of the flavon fields. These non-zero VEVs can have an important impact on the phenomenology of this class of models, since they can induce an additional flavour violating contribution to the sfermion soft mass matrix of right-left (RL) type. We carry out an explicit computation in a class of SUSY A4 models predicting tri-bimaximal mixing in the lepton sector. The flavour symmetry breaking sector is described in terms of flavon and driving supermultiplets. We find non-vanishing VEVs for the auxiliary components of the flavon fields and for the scalar components of the driving fields which are of order m_{SUSY} x and m_{SUSY}, respectively. Thereby, m_{SUSY} is the generic soft SUSY breaking scale which is expected to be around 1 TeV and is the VEV of scalar components of the flavon fields. Another effect of these VEVs can be the generation of a mu term.

Lepton Flavour Violation in a Supersymmetric Model with A4 Flavour Symmetry

We compute the branching ratios for mu-> e gamma, tau-> mu gamma and tau -> e gamma in a supersymmetric model invariant under the flavour symmetry group A4 X Z3 X U(1)_{FN}, in which near tri-bimaximal lepton mixing is naturally predicted. At leading order in the small symmetry breaking parameter u, which is of the same order as the reactor mixing angle theta_{13}, we find that the branching ratios generically scale as u^2. Applying the current bound on the branching ratio of mu -> e gamma shows that small values of u or tan(beta) are preferred in the model for mass parameters m_{SUSY} and m_{1/2} smaller than 1000 GeV. The bound expected from the on-going MEG experiment will provide a severe constraint on the parameter space of the model either enforcing u approx 0.01 and small tan(beta) or m_{SUSY} and m_{1/2} above 1000 GeV. In the special case of universal soft supersymmetry breaking terms in the flavon sector a cancellation takes place in the amplitudes and the branching ratios scale as u^4, allowing for smaller slepton masses. The branching ratios for tau -> mu gamma and tau -> e gamma are predicted to be of the same order as the one for mu -> e gamma, which precludes the possibility of observing these tau decays in the near future.

The Cabibbo Angle in a Supersymmetric D14 Model

We construct a supersymmetric model with the flavor symmetry D14 in which the CKM matrix element |V_{ud}| can take the value |V_{ud}| =cos (pi/14) = 0.97493 implying that the Cabibbo angle theta_C is sin (theta_C) = |V_{us}| = sin (pi/14) = 0.2225. These values are very close to those observed in experiments. The value of |V_{ud}| (theta_C) is based on the fact that different Z2 subgroups of D14 are conserved in the up and down quark sector. In order to achieve this, D14 is accompanied by a Z3 symmetry. The spontaneous breaking of D14 is induced by flavons, which are scalar gauge singlets. The quark mass hierarchy is partly due to the flavor group D14 and partly due to a Froggatt-Nielsen symmetry U(1)_{FN} under which only the right-handed quarks transform. The model is completely natural in the sense that the hierarchies among the quark masses and mixing angles are generated with the help of symmetries. The issue of the vacuum alignment of the flavons is solved up to a small number of degeneracies, leaving four different possible values for |V_{ud}|. Out of these, only one of them leads to a phenomenological viable model. A study of the Z2 subgroup breaking terms shows that the results achieved in the symmetry limit are only slightly perturbed. At the same time they allow |V_{ud}| (theta_C) to be well inside the small experimental error bars.

Lepton Mixing and Cancellation of the Dirac Mass Hierarchy in SO(10) GUTs with Flavor Symmetries T7 and Sigma(81)

In SO(10) grand unified theories (GUTs) the hierarchy which is present in the Dirac mass term of the neutrinos is generically as strong as the one in the up-type quark mass term. We propose a mechanism to partially or completely cancel this hierarchy in the light neutrino mass matrix in the seesaw context. The two main ingredients of the cancellation mechanism are the existence of three fermionic gauge singlets and of a discrete flavor symmetry G_f which is broken at a higher scale than SO(10). Two realizations of the cancellation mechanism are presented. The realization based on the Frobenius group T7 = Z7 x Z3 leads to a partial cancellation of the hierarchy and relates maximal 2-3 lepton mixing with the geometric hierarchy of the up-quark masses. In the realization with the group Sigma(81) the cancellation is complete and tri-bimaximal lepton mixing is reproduced at the lowest order. In both cases, to fully accommodate the leptonic data we take into account additional effects such as effects of higher-dimensional operators involving more than one flavon. The heavy neutral fermion mass spectra are considered. For both realizations we analyze the flavon potential at the renormalizable level as well as ways to generate the Cabibbo angle.

Theory of the Neutrino Mass

Theoretical aspects of neutrino physics are reviewed, with emphasis on possible explanations of the smallness of neutrino masses and of the peculiar mixing pattern observed in the lepton sector. Some theoretically motivated frameworks, such as those based on spontaneously broken discrete flavour symmetries, are discussed, stressing the importance of low-energy observables, like anomalous magnetic moments, electric dipole moments and lepton flavour violating transitions, to test further features of these models.

Lepton Flavour Violation in Models with A4 Flavour Symmetry

We analyze lepton flavour violating transitions, leptonic magnetic dipole moments (MDMs) and electric dipole moments (EDMs) in a class of models characterized by the flavour symmetry A4 x Z3 x U(1)_{FN}, whose choice is motivated by the approximate tri-bimaximal mixing observed in neutrino oscillations. We construct the relevant low-energy effective Lagrangian where these effects are dominated by dimension six operators, suppressed by the scale M of new physics. All the flavour breaking effects are universally described by the vacuum expectation values of a set of spurions. We separately analyze both a supersymmetric and a general case. While the observed discrepancy delta a_mu in the anomalous MDM of the muon suggests M of order of a few TeV, several data require M above 10 TeV, in particular the limit on EDM of the electron. In the general case also the present limit on BR(mu -> e gamma) requires M >10 TeV, at least. The branching ratios for mu -> e gamma, tau -> mu gamma and tau -> e gamma are all expected to be of the same order. In the supersymmetric case the constraint from mu -> e gamma is softened and it can be satisfied by a smaller scale M. In this case both the observed delta a_mu and the current bound on BR(mu -> e gamma) can be satisfied, at the price of a rather small value for | |, of the order of a few percents, that reflects on a similar value for theta_{13}.

A SUSY SU(5) Grand Unified Model of Tri-Bimaximal Mixing from A4

We discuss a grand unified model based on SUSY SU(5) in extra dimensions and on the flavour group A4xU(1) which, besides reproducing tri-bimaximal mixing for neutrinos with the accuracy required by the data, also leads to a natural description of the observed pattern of quark masses and mixings.

Stability of Texture Zeros under Radiative Corrections in See-Saw Models

It has been shown that only certain neutrino mass matrices with texture zeros are compatible with existing data. We discuss the stability of phenomenological consequences of texture zeros under radiative corrections in the type-I see-saw scenario. We show that under certain conditions additional patterns are allowed due to these effects.
