Gravitational and electromagnetic signatures of accretion into a charged black hole

We present the derivation and the solutions to the coupled electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations with sources in a charged black hole background. We work in the so called ghost gauge and consider as source of the perturbations the infall of radial currents. In this way, we study a system in which it is provoked a response involving both, gravitational and electromagnetic waves, which allows us to analyze the dependence between them. We solve numerically the wave equations that describe both signals, characterize the waveforms and study the relation between the input parameters of the infalling matter with those of the gravitational and electromagnetic responses.

Black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics: quasi-normal spectra and parity splitting

We discuss the quasi-normal oscillations of black holes which are sourced by a nonlinear electrodynamic field. While previous studies have focused on the computation of quasi-normal frequencies for the wave or higher spin equation on a fixed background geometry described by such black holes, here we compute for the first time the quasi-normal frequencies for the coupled electromagnetic-gravitational linear perturbations. To this purpose, we consider a parametrized family of Lagrangians for the electromagnetic field which contains the Maxwell Lagrangian as a special case. In the Maxwell case, the unique spherically symmetric black hole solutions are described by the Reissner-Nordström family and in this case it is well-known that the quasi-normal spectra in the even- and odd-parity sectors are identical to each other. However, when moving away from the Maxwell case, we obtain deformed Reissner-Nordström black holes, and we show that in this case there is a parity splitting in the quasi-normal mode spectra. A partial explanation for this phenomena is provided by considering the eikonal (high-frequency) limit.

Present accelerated expansion of the universe from new Weyl-Integrable gravity approach

We investigate if a recently introduced formulation of general relativity on a Weyl-integrable geometry, contains cosmological solutions exhibiting acceleration in the present cosmic expansion. We derive the general conditions to have acceleration in the expansion of the universe and obtain a particular solution for the Weyl scalar field describing a cosmological model for the present time in concordance with the data combination Planck + WP + BAO + SN.

Electromagnetic partner of the gravitational signal during accretion onto black holes

We investigate the generation of electromagnetic and gravitational radiation in the vicinity of a perturbed Schwarzschild black hole. The gravitational perturbations and the electromagnetic field are studied by solving the Teukolsky master equation with sources, which we take to be locally charged, radially infalling, matter. Our results show that, in addition to the gravitational wave generated as the matter falls into the black hole, there is also a burst of electromagnetic radiation. This electromagnetic field has a characteristic set of quasinormal frequencies, and the gravitational radiation has the quasinormal frequencies of a Schwarzschild black hole. This scenario allows us to compare the gravitational and electromagnetic signals that are generated by a common source.

The primordial explosion of a false white hole from a 5D vacuum

We explore the cosmological consequences of some possible big bang produced by a black-hole with mass $M$ in an 5D extended SdS. Under these particular circumstances, the effective 4D metric obtained by the use of a constant foliation on the extra coordinate is comported as a false white-hole (FWH), which evaporates for all unstable modes that have wavelengths bigger than the size of the FWH. Outside the white hole the repulsive gravitational field can be considered as weak, so that the dynamics for fluctuations of the inflaton field and the scalar perturbations of the metric can be linearized.

Scalar fluctuations of the scalar metric during inflation from a non-perturbative 5D large-scale repulsive gravity model

We develop a non-perturbative formalism for scalar metric fluctuations from a 5D extended version of general relativity in vacuum. In this work we concentrate our efforts on calculations valid on large cosmological scales, which are the dominant during the inflationary phase of the universe. The resulting metric in this limit is obtained after implementing a planar coordinate transformation on a 5D Ricci-flat metric solution. We calculate the spectrum of these fluctuations with an effective 4D Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime on cosmological scales, which is obtained after we make a static foliation on the non-compact extra coordinate. Our results show how the squared metric fluctuations of the primordial universe become scale invariant with the inflationary expansion.

Gravitational waves during inflation from a 5D large-scale repulsive gravity model

We investigate, in the transverse traceless (TT) gauge, the generation of the relic background of gravitational waves, generated during an early inflationary stage, on the framework of a large-scale repulsive gravity model. We calculate the spectrum of the tensor metric fluctuations of an effective 4D Schwarzschild-de-Sitter metric, which is obtained after implementing a planar coordinate transformation on a 5D Ricci-flat metric solution, in the context of a non-compact Kaluza-Klein theory of gravity. We found that the spectrum is nearly scale invariant under certain conditions. One interesting aspect of this model is that is possible to derive dynamical field equations for the tensor metric fluctuations, valid not just at cosmological scales, but also at astrophysical scales, from the same theoretical model. The astrophysical and cosmological scales are determined by the gravity- antigravity radius, which is a natural length scale of the model, that indicates when gravity becomes repulsive in nature.

Spherically symmetric solution in a space-time with torsion

By using the method of group analysis, we obtain a new exact evolving and spherically symmetric solution of the Einstein-Cartan equations of motion, corresponding to a space-time threaded with a three-form Kalb-Ramond field strength. The solution describes in its more generic form, a space-time which scalar curvature vanishes for large distances and for large time. In static conditions, it reduces to a classical wormhole solution and to a exact solution with a localized scalar field and a torsion kink, already reported in literature. In the process we have found evidence towards the construction of more new solutions.

Gravitational waves from scalar field accretion

Our aim in this work is to outline some physical consequences of the interaction between black holes and scalar field halos in terms of gravitational waves. In doing so, the black hole is taken as a static and spherically symmetric gravitational source, {\it i. e.} the Schwarzschild black hole, and we work within the test field approximation, considering that the scalar field lives in the curved space-time outside the black hole. We focused on the emission of gravitational waves when the black hole is perturbed by the surrounding scalar field matter. The symmetries of the spacetime and the simplicity of the matter source allow, by means of a spherical harmonic decomposition, to study the problem by means of a one dimensional description. Some properties of such gravitational waves are discussed as a function of the parameters of the infalling scalar field, and allow us to make the conjecture that the gravitational waves carry information on the type of matter that generated them.

Randall-Sundrum brane cosmology: modification of late-time cosmic dynamics by exotic matter

In this paper we show, through the study of concrete examples, that, depending on the cosmic dynamics of the energy density of matter degrees of freedom living in the brane, Randall-Sundrum (RS) brane effects can be important not only at short distances (UV regime), but also at large cosmological scales (IR regime). Our first example relies on the study, by means of the dynamical systems tools, of a toy model based in a non-linear electrodynamics (NLED) Lagrangian. Then we show that other, less elaborated models, such as the inclusion of a scalar phantom field, and of a tachyon phantom field -- trapped in the brane -- produce similar results. The form of the RS correction seems to convert what would have been future attractors in general relativity into saddle points. The above "mixing of scales" effect is distinctive only of theories that modify the right-hand-side (matter part) of the Friedmann equation, so that, for instance, DGP-brane models do not show this feature.

Dirac-Born-Infeld Field Trapped in the Braneworld

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the (linear) cosmic dynamics of a Dirac-Born-Infeld-type field trapped in the braneworld. We focus, exclusively, in Randall-Sundrum and in Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane models. We analyze the existence and stability of asymptotic solutions for the AdS throat and the quadratic potential and a particular choice of the warp factor and of the potential for the DBI field ($f(ϕ)=1/V(ϕ)$). It is demonstrated, in particular, that in the ultra-relativistic approximation matter-scaling and scalar field-dominated solutions always arise. In the first scenario the empty universe is the past attractor, while in the second model the past attractor is the matter-dominated phase.

Study Of Tachyon Dynamics For Broad Classes of Potentials

We investigate in detail the asymptotic properties of tachyon cosmology for a broad class of self-interaction potentials. The present approach relies in an appropriate re-definition of the tachyon field, which, in conjunction with a method formerly applied in the bibliography in a different context, allows to generalize the dynamical systems study of tachyon cosmology to a wider class of self-interaction potentials beyond the (inverse) square-law one. It is revealed that independent of the functional form of the potential, the matter-dominated solution and the ultra-relativistic (also matter-dominated) solution, are always associated with equilibrium points in the phase space of the tachyon models. The latter is always the past attractor, while the former is a saddle critical point. For inverse power-law potentials $V\proptoϕ^{-2λ}$ the late-time attractor is always the de Sitter solution, while for sinh-like potentials $V\propto\sinh^{-α}(λϕ)$, depending on the region of parameter space, the late-time attractor can be either the inflationary tachyon-dominated solution or the matter-scaling (also inflationary) phase. In general, for most part of known quintessential potentials, the late-time dynamics will be associated either with de Sitter inflation, or with matter-scaling, or with scalar field-dominated solutions.

Power-Law NLED-Based Magnetic Universe Can Mimic Phantom Behavior

We study the cosmic dynamics of a magnetic universe supported by non-linear electrodynamics (NLED) Lagrangeans that are proportional to powers of the electromagnetic invariant $\propto F^{1/(1-m)}$ ($m$ is an overall constant). For simplicity we focus in the case when $F$ depends on the magnetic field alone, a case dubbed in the bibliography as ''magnetic universe''. Our results demonstrate that, depending on the values of the free parameter $m$, the magnetic field can mimic phantom field behavior, an effect previously found in other contexts. It is demonstrated that, since there are found equilibrium points in the phase space of these models that can be associated with magnetic-dominated past and future attractors, a combination of positive and negative powers of $F$ may lead to interesting cosmological behavior. In particular, a cosmological scenario where the universe might evolve from a past NLED-driven (non-inflationary) state into a future (late-time) -- also NLED-driven -- inflationary stage, transiting through a matter-dominated solution, is envisioned. The impact of braneworld gravity on the dynamics driven by such NLED Lagrangeans is also investigated. It is demonstrated that, due to phantom property at late times, the non-linear electromagnetic effects may play an important role in deciding the fate of the cosmic evolution. Randall-Sundrum brane effects, in particular, modify the nature of the starting point of the cosmic evolution, as well as the fate of the expansion: both, the big bang singularity and the big rip event -- inherent in general relativity with phantom matter source --, may be avoided.

Asymptotic Properties of a Supposedly Regular (Dirac-Born-Infeld) Modification of General Relativity

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the asymptotic properties of a cosmological model based on a non-linear modification of General Relativity in which the standard Einstein-Hilbert action is replaced by one of Dirac-Born-Infeld type. It is shown that the dynamics of this model is extremely rich: there are found equilibrium points in the phase space that can be associated with matter-dominated, matter-curvature scaling, de Sitter, and even phantom-like solutions. Depending on the value of the overall parameters the dynamics in phase space can show multi-attractor structure into the future (multiple future attractors may co-exist). This is a consequence of bifurcations in control parameter space, showing strong dependence of the model's dynamical properties on the free parameters. Contrary to what is expected from non-linear modifications of general relativity of this kind, removal of the initial spacetime singularity is not a generic feature of the corresponding cosmological model. Instead, the starting point of the cosmic dynamics -- the past attractor in the phase space -- is a state of infinitely large value of the Hubble rate squared, usually associated with the big bang singularity.

Dynamics of FRW Universes Sourced by Non-Linear Electrodynamics

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the (linear) dynamics of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes that are fuelled by non-linear electrodynamics. We focus, mainly, in two particular models. In the first model the cosmic evolution is fuelled by cold dark matter, a cosmological constant and a non-linear electrodynamics field. In the second case non-singular cosmology and late-time accelerated expansion are unified in a model where the Einstein's field equations are sourced only by cold dark matter and a non-linear electrodynamics field. It is shown that, in contrast to previous claims, the cosmological effects coming from the non-linear electrodynamics field are not as generic as though. In fact, critical points in the phase space that could be associated with non-linear electrodynamic effects are not found.

Self accelerating solutions in a DGP brane with a scalar field trapped on it: the dynamical systems perspective

We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the linear dynamics of a self-interacting scalar field trapped on a DGP brane. The simplest kinds of self-interaction potentials are investigated: a) constant potential, and b) exponential potential. It is shown that the dynamics of DGP models can be very rich and complex. One of the most interesting results of this study shows that dynamical screening of the scalar field self-interaction potential, occuring within the Minkowski cosmological phase of the DGP model and mimetizing 4D phantom behaviour, is an attractor solution for a constant self-interaction potential but not for the exponential one. In the latter case gravitational screening is not even a critical point of the corresponding autonomous system of ordinary differential equations.

Critical comments on the paper "Crossing $ω=-1$ by a single scalar field on a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane" by H Zhang and Z-H Zhu [Phys.Rev.D75,023510(2007)]

It is demonstrated that the claim in the paper "Crossing $ω=-1$ by a single scalar field on a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati brane" by H Zhang and Z-H Zhu [Phys.Rev.D75,023510(2007)], about a prove that there do not exist scaling solutions in a universe with dust in a Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld scenario, is incorrect.
