Regularity theorems for random elliptic operators on domains

Regularity theorems à la Avellaneda-Lin are an indispensable part of the modern quantitative theory of stochastic homogenization. While interior regularity results for random elliptic operators have been available for a while, on general smooth domains the existing theory has until recently remained limited to Lipschitz estimates. We establish $C^{1,α}$ regularity results for random elliptic operators on bounded sufficiently smooth domains, as well as for scalar problems on convex polytopes. We, furthermore, prove a number of auxiliary results typically employed in the derivation of fluctuation bounds, such as a weighted Meyers estimate.

Boundary Layer Estimates in Stochastic Homogenization

We prove quantitative decay estimates for the boundary layer corrector in stochastic homogenization in the case of a half-space boundary. Our estimates are of optimal order and show that the gradient of the boundary layer corrector features nearly fluctuation-order decay; its expected value decays even one order faster. As a corollary, we deduce estimates on the accuracy of the representative volume element (RVE) method for the computation of effective coefficients: in $d\geq 3$ dimensions our understanding of the decay of boundary layers enables us to justify an improved formula for the RVE method, based on a combination of oversampling with the Hill-Mandel condition.

The Initial Value Problem for Singular SPDEs via Rough Paths

In this contribution we develop a solution theory for singular quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations subject to an initial condition. We obtain our solution theory as a perturbation of the rough path approach developed to handle the space-time periodic problem by Otto and Weber (2019). As in their work, we assume that the forcing is of class $C^{α-2}$ for $α\in (\frac{2}{3},1)$ and space-time periodic and, additionally, that the initial condition is of class $C^α$ and periodic. We contribute to the analytic aspects of the theory. Indeed, we show that we can enforce the initial condition via correcting the previously obtained space-time periodic solution with an initial boundary layer which may be handled in a completely deterministic manner. Uniqueness is obtained in the class of solutions which are corrected in this way by an initial boundary layer. Moreover, stability of the solutions with respect to perturbations of the data is established.

Density fluctuations in weakly interacting particle systems via the Dean-Kawasaki equation

The Dean-Kawasaki equation - one of the most fundamental SPDEs of fluctuating hydrodynamics - has been proposed as a model for density fluctuations in weakly interacting particle systems. In its original form it is highly singular and fails to be renormalizable even by approaches such as regularity structures and paracontrolled distributions, hindering mathematical approaches to its rigorous justification. It has been understood recently that it is natural to introduce a suitable regularization, e.g., by applying a formal spatial discretization or by truncating high-frequency noise. In the present work, we prove that a regularization in form of a formal discretization of the Dean-Kawasaki equation indeed accurately describes density fluctuations in systems of weakly interacting diffusing particles: We show that in suitable weak metrics, the law of fluctuations as predicted by the discretized Dean-Kawasaki SPDE approximates the law of fluctuations of the original particle system, up to an error that is of arbitrarily high order in the inverse particle number and a discretization error. In particular, the Dean-Kawasaki equation provides a means for efficient and accurate simulations of density fluctuations in weakly interacting particle systems.

Partial Hölder Regularity for Solutions of a Class of Cross-Diffusion Systems with Entropy Structure

In this article we show a $C^{0,α}$-partial regularity result for solutions of a certain class of cross-diffusion systems with entropy structure. Under slightly more stringent conditions on the system, we are able to obtain a $C^{1,α}$-partial regularity result. Amongst others, our results yield the partial $C^{1,α}$-regularity of weak solutions of the Maxwell-Stefan system, as well as the partial $C^{1,α}$-regularity of bounded weak solutions of the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model. The classical partial regularity theory for nonlinear parabolic systems as developed by Giaquinta and Struwe in the 80s proceeds by Campanato iteration which relies on energy methods. Our analysis here centers around the insight that, in the Campanato iteration strategy, we can replace the use of energy estimates by "entropy dissipation inequalities" and the use of the squared $L^2$-distance to measure the distance between functions by the use of the "relative entropy". In order for our strategy to work, it is necessary to regularize the entropy structure of the cross-diffusion system, thereby introducing a new technical tool, which we call the "glued entropy".

Stochastic homogenization and geometric singularities : a study on corners

In this contribution we are interested in the quantitative homogenization properties of linear elliptic equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data in polygonal domains with corners. To begin our study of this situation, we consider the setting of an angular sector in 2 dimensions : Unlike in the whole-space, on such a sector there exist non-smooth harmonic functions (these depend on the angle of the sector). Here, we construct extended homogenization correctors corresponding to these harmonic functions and prove growth estimates for these which are quasi-optimal, namely optimal up to a logarithmic loss. Our construction of the corner correctors relies on a large-scale regularity theory for a-harmonic functions in the sector, which we also prove and which, as a by-product, yields a Liouville principle. We also propose a nonstandard 2-scale expansion, which is adapted to the sectoral domain and incorporates the corner correctors. Our final result is a quasi-optimal error estimate for this adapted 2-scale expansion.

Partial Hölder Regularity for Bounded Solutions of a Class of Cross-Diffusion Systems with Entropy Structure

In this contribution we obtain partial $C^{0,α}$-regularity for bounded solutions of a certain class of cross-diffusion systems, which are strongly coupled, degenerate quasilinear parabolic systems. Under slightly more restrictive assumptions, we obtain partial $C^{1,α}$-regularity. The cross-diffusion systems that we consider have a formal gradient flow structure, in the sense that they are formally identical to the gradient flow of a convex entropy functional. Furthermore, we assume that the cross-diffusion systems are not volume-filling. The main novel tool that we introduce in this contribution is a "glued entropy density," which allows us to emulate the classical theory of partial Hölder regularity for nonlinear parabolic systems by Giaquinta and Struwe within this new setting. To demonstrate the applicability of our results, we give two examples of well-studied cross-diffusion systems that satisfy our assumptions --one of which is the two component Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model for population dynamics.

Derivation of a Fractional Cross-Diffusion System as the Limit of a Stochastic Many-Particle System Driven by Lévy Noise

In this article a fractional cross-diffusion system is derived as the rigorous many-particle limit of a multi-species system of moderately interacting particles that is driven by Lévy noise. The form of the mutual interaction is motivated by the porous medium equation with fractional potential pressure. Our approach is based on the techniques developed by Oelschläger (1989) and Stevens (2000), in the latter of which the convergence of a regularization of the empirical measure to the solution of a correspondingly regularized macroscopic system is shown. A well-posedness result and the non-negativity of solutions are proved for the regularized macroscopic system, which then yields the same results for the non-regularized fractional cross-diffusion system in the limit.

Quantitative homogenization for the case of an interface between two heterogeneous media

In this article we are interested in quantitative homogenization results for linear elliptic equations in the non-stationary situation of a straight interface between two heterogenous media. This extends the previous work [Josien, 2019] to a substantially more general setting, in which the surrounding heterogeneous media may be periodic or random stationary and ergodic. Our main result is a quantification of the sublinearity of a homogenization corrector adapted to the interface, which we construct using an improved version of the method developed in [Fischer and Raithel, 2017]. This quantification is optimal up to a logarithmic loss and allows to derive almost-optimal convergence rates.

A Large-Scale Regularity Theory for Random Elliptic Operators on the Half-Space with Homogeneous Neumann Boundary Data

In this note we derive large-scale regularity properties of solutions to second-order linear elliptic equations with random coefficients on the half- space with homogeneous Neumann boundary data; it is a companion to arXiv:1604.02717 in which the situation for homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data was addressed. Similarly to arXiv:1604.02717, the results in this contribution are expressed in terms of a first-order Liouville principle. It follows from an excess-decay that is shown through means of a stochastic homogenization-inspired Campanato iteration. The core of this contribution is the construction of a sublinear half-space- adapted corrector/vector potential pair that, in contrast to arXiv:1604.02717, is adapted to the Neumann boundary data.

Liouville principles and a large-scale regularity theory for random elliptic operators on the half-space

We consider the large-scale regularity of solutions to second-order linear elliptic equations with random coefficient fields. In contrast to previous works on regularity theory for random elliptic operators, our interest is in the regularity at the boundary: We consider problems posed on the half-space with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions and derive an associated $C^{1,α}$-type large-scale regularity theory in the form of a corresponding decay estimate for the homogenization-adapted tilt-excess. This regularity theory entails an associated Liouville-type theorem. The results are based on the existence of homogenization correctors adapted to the half-space setting, which we construct - by an entirely deterministic argument - as a modification of the homogenization corrector on the whole space. This adaption procedure is carried out inductively on larger scales, crucially relying on the regularity theory already established on smaller scales.
