On the generalised transfer operators of the Farey map with complex temperature

We consider the problem of showing that 1 is an eigenvalue for a family of generalised transfer operators of the Farey map. This problem is related to the spectral theory of the modular surface via the Selberg Zeta function and the theory of dynamical zeta functions of maps. After briefly recalling these connections, we show that the problem can be formulated for operators on an appropriate Hilbert space and translated into a linear algebra problem for infinite matrices.

The QCD topological susceptibility at high temperatures via staggered fermions spectral projectors

The QCD topological observables are essential inputs to obtain theoretical predictions about axion phenomenology, which are of utmost importance for current and future experimental searches for this particle. Among them, we focus on the topological susceptibility, related to the axion mass. We present lattice results for the topological susceptibility in QCD at high temperatures obtained by discretizing this observable via spectral projectors on eigenmodes of the staggered Dirac operator, and we compare them with those obtained with the standard gluonic definition. The adoption of the spectral discretization is motivated by the large lattice artifacts affecting the standard gluonic susceptibility, related to the choice of non-chiral fermions in the lattice action.

Topological susceptibility of $N_f=2+1$ QCD from staggered fermions spectral projectors at high temperatures

We compute the topological susceptibility of $N_f=2+1$ QCD with physical quark masses in the high-temperature phase, using numerical simulations of the theory discretized on a space-time lattice. More precisely we estimate the topological susceptibility for five temperatures in the range from $\sim200$ MeV up to $\sim600$ MeV, adopting the spectral projectors definition of the topological charge based on the staggered Dirac operator. This strategy turns out to be effective in reducing the large lattice artifacts which affect the standard gluonic definition, making it possible to perform a reliable continuum extrapolation. Our results for the susceptibility in the explored temperature range are found to be partially in tension with previous determinations in the literature.

Towards glueball masses of large-$N~\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Yang-Mills theories without topological freezing via parallel tempering on boundary conditions

Standard local updating algorithms experience a critical slowing down close to the continuum limit, which is particularly severe for topological observables. In practice, the Markov chain tends to remain trapped in a fixed topological sector. This problem further worsens at large $N$, and is known as $\mathit{topological}~\mathit{freezing}$. To mitigate it, we adopt the parallel tempering on boundary conditions proposed by M. Hasenbusch. This algorithm allows to obtain a reduction of the auto-correlation time of the topological charge up to several orders of magnitude. With this strategy we are able to provide the first computation of low-lying glueball masses at large $N$ free of any systematics related to topological freezing.

Maximal escape rate for shifts

We consider the shift transformation on the space of infinite sequences over a finite alphabet endowed with the invariant product measure, and examine the presence of a \emph{hole} on the space. The holes we study are specified by the sequences that do not contain a given finite word as initial sub-string. The measure of the set of sequences that do not fall into the hole in the first $n$ iterates of the shift is known to decay exponentially with $n$, and its exponential rate is called \emph{escape rate}. In this paper we provide a complete characterization of the holes with maximal escape rate. In particular we show that, contrary to the case of equiprobable symbols, ordering the holes by their escape rate corresponds to neither the order by their measure nor by the length of the shortest periodic orbit they contain. Finally, we adapt our technique to the case of shifts endowed with Markov measures, where preliminary results show that a more intricate situation is to be expected.

A Poincaré map for the horocycle flow on $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathbb{H}$ and the Stern-Brocot tree

We construct a Poincaré map $\mathcal{P}_h$ for the positive horocycle flow on the modular surface $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathbb{H}$, and begin a systematic study of its dynamical properties. In particular we give a complete characterisation of the periodic orbits of $\mathcal{P}_h$, and show that they are equidistributed with respect to the invariant measure of $\mathcal{P}_h$ and that they can be organised in a tree by using the Stern-Brocot tree of rational numbers. In addition we introduce a time-reparameterisation of $\mathcal{P}_h$ which gives an insight into the dynamics of the non-periodic orbits. This paper constitutes a first step in the study of the dynamical properties of the horocycle flow by purely dynamical methods.

Towards glueball masses of large-$N$ $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ pure-gauge theories without topological freezing

In commonly used Monte Carlo algorithms for lattice gauge theories the integrated autocorrelation time of the topological charge is known to be exponentially-growing as the continuum limit is approached. This $\mathit{topological}\,\,\textit{freezing}$, whose severity increases with the size of the gauge group, can result in potentially large systematics. To provide a direct quantification of the latter, we focus on $\mathrm{SU}(6)$ Yang--Mills theory at a lattice spacing for which conventional methods associated to the decorrelation of the topological charge have an unbearable computational cost. We adopt the recently proposed $\mathit{parallel}\,\,\mathit{tempering}\,\,\mathit{on}\,\,\mathit{boundary}\,\,\mathit{conditions}$ algorithm, which has been shown to remove systematic effects related to topological freezing, and compute glueball masses with a typical accuracy of $2-5\%$. We observe no sizeable systematic effect in the mass of the first lowest-lying glueball states, with respect to calculations performed at nearly-frozen topological sector.

Topology in high-$T$ QCD via staggered spectral projectors

We present preliminary lattice results for the topological susceptibility in high-$T$ $N_f=2+1$ QCD obtained discretizing this observable via spectral projectors on eigenmodes of the staggered operator, and we compare them with those obtained with the standard gluonic definition. The adoption of the spectral discretization is motivated by the large lattice artifacts affecting the continuum scaling of the gluonic susceptibility at high $T$, related to the choice of non-chiral fermions in the action.

Almost sure asymptotic behaviour of Birkhoff sums for infinite measure-preserving dynamical systems

We consider a conservative ergodic measure-preserving transformation $T$ of a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ with $μ(X)=\infty$. Given an observable $f:X\to \mathbb{R}$ we study the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of the Birkhoff sums $S_Nf(x) := \sum_{j=1}^N\, (f\circ T^{j-1})(x)$. In infinite ergodic theory it is well known that the asymptotic behaviour of $S_Nf(x)$ strongly depends on the point $x\in X$, and if $f\in L^1(X,μ)$, then there exists no real valued sequence $(b(N))$ such that $\lim_{N\to\infty} S_Nf(x)/b(N)=1$ almost surely. In this paper we show that for dynamical systems with strong mixing assumptions for the induced map on a finite measure set, there exists a sequence $(α(N))$ and $m\colon X\times \mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$ such that for $f\in L^1(X,μ)$ we have $\lim_{N\to\infty} S_{N+m(x,N)}f(x)/α(N)=1$ for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$. Moreover if $f\not\in L^1(X,μ)$ we give conditions on the induced observable such that there exists a sequence $(G(N))$ depending on $f$, for which $\lim_{N\to\infty} S_{N}f(x)/G(N)=1$ holds for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$.

Asymptotic behaviour of orbit determination for hyperbolic maps

We deal with the orbit determination problem for hyperbolic maps. The problem consists in determining the initial conditions of an orbit and, eventually, other parameters of the model from some observations. We study the behaviour of the confidence region in the case of simultaneous increase of the number of observations and the time span over which they are performed. More precisely, we describe the geometry of the confidence region for the solution, distinguishing whether a parameter is added to the estimate of the initial conditions or not. We prove that the inclusion of a dynamical parameter causes a change in the rate of decay of the uncertainties, as suggested by some known numerical evidences.

Large-$N$ $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theories with milder topological freezing

We simulate $4d$ $SU(N)$ pure-gauge theories at large $N$ using a parallel tempering scheme that combines simulations with open and periodic boundary conditions, implementing the algorithm originally proposed by Martin Hasenbusch for $2d$ $CP^{N-1}$ models. That allows to dramatically suppress the topological freezing suffered from standard local algorithms, reducing the autocorrelation time of $Q^2$ up to two orders of magnitude. Using this algorithm in combination with simulations at non-zero imaginary $θ$ we are able to refine state-of-the-art results for the large-$N$ behavior of the quartic coefficient of the $θ$-dependence of the vacuum energy $b_2$, reaching an accuracy comparable with that of the large-$N$ limit of the topological susceptibility.

$θ$-dependence in the small-$N$ limit of $2d$ $CP^{N-1}$ models

We present a systematic numerical study of $θ$-dependence around $θ=0$ in the small-$N$ limit of $2d$ $CP^{N-1}$ models, aimed at clarifying the possible presence of a divergent topological susceptibility in the continuum limit. We follow a twofold strategy, based on one side on direct simulations for $N = 2$ and $N = 3$ on lattices with correlation lengths up to $O(10^2)$, and on the other side on the small-$N$ extrapolation of results obtained for $N$ up to $9$. Based on that, we provide conclusive evidence for a finite topological susceptibility at $N = 3$, with a continuum estimate $ξ^2 χ= 0.110(5)$. On the other hand, results obtained for $N = 2$ are still inconclusive: they are consistent with a logarithmically divergent continuum extrapolation, but do not yet exclude a finite continuum value, $ξ^2 χ\sim 0.4$, with the divergence taking place for $N$ slightly below 2 in this case. Finally, results obtained for the non-quadratic part of $θ$-dependence, in particular for the so-called $b_2$ coefficient, are consistent with a $θ$-dependence matching that of the Dilute Instanton Gas Approximation at the point where $ξ^2 χ$ diverges.

Chaotic motion in the breathing circle billiard

We consider the free motion of a point particle inside a circular billiard with periodically moving boundary, with the assumption that the collisions of the particle with the boundary are elastic so that the energy of the particle is not preserved. It is known that if the motion of the boundary is regular enough then the energy is bounded due to the existence of invariant curves. We show that it is nevertheless possible that the motion of the particle is chaotic, also under regularity assumptions for the moving boundary. More precisely, we show that there exists a class of functions describing the motion of the boundary for which the billiard map admits invariant probability measures with positive metric entropy. The proof relies on variational techniques based on Aubry-Mather theory.

Pomeau-Manneville maps are global-local mixing

We prove that a large class of expanding maps of the unit interval with a $C^2$-regular indifferent point in 0 and full increasing branches are global-local mixing. This class includes the standard Pomeau-Manneville maps $T(x) = x + x^{p+1}$ mod 1 ($p \ge 1$), the Liverani-Saussol-Vaienti maps (with index $p \ge 1$) and many generalizations thereof.

Representation and coding of rational pairs on a Triangular tree and Diophantine approximation in $\mathbb{R}^2$

In this paper we study the properties of the \emph{Triangular tree}, a complete tree of rational pairs introduced in \cite{cas}, in analogy with the main properties of the Farey tree (or Stern-Brocot tree). To our knowledge the Triangular tree is the first generalisation of the Farey tree constructed using the mediant operation. In particular we introduce a two-dimensional representation for the pairs in the tree, a coding which describes how to reach a pair by motions on the tree, and its description in terms of $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ matrices. The tree and the properties we study are then used to introduce rational approximations of non-rational pairs.

A slow triangle map with a segment of indifferent fixed points and a complete tree of rational pairs

We study the two-dimensional continued fraction algorithm introduced in \cite{garr} and the associated \emph{triangle map} $T$, defined on a triangle $\triangle\subset \R^2$. We introduce a slow version of the triangle map, the map $S$, which is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure and preserves an infinite Lebesgue-absolutely continuous invariant measure. We discuss the properties that the two maps $T$ and $S$ share with the classical Gauss and Farey maps on the interval, including an analogue of the weak law of large numbers and of Khinchin's weak law for the digits of the triangle sequence, the expansion associated to $T$. Finally, we confirm the role of the map $S$ as a two-dimensional version of the Farey map by introducing a complete tree of rational pairs, constructed using the inverse branches of $S$, in the same way as the Farey tree is generated by the Farey map, and then, equivalently, generated by a generalised mediant operation.

Spectral Projectors Method for Staggered Fermions

We extend the spectral projectors method to staggered fermions. Applying the index theorem to the staggered Dirac operator it is possible to work out an expression for the topological susceptibility which depends only on the orthogonal projectors on quasi zero-modes, as it has already been done for Dirac-Wilson fermions. Besides, we generalize this method deriving analogous expressions for all higher-order coefficients in the $θ$-expansion of the vacuum energy.

Large-$N$ expansion and $θ$-dependence of $2d$ $CP^{N-1}$ models beyond the leading order

We investigate the $θ$-dependence of 2-dimensional $CP^{N-1}$ models in the large-$N$ limit by lattice simulations. Thanks to a recent algorithm proposed by M. Hasenbusch to improve the critical slowing down of topological modes, combined with simulations at imaginary values of $θ$, we manage to determine the vacuum energy density up the sixth order in $θ$ and up to $N = 51$. Our results support analytic predictions, which are known up to the next-to-leading term in $1/N$ for the quadratic term in $θ$ (topological susceptibility), and up to the leading term for the quartic coefficient $b_2$. Moreover, we give a numerical estimate of further terms in the $1/N$ expansion for both quantities, pointing out that the $1/N$ convergence for the $θ$-dependence of this class of models is particularly slow.
