Orderings of the rationals and dynamical systems

This paper is devoted to a systematic study of a class of binary trees encoding the structure of rational numbers both from arithmetic and dynamical point of view. The paper is divided into two parts. The first one is a critical review of rather standard topics such as Stern-Brocot and Farey trees and their connections with continued fraction expansion and the question mark function. In the second part we introduce a class of one-dimensional maps which can be used to generate the binary trees in different ways and study their ergodic properties. This also leads us to study some random processes (Markov chains and martingales) arising in a natural way in this context.

Spectral analysis of transfer operators associated to Farey fractions

The spectrum of a one-parameter family of signed transfer operators associated to the Farey map is studied in detail. We show that when acting on a suitable Hilbert space of analytic functions they are self-adjoint and exhibit absolutely continuous spectrum and no non-zero point spectrum. Polynomial eigenfunctions when the parameter is a negative half-integer are also discussed.

A renormalization approach to irrational rotations

We introduce a renormalization procedure which allows us to study in a unified and concise way different properties of the irrational rotations on the unit circle $β\mapsto \set{α+β}$, $α\in \R\setminus \Q$. In particular we obtain sharp results for the diffusion of the walk on $\Z$ generated by the location of points of the sequence $\{nα+β\}$ on a binary partition of the unit interval. Finally we give some applications of our method.

Complexity for extended dynamical systems

We consider dynamical systems for which the spatial extension plays an important role. For these systems, the notions of attractor, epsilon-entropy and topological entropy per unit time and volume have been introduced previously. In this paper we use the notion of Kolmogorov complexity to introduce, for extended dynamical systems, a notion of complexity per unit time and volume which plays the same role as the metric entropy for classical dynamical systems. We introduce this notion as an almost sure limit on orbits of the system. Moreover we prove a kind of variational principle for this complexity.

Algorithmic information for intermittent systems with an indifferent fixed point

Measuring the average information that is necessary to describe the behaviour of a dynamical system leads to a generalization of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. This is particularly interesting when the system has null entropy and the information increases less than linearly with respect to time. We consider two classes of maps of the interval with an indifferent fixed point at the origin and an infinite natural invariant measure. We calculate that the average information that is necessary to describe the behaviour of its orbits increases with time $n$ approximately as $n^α$, where $α<1$ depends only on the asymptotic behaviour of the map near the origin.

The Algorithmic Information Content for randomly perturbed systems

In this paper we prove estimates on the behaviour of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy relative to a partition for randomly perturbed dynamical systems. Our estimates use the entropy for the unperturbed system and are obtained using the notion of Algorithmic Information Content. The main result is an extension of known results to study time series obtained by the observation of real systems.

Toward a dynamical model for prime numbers

We show one possible dynamical approach to the study of the distribution of prime numbers. Our approach is based on two complexity methods, the Computable Information Content and the Entropy Information Gain, looking for analogies between the prime numbers and intermittency.

The Manneville map: topological, metric and algorithmic entropy

We study the Manneville map f(x)=x+x^z (mod 1), with z>1, from a computational point of view, studying the behaviour of the Algorithmic Information Content. In particular, we consider a family of piecewise linear maps that gives examples of algorithmic behaviour ranging from the fully to the mildly chaotic, and show that the Manneville map is a member of this family.

Computational information for the logistic map at the chaos threshold

We study the logistic map $f(x)=λx(1-x)$ on the unit square at the chaos threshold. By using the methods of symbolic dynamics, the information content of an orbit of a dynamical system is defined as the Algorithmic Information Content (AIC) of a symbolic sequence. We give results for the behaviour of the AIC for the logistic map. Since the AIC is not a computable function we use, as approximation of the AIC, a notion of information content given by the length of the string after it has been compressed by a compression algorithm, and in particular we introduce a new compression algorithm called CASToRe. The information content is then used to characterise the chaotic behaviour.

Information, complexity and entropy: a new approach to theory and measurement methods

In this paper, we present some results on information, complexity and entropy as defined below and we discuss their relations with the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy which is the most important invariant of a dynamical system. These results have the following features and motivations: -we give a new computable definition of information and complexity which allows to give a computable characterization of the K-S entropy; -these definitions make sense even for a single orbit and can be measured by suitable data compression algorithms; hence they can be used in simulations and in the analysis of experimental data; -the asymptotic behavior of these quantities allows to compute not only the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy but also other quantities which give a measure of the chaotic behavior of a dynamical system even in the case of null entropy.
