Relative partition function of Coulomb plus delta interaction

The relative partition function and the relative zeta function of the perturbation of the Laplace operator by a Coulomb potential plus a point interaction centered in the origin is discussed. Applications to the study of the Casimir effect are indicated.

Time dependent delta-prime interactions in dimension one

We solve the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger equation corresponding to the family of Hamiltonians $H_{γ(t)}$ in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ which describes a $δ'$-interaction with time-dependent strength $1/γ(t)$. We prove that the strong solution of such a Cauchy problem exits whenever the map $t\mapstoγ(t)$ belongs to the fractional Sobolev space $H^{3/4}(\mathbb{R})$, thus weakening the hypotheses which would be required by the known general abstract results. The solution is expressed in terms of the free evolution and the solution of a Volterra integral equation.

Ground state and orbital stability for the NLS equation on a general starlike graph with potentials

We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) posed on a graph or network composed of a generic compact part to which a finite number of half-lines are attached. We call this structure a starlike graph. At the vertices of the graph interactions of $δ$-type can be present and an overall external potential is admitted. Under general assumptions on the potential, we prove that the NLS is globally well-posed in the energy domain. We are interested in minimizing the energy of the system on the manifold of constant mass ($L^2$-norm). When existing, the minimizer is called ground state and it is the profile of an orbitally stable standing wave for the NLS evolution. We prove that a ground state exists for sufficiently small masses whenever the quadratic part of the energy admits a simple isolated eigenvalue at the bottom of the spectrum (the linear ground state). This is a wide generalization of a result previously obtained for a star graph with a single vertex. The main part of the proof is devoted to prove the concentration compactness principle for starlike structures; this is non trivial due to the lack of translation invariance of the domain. Then we show that a minimizing bounded $H^1$ sequence for the constrained NLS energy with external linear potentials is in fact convergent if its mass is small enough. Examples are provided with discussion of hypotheses on the linear part.

The 1-D Dirac equation with concentrated nonlinearity

We define and study the Cauchy problem for a 1-D nonlinear Dirac equation with nonlinearities concentrated at one point. Global well-posedness is provided and conservation laws for mass and energy are shown. Several examples, including nonlinear Gesztesy-Šeba models and the concentrated versions of the Bragg Resonance, Gross-Neveu, and Soler type models, all within the scope of the present paper, are given. The key point of the proof consists in the reduction of the original equation to a nonlinear integral equation for an auxiliary, space-independent variable (the "charge").

Stable standing waves for a NLS on star graphs as local minimizers of the constrained energy

On a star graph made of $N \geq 3$ halflines (edges) we consider a Schrödinger equation with a subcritical power-type nonlinearity and an attractive delta interaction located at the vertex. From previous works it is known that there exists a family of standing waves, symmetric with respect to the exchange of edges, that can be parametrized by the mass (or $L^2$-norm) of its elements. Furthermore, if the mass is small enough, then the corresponding symmetric standing wave is a ground state and, consequently, it is orbitally stable. On the other hand, if the mass is above a threshold value, then the system has no ground state. Here we prove that orbital stability holds for every value of the mass, even if the corresponding symmetric standing wave is not a ground state, since it is anyway a {\em local} minimizer of the energy among functions with the same mass. The proof is based on a new technique that allows to restrict the analysis to functions made of pieces of soliton, reducing the problem to a finite-dimensional one. In such a way, we do not need to use direct methods of Calculus of Variations, nor linearization procedures.

Bounds for the Stieltjes Transform and the Density of States of Wigner Matrices

We consider ensembles of Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. We show the convergence of the Stieltjes transform towards the Stieltjes transform of the semicircle law on optimal scales and with the optimal rate. Our bounds improve previous results, in particular from [22,10], by removing the logarithmic corrections. As applications, we establish the convergence of the eigenvalue counting functions with the rate $(\log N)/N$ and the rigidity of the eigenvalues of Wigner matrices on the same scale. These bounds improve the results of [22,10,23].

Effective equation for a system of mechanical oscillators in an acoustic field

We consider a one dimensional evolution problem modeling the dynamics of an acoustic field coupled with a set of mechanical oscillators. We analyze solutions of the system of ordinary and partial differential equations with time-dependent boundary conditions describing the evolution in the limit of a continuous distribution of oscillators.

Stationary States of NLS on Star Graphs

We consider a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a power nonlinearity |ψ|^2μψ, of focusing type, describing propagation on the ramified structure given by N edges connected at a vertex (a star graph). To model the interaction at the junction, it is there imposed a boundary condition analogous to the δpotential of strength αon the line, including as a special case (α=0) the free propagation. We show that nonlinear stationary states describing solitons sitting at the vertex exist both for attractive (α<0, representing a potential well) and repulsive (α>0, a potential barrier) interaction. In the case of sufficiently strong attractive interaction at the vertex and power nonlinearity μ<2, including the standard cubic case, we characterize the ground state as minimizer of a constrained action and we discuss its orbital stability. Finally we show that in the free case, for even N only, the stationary states can be used to construct traveling waves on the graph.

The Riemann zeta in terms of the dilogarithm

We give a representation of the classical Riemann $ζ$-function in the half plane $\Re s>0$ in terms of a Mellin transform involving the real part of the dilogarithm function with an argument on the unit circle (associated Clausen $Gl_2$-function). We also derive corresponding representations involving the derivatives of the $Gl_2$-function. A generalized symmetrized Müntz-type formula is also derived. For a special choice of test functions it connects to our integral representation of the $ζ$-function, providing also a computation of a concrete Mellin transform. Certain formulae involving series of zeta functions and gamma functions are also derived.

Local Marchenko-Pastur Law at the Hard Edge of Sample Covariance Matrices

Let $X_N$ be a $N\times N$ matrix whose entries are i.i.d. complex random variables with mean zero and variance $\frac{1}{N}$. We study the asymptotic spectral distribution of the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix $X_N^*X_N$ for $N\to\infty$. We prove that the empirical density of eigenvalues in an interval $[E,E+η]$ converges to the Marchenko-Pastur law locally on the optimal scale, $N η/\sqrt{E} \gg (\log N)^b$, and in any interval up to the hard edge, $\frac{(\log N)^b}{N^2}\lesssim E \leq 4-κ$, for any $κ>0$. As a consequence, we show the complete delocalization of the eigenvectors.

On the structure of critical energy levels for the cubic focusing NLS on star graphs

We provide information on a non trivial structure of phase space of the cubic NLS on a three-edge star graph. We prove that, contrarily to the case of the standard NLS on the line, the energy associated to the cubic focusing Schrödinger equation on the three-edge star graph with a free (Kirchhoff) vertex does not attain a minimum value on any sphere of constant $L^2$-norm. We moreover show that the only stationary state with prescribed L^2-norm is indeed a saddle point.

Fast solitons on star graphs

We define the Schrödinger equation with focusing, cubic nonlinearity on one-vertex graphs. We prove global well-posedness in the energy domain and conservation laws for some self-adjoint boundary conditions at the vertex, i.e. Kirchhoff boundary condition and the so called $δ$ and $δ'$ boundary conditions. Moreover, in the same setting we study the collision of a fast solitary wave with the vertex and we show that it splits in reflected and transmitted components. The outgoing waves preserve a soliton character over a time which depends on the logarithm of the velocity of the ingoing solitary wave. Over the same timescale the reflection and transmission coefficients of the outgoing waves coincide with the corresponding coefficients of the linear problem. In the analysis of the problem we follow ideas borrowed from the seminal paper \cite{[HMZ07]} about scattering of fast solitons by a delta interaction on the line, by Holmer, Marzuola and Zworski; the present paper represents an extension of their work to the case of graphs and, as a byproduct, it shows how to extend the analysis of soliton scattering by other point interactions on the line, interpreted as a degenerate graph.

Perturbations of eigenvalues embedded at threshold: one, two and three dimensional solvable models

We examine perturbations of eigenvalues and resonances for a class of multi-channel quantum mechanical model-Hamiltonians describing a particle interacting with a localized spin in dimension $d=1,2,3$. We consider unperturbed Hamiltonians showing eigenvalues and resonances at the threshold of the continuous spectrum and we analyze the effect of various type of perturbations on the spectral singularities. We provide algorithms to obtain convergent series expansions for the coordinates of the singularities.

Resonances in Models of Spin Dependent Point Interactions

In dimension $d=1,2,3$ we define a family of two-channel Hamiltonians obtained as point perturbations of the generator of the free decoupled dynamics. Within the family we choose two Hamiltonians, $\hat H_0$ and $\hat H_\ve$, giving rise respectively to the unperturbed and to the perturbed evolution. The Hamiltonian $\hat H_0$ does not couple the channels and has an eigenvalue embedded in the continuous spectrum. The Hamiltonian $\hat H_\ve$ is a small perturbation, in resolvent sense, of $\hat H_0$ and exhibits a small coupling between the channels. We take advantage of the complete solvability of our model to prove with simple arguments that the embedded eigenvalue of $\hat H_0$ shifts into a resonance for $\hat H_\ve$. In dimension three we analyze details of the time behavior of the projection onto the region of the spectrum close to the resonance.

Nontrivial edge coupling from a Dirichlet network squeezing: the case of a bent waveguide

In distinction to the Neumann case the squeezing limit of a Dirichlet network leads in the threshold region generically to a quantum graph with disconnected edges, exceptions may come from threshold resonances. Our main point in this paper is to show that modifying locally the geometry we can achieve in the limit a nontrivial coupling between the edges including, in particular, the class of $δ$-type boundary conditions. We work out an illustration of this claim in the simplest case when a bent waveguide is squeezed.

Coupling in the singular limit of thin quantum waveguides

We analyze the problem of approximating a smooth quantum waveguide with a quantum graph. We consider a planar curve with compactly supported curvature and a strip of constant width around the curve. We rescale the curvature and the width in such a way that the strip can be approximated by a singular limit curve, consisting of one vertex and two infinite, straight edges, i.e. a broken line. We discuss the convergence of the Laplacian, with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the strip, in a suitable sense and we obtain two possible limits: the Laplacian on the line with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the origin and a non trivial family of point perturbations of the Laplacian on the line. The first case generically occurs and corresponds to the decoupling of the two components of the limit curve, while in the second case a coupling takes place. We present also two families of curves which give rise to coupling.

Spin dependent point potentials in one and three dimensions

We consider a system realized with one spinless quantum particle and an array of $N$ spins 1/2 in dimension one and three. We characterize all the Hamiltonians obtained as point perturbations of an assigned free dynamics in terms of some ``generalized boundary conditions''. For every boundary condition we give the explicit formula for the resolvent of the corresponding Hamiltonian. We discuss the problem of locality and give two examples of spin dependent point potentials that could be of interest as multi-component solvable models.
