Role of the impurity-potential range in disordered d-wave superconductors

We analyze how the range of disorder affects the localization properties of quasiparticles in a two-dimensional d-wave superconductor within the standard non-linear sigma-model approach to disordered systems. We show that for purely long-range disorder, which only induces intra-node scattering processes, the approach is free from the ambiguities which often beset the disordered Dirac-fermion theories, and gives rise to a Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten action leading to vanishing density of states and finite conductivities. We also study the crossover induced by internode scattering due to a short range component of the disorder, thus providing a coherent non-linear sigma-model description in agreement with all the various findings of different approaches.

Relevance of phonon dynamics in strongly correlated systems coupled to phonons: A Dynamical Mean Field Theory analysis

The properties of the electron-phonon interaction in the presence of a sizable electronic repulsion at finite doping are studied by investigating the metallic phase of the Hubbard-Holstein model with Dynamical Mean Field Theory. Analyzing the quasiparticle weight at finite doping, we find that a large Coulomb repulsion reduces the effect of electron-phonon coupling at low-energy, while this reduction is not present at high energy. The renormalization of the electron-phonon coupling induced by the Hubbard repul sion depends in a surprisingly strong and non-trivial way on the phonon frequency. Our results suggest that phonon might affect differently high-energy and low-energy properties and this, together with the effect of phonon dynamics, should be carefully taken into account when the effects of the electron-phonon interaction in a strongly correlated system, like the superconducting cuprates, are discussed.

Quasiparticle conductivities in disordered d-wave superconductors

We study the quasiparticle transport coefficients in disordered d-wave superconductors. We find that spin and charge excitations are generally localized unless magnetic impurities are present. If the system is close to a nesting point in the impurity-scattering unitary limit, the tendency towards localization is reduced while the quasiparticle density of states gets enhanced by disorder. We also show that the residual repulsive interaction among quasiparticles has a delocalizing effect and increases the density of states.

Anderson localization in bipartite lattices

We study the localization properties of a disordered tight-binding Hamiltonian on a generic bipartite lattice close to the band center. By means of a fermionic replica trick method, we derive the effective non-linear $σ$-model describing the diffusive modes, which we analyse by using the Wilson--Polyakov renormalization group. In addition to the standard parameters which define the non-linear $σ$-model, namely the conductance and the external frequency, a new parameter enters, which may be related to the fluctuations of the staggered density of states. We find that, when both the regular hopping and the disorder only couple one sublattice to the other, the quantum corrections to the Kubo conductivity vanish at the band center, thus implying the existence of delocalized states. In two dimensions, the RG equations predict that the conductance flows to a finite value, while both the density of states and the staggered density of states fluctuations diverge. In three dimensions, we find that, for arbitrarily weak disorder, sufficiently close to the band center, all states are extended. We also discuss the role of various symmetry breaking terms, as a regular hopping between same sublattices, or an on-site disorder.

Renormalization group analysis of the quantum non-linear sigma model with a damping term

We investigate the behavior of the zero-temperature quantum non-linear sigma model in d dimensions in the presence of a damping term of the form f(w)~ |w|^alpha, with 1 \le alpha <2. We find two fixed points: a spin-wave fixed point FP1 showing a dynamic scaling exponent z=1 and a dissipative fixed point FP2 with z>1. In the framework of the ε-expansion it is seen that there is a range of values alpha_*(d) \le alpha \le 2 where the point FP1 is stable with respect to FP2, so that the system realizes a z=1 quantum critical behavior even in the presence of a dissipative term. However, reasonable arguments suggest that in d=2 this range is very narrow. In the broken symmetry phase we discuss a phenomenological scaling approach, treating damping as a perturbation of the ordered ground state. The relation of these results with the pseudogap effect observed in underdoped layered cuprates is discussed.

Specific Heat Anomaly and Adiabatic Hysteresis in Disordered Electron Systems in a Magnetic Field

We consider the thermodynamic behavior of a disordered interacting electron system in two dimensions. We show that the corrections to the thermodynamic potential in the weakly localized regime give rise to a non monotonic behavior of the specific heat both in temperature and magnetic field. From this effect we predict the appearance of adiabatic hysteresis in the magnetoconductance. Our results can be interpreted as precursor effect of formation of local moments in disordered electron systems. We also comment on the relevance of our analysis in three dimensional systems.
