Time reparametrization group and the long time behaviour in quantum glassy systems

We study the long time dynamics of a quantum version of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. Time reparametrizations of the dynamical equations have a parallel with renormalization group transformations, and within this language the long time behaviour of this model is controlled by a reparametrization group (R$_p$G) fixed point of the classical dynamics. The irrelevance of the quantum terms in the dynamical equations in the aging regime explains the classical nature of the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem.

Density of states for dirty d-wave superconductors: A unified and dual approach for different types of disorder

A two-parameter field theoretical representation is given of a 2-dimensional dirty d-wave superconductor that interpolates between the Gaussian limit of uncorrelated weak disorder and the unitary limit of a dilute concentration of resonant scatterers. It is argued that a duality holds between these two regimes from which follows that a linearly vanishing density of states in the Gaussian limit transforms into a diverging one in the unitary limit arbitrarily close to the Fermi energy.

Non-perturbative saddle point for the effective action of disordered and interacting electrons in 2D

We find a non-perturbative saddle-point solution for the non-linear sigma model proposed by Finkelstein for interacting and disordered electronic systems. Spin rotation symmetry, present in the original saddle point solution, is spontaneously broken at one-loop, as in the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. The new solution is singular in both the disorder and triplet interaction strengths, and it also explicitly demonstrates that a non-trivial ferromagnetic state appears in a theory where the disorder average is carried out from the outset.

Adsorption on carbon nanotubes: quantum spin tubes, magnetization plateaus, and conformal symmetry

We formulate the problem of adsorption onto the surface of a carbon nanotube as a lattice gas on a triangular lattice wrapped around a cylinder. This model is equivalent to an XXZ Heisenberg quantum spin tube. The geometric frustration due to wrapping leads generically to four magnetization plateaus, in contrast to the two on a flat graphite sheet. We obtain analytical and numerical results for the magnetizations and transition fields for armchair, zig-zag and chiral nanotubes. The zig-zags are exceptional in that one of the plateaus has extensive zero temperature entropy in the classical limit. Quantum effects lift up the degeneracy, leaving gapless excitations which are described by a $c=1$ conformal field theory with compactification radius quantized by the tube circumference.

Solitons in Carbon Nanotubes

The symmetries of spontaneous lattice distortions in carbon nanotubes are investigated. When the degeneracy of the ground states remains discrete, there are solitons or domain walls connecting the different symmetry broken vaccua. These solitons, similarly to the case of polyacetelene, are fractionally charged states. In addition to the topological domain walls, there are polaron states with discrete energies within the energy gap. The energies and shapes of these localized mid-gap states should be accessible via STM spectroscopy.

Schwinger-Keldysh Approach to Disordered and Interacting Electron Systems: Derivation of Finkelstein's Renormalization Group Equations

We develop a dynamical approach based on the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism to derive a field-theoretic description of disordered and interacting electron systems. We calculate within this formalism the perturbative RG equations for interacting electrons expanded around a diffusive Fermi liquid fixed point, as obtained originally by Finkelstein using replicas. The major simplifying feature of this approach, as compared to Finkelstein's is that instead of $N \to 0$ replicas, we only need to consider N=2 species. We compare the dynamical Schwinger-Keldysh approach and the replica methods, and we present a simple and pedagogical RG procedure to obtain Finkelstein's RG equations.

Colored noise in the fractional Hall effect: duality relations and exact results

We study noise in the problem of tunneling between fractional quantum Hall edge states within a four probe geometry. We explore the implications of the strong-weak coupling duality symmetry existent in this problem for relating the various density-density auto-correlations and cross-correlations between the four terminals. We identify correlations that transform as either ``odd'' or ``anti-symmetric'', or ``even'' or ``symmetric'' quantities under duality. We show that the low frequency noise is colored, and that the deviations from white noise are exactly related to the differential conductance. We show explicitly that the relationship between the slope of the low frequency noise spectrum and the differential conductance follows from an identity that holds to {\it all} orders in perturbation theory, supporting the results implied by the duality symmetry. This generalizes the results of quantum supression of the finite frequency noise spectrum to Luttinger liquids and fractional statistics quasiparticles.

Two-dimensional conformal field theory for disordered systems at criticality

Using a Kac-Moody current algebra with $U(1/1)\times U(1/1)$ graded symmetry, we describe a class of (possibly disordered) critical points in two spatial dimensions. The critical points are labelled by the triplets $(l,m,k^{\ }_j)$, where $l$ is an odd integer, $m$ is an integer, and $k^{\ }_j$ is real. For most such critical points, we show that there are infinite hierarchies of relevant operators with negative scaling dimensions. To interpret this result, we show that the line of critical points $(1,1,k^{\ }_j>0)$ is realized by a field theory of massless Dirac fermions in the presence of $U(N)$ vector gauge-like static impurities. Along the disordered critical line $(1,1,k^{\ }_j>0)$, we find an infinite hierarchy of relevant operators with negative scaling dimensions $\{Δ^{\ }_q|q\in {\rm I}\hskip -0.08 true cm{\bf N}\}$, which are related to the disorder average over the $q$-th moment of the single-particle Green function. Those relevant operators can be induced by non-Gaussian moments of the probability distribution of a mass-like static disorder.
