Optical gain in DNA-DCM for lasing in photonic materials

We present a detailed study of the gain length in an active medium obtained by doping of DNA strands with DCM dye molecules. The superior thermal stability of the composite and its low quenching, permits to obtain optical gain coefficient larger than 300 cm^-1. We also show that such an active material is excellent for integration into photonic nano-structures, to achieve, for example, efficient random lasing emission, and fluorescent photonic crystals.

Time-dependent Nonlinear Optical Susceptibility of an Out-of-Equilibrium Soft Material

We investigate the time-dependent nonlinear optical absorption of a clay dispersion (Laponite) in organic dye (Rhodamine B) water solution displaying liquid-arrested state transition. Specifically, we determine the characteristic time $τ_D$ of the nonlinear susceptibility build-up due as to the Soret effect. By comparing $τ_D$ with the relaxation time provided by standard dynamic light scattering measurements we report on the decoupling of the two collective diffusion times at the two very different length scales during the aging of the out-of-equilibrium system. With this demonstration experiment we also show the potentiality of nonlinear optics measurements in the study of the late stage of arrest in soft materials.

Ultrashort pulse propagation and the Anderson localization

We investigate the dynamics of a 10 fs light pulse propagating in a random medium by the direct solution of the 3D Maxwell equations. Our approach employs molecular dynamics to generate a distribution of spherical scatterers and a parallel finite-difference time-domain code for the vectorial wave propagation. We calculate the disorder-averaged energy velocity and the decay time of the transmitted pulse Versus the localization length for an increasing refractive index.

Observation of a gradient catastrophe generating solitons

We investigate the propagation of a dark beam in a defocusing medium in the strong nonlinear regime. We observe for the first time a shock fan filled with non-interacting one-dimensional grey solitons that emanates from a gradient catastrophe developing around a null of the optical intensity. Remarkably this scenario turns out to be very robust, persisting also when the material nonlocal response averages the nonlinearity over dimensions much larger than the emerging soliton filaments.

Condensation in disordered lasers: theory, 3D+1 simulations and experiments

The complex processes underlying the generation of a coherent-like emission from the multiple-scattering of photons and wave-localization in the presence of structural disorder are still mostly un-explored. Here we show that a single nonlinear Schroedinger equation, playing the role of the Schawlow-Townes law for standard lasers, quantitatively reproduces experimental results and three-dimensional time-domain parallel simulations of a colloidal laser system.

Free-energy transition in a gas of non-interacting nonlinear wave-particles

We investigate the dynamics of a gas of non-interacting particle-like soliton waves, demonstrating that phase transitions originate from their collective behavior. This is predicted by solving exactly the nonlinear equations and by employing methods of the statistical mechanics of chaos. In particular, we show that a suitable free energy undergoes a metamorphosis as the input excitation is increased, thereby developing a first order phase transition whose measurable manifestation is the formation of shock waves. This demonstrates that even the simplest phase-space dynamics, involving independent (uncoupled) degrees of freedom, can sustain critical phenomena.

Schroedinger-like PageRank equation and localization in the WWW

The WorldWide Web is one of the most important communication systems we use in our everyday life. Despite its central role, the growth and the development of the WWW is not controlled by any central authority. This situation has created a huge ensemble of connections whose complexity can be fruitfully described and quantified by network theory. One important application that allows to sort out the information present in these connections is given by the PageRank alghorithm. Computation of this quantity is usually made iteratively with a large use of computational time. In this paper we show that the PageRank can be expressed in terms of a wave function obeying a Schroedinger-like equation. In particular the topological disorder given by the unbalance of outgoing and ingoing links between pages, induces wave function and potential structuring. This allows to directly localize the pages with the largest score. Through this new representation we can now compute the PageRank without iterative techniques. For most of the cases of interest our method is faster than the original one. Our results also clarify the role of topology in the diffusion of information within complex networks. The whole approach opens the possibility to novel techniques inspired by quantum physics for the analysis of the WWW properties.

Dynamic light diffusion, Anderson localization and lasing in disordered inverted opals: 3D ab-initio Maxwell-Bloch computation

We report on 3D time-domain parallel simulations of Anderson localization of light in inverted disordered opals displaying a complete photonic band-gap. We investigate dynamic diffusion processes induced by femtosecond laser excitations, calculate the diffusion constant and the decay-time distribution versus the strength of the disorder. We report evidence of the transition from delocalized Bloch oscillations to strongly localized resonances in self-starting laser processes.

Shocks in nonlocal media

We investigate the formation of collisionless shocks along the spatial profile of a gaussian laser beam propagating in nonlocal nonlinear media. For defocusing nonlinearity the shock survives the smoothing effect of the nonlocal response, though its dynamics is qualitatively affected by the latter, whereas for focusing nonlinearity it dominates over filamentation. The patterns observed in a thermal defocusing medium are interpreted in the framework of our theory.

Quantum electromagnetic X-waves

We show that two distinct quantum states of the electromagnetic field can be associated to a classical vector X wave or a propagation-invariant solution of Maxwell equations. The difference between the two states is of pure quantum mechanical origin since they are internally entangled and disentangled, respectively and can be generated by different linear or nonlinear processes. Detection and generation of Schrödinger-cat states comprising two entangled X-waves and their possible applications are discussed.

Dynamics of a diathermal versus an adiabatic piston in an ideal gas: Langevin's and phase-space approaches

We present a comparison between the random motion of an adiabatic and a diathermal piston sliding in a perfect gas. In particular, their dynamical behaviour, if investigated by means of Langevin's approach, shows the amplitude of the adiabatic-piston random displacements around the equilibrium position to be much larger (by a factor (M/m)^(1/2), where M and m are the piston mass and the mass of the single gas molecule) than that of the diathermal piston. The origin of this intriguing difference, which is accounted for in the frame of Langevin's approach, is also explored in terms of a space-phase analysis.

Light diffusion and localization in 3D nonlinear disordered media

Using a 3D Finite-Difference Time-Domain parallel code, we report on the linear and nonlinear propagation of light pulses in a disordered assembly of scatterers, whose spatial distribution is generated by a Molecular Dynamics code; refractive index dispersion is also taken into account. We calculate the static and dynamical diffusion constant of light, while considering a pulsed excitation. Our results are in quantitative agreement with reported experiments, also furnishing evidence of a non-exponential decay of the transmitted pulse in the linear regime and in the presence of localized modes. By using an high power excitation, we numerically demonstrate the ``modulational instability random laser'': at high peak input powers energy is transferred to localized states from the input pulse, via third-order nonlinearity and optical parametric amplification, and this process is signed by a power-dependent non-exponential time-decay of the transmitted pulse.

In an AlGaAs rod with an air void, we show that phase-matched second-harmonic generation could be achieved in a wide spectral range employing state-of-the-art nanotechnology.

Aging of the Nonlinear Optical Susceptibility of colloidal solutions

Using Z-scan and dynamic light scattering measurements we investigate the nonlinear optics response of a colloidal solution undergoing dynamics slowing down with age. We study the high optical nonlinearity of an organic dye (Rhodamine B) dispersed in a water-clay (Laponite) solution, at different clay concentrations (2.0 wt% - 2.6 wt%), experiencing the gelation process. We determine the clay platelets self diffusion coefficient and, by its comparison with the structural relaxation time, we conclude that the gelation process proceeds through the structuring of interconnecting clay platelets network rather than through clusters growth and aggregation.

Laser beam filamentation in fractal aggregates

We investigate filamentation of a cw laser beam in soft matter such as colloidal suspensions and fractal gels. The process, driven by electrostriction, is strongly affected by material properties, which are taken into account via the static structure factor, and have impact on the statistics of the light filaments.

Glassy behavior of light in random lasers

A theoretical analysis [Angelani et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 065702 (2006)] predicts glassy behaviour of light in a nonlinear random medium. This implies slow dynamics related to the presence of many metastable states. We consider very general equations (that also apply to other systems, like Bose-Condensed gases) describing light in a disordered non-linear medium and through some approximations we relate them to a mean-field spin-glass-like model. The model is solved by the replica method, and replica-symmetry breaking phase transition is predicted. The transition describes a mode-locking process in which the phases of the modes are locked to random (history and sample-dependent) values. The results are based on very general theory, and embrace a variety of physical phenomena.

Callen's Adiabatic Piston and the Limits of the Second Law of Thermodynamics

The limits of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which reigns undisputed in the macroscopic world, are investigated at the mesoscopic level, corresponding to spatial dimensions of a few microns. An extremely simple isolated system, modeled after Callen's adiabatic piston, [1] can, under appropriate conditions, be described as a self-organizing Brownian motor and shown to exhibit a perpetuum mobile behavior.

Complex dynamics and configurational entropy of spatial optical solitons in nonlocal media

Intense light propagating in a nonlinear medium can generate an ensemble of interacting filaments of light, or spatial solitons. Using nematic liquid crystals, we demonstrate that they undergo a collective behavior typical of complex systems, including the formation of clusters and sound-like vibrations, as well as the reduction of the configurational entropy, controlled by the degree of nonlocality of the medium.
