An $SU(15)$ Approach to Bifermion Classification

One interesting way to extend the standard model is the hypothesis of bifermions which are bosons which couple to pairs of quarks and leptons. We point out that $SU(15)$ grand unification gives a natural way to classify bifermions and discuss leptoquarks, biquarks and bileptons. In fact, $SU(15)$ provides an ideal covering group as it contains all possible bifermions within a single model.

Non-Leptonic Decays of Bileptons

We provide a detailed analysis of the decays of doubly-charged bilepton gauge bosons $Y^{\pm\pm}$, as predicted in models based on a $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L\times U(1)_X$ symmetry. In addition to the decay modes into same-sign lepton pairs, which were already investigated in scenarios wherein each branching ratio was about one third, there are, depending on the mass spectrum, possible non-leptonic decays which reduce the leptonic rates. These non-leptonic decays are typically into a light quark (antiquark) and a heavy TeV-scale antiquark (quark), which carries double lepton number and decays via virtual bileptons. We choose two benchmark points to represent the particle spectrum and present a phenomenological analysis of such decays. We find that, while the LHC statistics are too low, even in the high-luminosity phase, they can lead to a visible signal at a future 100 TeV hadron collider (FCC-$hh$). A more exhaustive exploration with a rigorous inclusion of tagging efficiencies, detector simulations and higher-order corrections to the partonic cross section, aiming at assessing the reach of LHC and FCC-$hh$ for bileptons as a function of the model parameters, as well as a recast of four-top searches in terms of the bilepton model, are deferred to future work.

TTT in CFT: Trace Identities and the Conformal Anomaly Effective Action

Stress-energy correlation functions in a general Conformal Field Theory (CFT) in four dimensions are described in a fully covariant approach, as metric variations of the quantum effective action in an arbitrary curved space background field. All Conservation, Trace and Conformal Ward Identities (CWIs), including contact terms, are completely fixed in this covariant approach. The Trace and CWIs are anomalous. Their anomalous contributions may be computed unambiguously by metric variation of the exact 1PI quantum effective action determined by the conformal anomaly of $\left\langle T^{μν}\right\rangle$ in $d = 4$ curved space. This action implies the existence of massless propagator poles in three and higher point correlators of $T^{μν}$ . The metric variations of the anomaly effective action in its local form in terms of a scalar conformalon field are carried out explicitly for the case of the correlator of three CFT stress-energy tensors, and the result is shown to coincide with the algebraic reconstruction of $\left\langle TTT\right\rangle$ from its transverse, tracefree parts, determined independently by the solution of the CWIs in d dimensional flat space in the momentum representation. This demonstrates that the specific analytic structure and massless poles predicted by the general curved space anomaly effective action are in fact a necessary feature of the exact solution of the anomalous CWIs in any $d = 4$ CFT.

Dark Matter with Stuckelberg Axions

We review a class of models which generalize the traditional Peccei-Quinn (PQ) axion solution by a Stückelberg pseudoscalar. Such axion models represent a significant variant with respect to earlier scenarios where axion fields were associated with global anomalies, because of the Stückelberg field, which is essential for the cancellation of gauge anomalies in the presence of extra $U(1)$ symmetries. The extra neutral currents associated to these models have been investigated in the past in orientifold models with intersecting branes, under the assumption that the Stückelberg scale was in the multi-TeV region. Such constructions, at the field theory level, are quite general and can be interpreted as the four-dimensional field theory realization of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation of string theory. We present an overview of models of this type in the TeV/multi TeV range in their original formulation and their recent embeddings into an ordinary GUT theory, presenting an $E_6\times U(1)_X$ model as an example. In this case the model contains two axions, the first corresponding to a Peccei-Quinn axion, whose misalignment takes place at the QCD phase transition, with a mass in the meV region and which solves the strong CP problem. The second axion is ultralight, in the $10^{-20}-10^{-22}$ eV region, due to a misalignment and a decoupling taking place at the GUT scale. The two scales introduced by the PQ solution, the PQ breaking scale and the misalignment scale at the QCD hadron transition, become the Planck and the GUT scales respectively, with a global anomaly replaced by a gauge anomaly. The periodic potential and the corresponding oscillations are related to a particle whose De Broglie wavelength can reach 10 kpc. Such a sub-galactic scale has been deemed necessary in order to resolve several dark matter issues at the astrophysical level.

Possible Bilepton Resonances in Like-Sign Pairs

We consider pair production of bileptons $Y^{++}Y^{--}$ at the LHC for the presently accumulated integrated luminosity of $150/fm$. It is shown that the entire mass range 800 GeV $\leq$ M(Y) $\leq$ 2000 GeV can be successfully searched. A bilepton resonance will have an exceptionally large ratio of signal to background because the standard model prediction is so infinitesimal. A $5σ$ discovery is quite feasible.

Exact Correlators from Conformal Ward Identities in Momentum Space and the Perturbative $TJJ$ Vertex

We present a general study of 3-point functions of conformal field theory in momentum space, following a reconstruction method for tensor correlators, based on the solution of the conformal Ward identities (CWI' s), introduced in recent works by Bzowski, McFadden and Skenderis (BMS). We investigate and detail the structure of the CWI's, their non-perturbative solutions and the transition to momentum space, comparing them to perturbation theory by taking QED as an example. We then proceed with an analysis of the $TJJ$ correlator, presenting independent and detailed re-derivations of the conformal equations in the reconstruction method of BMS, originally formulated using a minimal tensor basis in the transverse traceless sector. A careful comparison with a second basis introduced in previous studies shows that this correlator is affected by one anomaly pole in the graviton (T) line, induced by renormalization. The result shows that the origin of the anomaly, in this correlator, should be necessarily attributed to the exchange of a massless effective degree of freedom. Our results are then exemplified in massless QED at one-loop in $d$-dimensions, expressed in terms of perturbative master integrals. An independent analysis of the Fuchsian character of the solutions, which bypasses the 3K integrals, is also presented. We show that the combination of field theories at one-loop - with a specific field content of degenerate massless scalar and fermions - is sufficient to generate the complete non-perturbative solution, in agreement with a previous study in coordinate space. The result shows that free conformal field theories, in specific dimensions, arrested at one-loop, reproduce the general result for the $TJJ$. Analytical checks of this correspondence are presented in $d=3,4$ and $5$ spacetime dimensions[..].

The General 3-Graviton Vertex ($TTT$) of Conformal Field Theories in Momentum Space in $d=4$

We present a study of the correlation function of three stress-energy tensors in $d$ dimensions using free field theory realizations, and compare them to the exact solutions of their conformal Ward identities (CWI's) obtained by a general approach in momentum space. The identification of the corresponding form factors is performed within a reconstruction method, based on the identification of the transverse traceless components $(A_i)$ of the same correlator. The solutions of the primary CWI' s are found by exploiting the universality of the Fuchsian indices of the conformal operators and a re-arrangement of the corresponding inhomogenous hypergeometric systems. We confirm the number of constants in the solution of the primary CWI's of previous analysis. In our comparison with perturbation theory, we discuss scalar, fermion and spin 1 exchanges at 1-loop in dimensional regularization. Explicit checks in $d=3$ and $d=5$ prove the consistency of this correspondence. By matching the 3 constants of the CFT solution with the 3 free field theory sectors available in d=4, the general solutions of the conformal constraints is expressed just in terms of ordinary scalar 2- and 3-point functions $(B_0,C_0)$. We show how the renormalized $d=4$ TTT vertex separates naturally into the sum of a traceless and an anomaly part, the latter determined by the anomaly functional and generated by the renormalization of the correlator in dimensional regularization. The result confirms the emergence of anomaly poles and effective massless exchanges as a specific signature of conformal anomalies in momentum space, directly connected to the renormalization of the corresponding gravitational vertices, generalizing the behaviour found for the $TJJ$ vertex in previous works.

Conformal Ward Identities and the Coupling of QED and QCD to Gravity

We present a general study of 3-point functions of conformal field theory (CFT) in momentum space, following a reconstruction method for tensor correlators, based on the solution of the conformal Ward identities (CWIs), introduced in recent works. We investigate and detail the structure of the CWIs and their non-perturbative solutions, and compare them to perturbation theory, taking QED and QCD as examples. Exact solutions of CFT's in the flat background limit in momentum space are matched by the perturbative realizations in free field theories, showing that the origin the conformal anomaly is related to efffective scalar interactions, generated by the renormalization of the longitudinal components of the corresponding operators.

Extra Quarks and Bileptons in BSM Physics in a $331$ Model

We describe some salient features of the $331_F$ (Frampton-Pisano-Pleitez) bilepton model, in which the constraints of anomaly cancelation require the number of generations to be three. In a class of six models, four of which characterised by a $β$ parameter describing the embedding of the hypercharge in the $SU(3)_L$ symmetry, a specific choice for $β$ allows bileptons in the spectrum, i.e. vectors and scalars of lepton numbers $\pm 2$. At the same time the model allows exotic quarks, with the third quark generation treated asymmetrically respect to the other two. Bileptons generate specific signatures in the form of multilepton final states in Drell-Yan like processes, with and without associated jets, which can be searched for at the LHC.

Exploring Scalar and Vector Bileptons at the LHC

We present an analysis on the production of two same-sign lepton pairs at the LHC, mediated by bileptons in the $SU(3)_c\times SU(3)_L\times U(1)_X$ theory, the so-called 331 model. Compared to other 331 scenarios, in this model the embedding of the hypercharge is obtained with the addition of 3 exotic quarks and doubly-charged vector gauge bosons with lepton numbers $\pm 2$ in the spectrum ($Y^{\pm\pm}$), which can mediate the production of four-lepton final states. Furthermore, a complete description of the model requires the introduction of a Higgs scalar sector, which is a sextet of $SU(3)_L$, necessary in order to correctly account for the lepton masses. As a result of this, new doubly-charged scalar states $H^{\pm\pm}$ are part of the spectrum as well and can in principle compete with the vector bileptons in giving rise to four-lepton final states. We investigate both channels and study several observables at the LHC, for both signal and Standard Model $ZZ$ background. With respect to previous work on vector- and scalar-bilepton production, we use the most updated exclusion limits at the LHC and implement the 331 model in a full Monte Carlo simulation code, capable of being interfaced with any analysis framework. Our result is that the 331 signal can be discriminated from the background with a significance of 6-9 standard deviations, depending on the LHC luminosity, with the vector bileptons dominating over the scalar ones.

Remarks on Dark Matter Constituents with Many Solar Masses

Dark matter constituents of many solar masses will accrete normal matter which emits X-rays that can be downgraded to microwaves which may distort the precisely-measured black-body spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background. However, it is known from elsewhere that spherical models of accretion vastly overestimate the amount accreted and consequently the emitted X-rays. Therefore, exclusion plots based on spherical accretion for the allowed fraction of the dark matter versus the MACHO mass give upper limits on intermediate-mass MACHOs which are too severe, sometimes by orders of magnitude.

Dark Matter as Ultralight Axion-Like particle in $E_6 \times U(1)_X$ GUT with QCD Axion

Axion-like fields are naturally generated by a mechanism of anomaly cancellation of one or more anomalous gauge abelian symmetries at the Planck scale, emerging as duals of a two-form from the massless bosonic sector of string theory. This suggests an analogy of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation, at field theory level, which results in one or more Stueckelberg pseudoscalars. In the case of a single Stueckelberg pseudoscalar $b$, vacuum misalignments at phase transitions in the early Universe at the GUT scale provide a small mass - due to instanton suppression of the periodic potential - for a component of $b$, denoted as $χ$ and termed the "axi-Higgs", which is a physical axion-like particle. The coupling of the axi-Higgs to the gauge sector via Wess-Zumino terms is suppressed by the Planck mass, which guarantees its decoupling, while its angle of misalignment is related to $M_{GUT}$. We build a gauged $E_6\times U(1)$ model with anomalous $U(1)$. It contains both an automatic invisible QCD axion and an ultra-light axi-Higgs. The invisible axion present in the model solves the strong CP problem and has mass in the conventional range while the axi-Higgs, which can act as dark matter, is sufficiently light ($10^{-22} \textrm{ eV} < m_χ < 10^{-20} \textrm{ eV}$) to solve short-distance problems which confront other cold dark matter candidates.

Renormalization, Conformal Ward Identities and the Origin of a Conformal Anomaly Pole

We investigate the emergence of a conformal anomaly pole in conformal field theories in the case of the $TJJ$ correlator. We show how it comes to be generated in dimensional renormalization, using a basis of 13 form factors (the $F$-basis), where only one of them requires renormalization $(F_{13})$, extending previous studies. We then combine recent results on the structure of the non-perturbative solutions of the conformal Ward identities (CWI's) for the $TJJ$ in momentum space, expressed in terms of a minimal set of 4 form factors ($A-$ basis), with the properties of the $F$-basis, and show how the singular behaviour of the corresponding form factors in both basis can be related. The result proves the centrality of such massless effective interactions induced by the anomaly, which have recently found realization in solid state, in the theory of topological insulators and of Weyl semimetals. This pattern is confirmed in massless abelian and nonabelian theories (QED and QCD) investigated at one-loop.

Bilepton Signatures at the LHC

We discuss the main signatures of the Bilepton Model at the Large Hadron Collider, focusing on its gauge boson sector. The model is characterised by five additional gauge bosons, four charged and one neutral, beyond those of the Standard Model, plus three exotic quarks. The latter turn into ordinary quarks with the emission of bilepton doublets $(Y^{++},Y^{+})$ and $(Y^{--},Y^{-})$ of lepton number $L=-2$ and $L=+2$ respectively, with the doubly-charged bileptons decaying into same-sign lepton pairs. We perform a phenomenological analysis investigating processes with two doubly-charged bileptons and two jets at the LHC and find that, setting suitable cuts on pseudorapidities and transverse momenta of final-states jets and leptons, the model yields a visible signal and the main Standard Model backgrounds can be suppressed. Compared to previous studies, our investigation is based on a full Monte Carlo implementation of the model and accounts for parton showers, hadronization and an actual jet-clustering algorithm for both signal and Standard Model background, thus providing an optimal framework for an actual experimental search.

$Z'$, Higgses and heavy neutrinos in $U(1)'$ models: from the LHC to the GUT scale

We study a class of non-exotic minimal $U(1) '$ extensions of the Standard Model, which includes all scenarios that are anomaly-free with the ordinary fermion content augmented by one Right-Handed neutrino per generation, wherein the new Abelian gauge group is spontaneously broken by the non-zero Vacuum Expectation Value of an additional Higgs singlet field, in turn providing mass to a $Z'$ state. By adopting the $B-L$ example, whose results can be recast into those pertaining to the whole aforementioned class, and allowing for both scalar and gauge mixing, we first extract the surviving parameter space in presence of up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints. Over the corresponding parameter configurations, we then delineate the high energy behaviour of such constructs in terms of their stability and perturbativity. Finally, we highlight key production and decay channels of the new states entering the spectra of this class of models, i.e., heavy neutrinos, a second Higgs state and the $Z'$, which are amenable to experimental investigation at the Large Hadron Collider. We therefore set the stage to establish a direct link between measurements obtainable at the Electro-Weak scale and the dynamics of the underlying model up to those where a Grand Unification Theory embedding a $U(1)'$ can be realised.

From Planck data to Planck era: Observational tests of Holographic Cosmology

We test a class of holographic models for the very early universe against cosmological observations and find that they are competitive to the standard $Λ$CDM model of cosmology. These models are based on three dimensional perturbative super-renormalizable Quantum Field Theory (QFT), and while they predict a different power spectrum from the standard power-law used in $Λ$CDM, they still provide an excellent fit to data (within their regime of validity). By comparing the Bayesian evidence for the models, we find that $Λ$CDM does a better job globally, while the holographic models provide a (marginally) better fit to data without very low multipoles (i.e. $l\lesssim 30$), where the dual QFT becomes non-perturbative. Observations can be used to exclude some QFT models, while we also find models satisfying all phenomenological constraints: the data rules out the dual theory being Yang-Mills theory coupled to fermions only, but allows for Yang-Mills theory coupled to non-minimal scalars with quartic interactions. Lattice simulations of 3d QFT's can provide non-perturbative predictions for large-angle statistics of the cosmic microwave background, and potentially explain its apparent anomalies.

Phenomenology of minimal Z' models: from the LHC to the GUT scale

We consider a class of minimal abelian extensions of the Standard Model with an extra neutral gauge boson $Z'$ at the TeV scale. In these scenarios an extended scalar sector and heavy right-handed neutrinos are naturally envisaged. We present some of their striking signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, the most interesting arising from a $Z'$ decaying to heavy neutrino pairs as well as a heavy scalar decaying to two Standard Model Higgses. Using renormalisation group methods, we characterise the high energy behaviours of these extensions and exploit the constraints imposed by the embedding into a wider GUT scenario.

$SU(3)^p$ Quiver Theories with ${\cal N} = 0$ for $p=8$ and $9$

We close a gap in previous studies of nonsupersymmetric ${\cal N}=0$ quiver gauge theories from a phenomenological point of view aimed at acquiring specific proposals for models beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Because $SU(3)$ is the gauge group of QCD we fix $N=3$ and vary only the $Z_p$ abelian orbifold. The values $1 \leq p \leq 7$ have been previously fully discussed as well as one special case, discovered by happenstance, of $p=12$. The values $p = 8$ and $p=9$ are discussed comprehensively in the present paper including the electroweak mixing angle, gauge coupling unification, spontaneous symmetry breakdown to the standard model, and the occurrence of three quark-lepton families. Two promising quiver node identifications are discovered for $p=8$ and three for $p=9$. All of these merit further study as BSM candidates.
