Schauder estimates for germs of distributions on smooth manifolds

We discuss germs of distributions on $d-$dimensional smooth Riemannian manifolds and, in particular, we derive \emph{multi-level Schauder estimates} without making any further assumptions on the underlying geometry. As a preliminary step, we define the notions of coherence and homogeneity for germs of distributions on open subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \ge 1$. Subsequently, we formulate both the reconstruction theorem, cf., [CZ20], and the Schauder estimates, cf., [BCZ24], in this setting. Leveraging the properties of the exponential map, we extend these results to Riemannian manifolds. Specifically, we devise a counterpart of the reconstruction theorem previously established in the literature [RS21], while additionally proving the regularity of the reconstructed distribution in suitable H\"older-Zygmund spaces. Finally, by introducing a novel concept of $\beta$-regularizing kernels on Riemannian manifolds, we establish Schauder estimates for coherent and homogeneous germs in this context.

Boundary Conditions and Dirac Fields on AdS$_n$

We study Dirac fields on AdS$_n$ in both global and Poincar\'e charts and, for each mass window, we classify the boundary conditions at conformal infinity that ensure the existence of advanced and retarded propagators. We distinguish the well-known MIT--bag class from a generalized family, thereby extending to arbitrary dimensions the procedure initiated by Blanco. As in the scalar case, we show that suitable generalized boundary data can support bound states. In four dimensions we work out two explicit examples: (i) the MIT case, for which we construct the advanced/retarded propagators and the two-point function of the associated ground state and (ii) a representative generalized boundary condition, for which we construct the propagators and exhibit a normalizable bound state.

The modular Hamiltonian in asymptotically flat spacetime conformal to Minkowski

We consider a four-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime $(M,g)$ conformal to Minkowski spacetime, together with a massless, conformally coupled scalar field. Using a bulk-to-boundary correspondence, one can establish the existence of an injective $*$-homomorphism $\Upsilon_M$ between $\mathcal{W}(M)$, the Weyl algebra of observables on $M$ and a counterpart which is defined intrinsically on future null infinity $\Im^+\simeq\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{S}^2$, a component of the conformal boundary of $(M,g)$. Using invariance under the asymptotic symmetry group of $\Im^+$, we can individuate thereon a distinguished two-point correlation function whose pull-back to $M$ via $\Upsilon_M$ identifies a quasi-free Hadamard state for the bulk algebra of observables. In this setting, if we consider $\mathsf{V}^+_x$, a future light cone stemming from $x\in M$ as well as $\mathcal{W}(\mathsf{V}^+_x)=\mathcal{W}(M)|_{\mathsf{V}^+_x}$, its counterpart at the boundary is the Weyl subalgebra generated by suitable functions localized in $\mathsf{K}_x$, a positive half strip on $\Im^+$. To each such cone, we associate a standard subspace of the boundary one-particle Hilbert space, which coincides with the one associated naturally to $\mathsf{K}_x$. We extend such correspondence replacing $\mathsf{K}_x$ and $\mathsf{V}^+_x$ with deformed counterparts, denoted by $\mathsf{S}_C$ and $\mathsf{V}_C$. In addition, since the one particle Hilbert space at the boundary decomposes as a direct integral on the sphere of $U(1)$-currents defined on the real line, we prove that also the generator of the modular group associated to the standard subspace of $\mathsf{V}_C$ decomposes as a suitable direct integral. This result allows us to study the relative entropy between coherent states of the algebras associated to the deformed cones $\mathsf{V}_C$ establishing the quantum null energy condition.

Spectral asymmetry via pseudodifferential projections: the massless Dirac operator

A new approach to the study of spectral asymmetry for systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) on closed manifolds was proposed in a recent series of papers by the first author and collaborator. They showed that information on spectral asymmetry can be encoded within and recovered from a negative order pseudodifferential operator -- the asymmetry operator -- constructed from appropriately defined pseudodifferential (spectral) projections. In this manuscript we apply these techniques to the study of the massless Dirac operator; in particular, we compute the principal symbol of the asymmetry operator, accounting for the underlying gauge invariance.

Quantum superposition of boundary condition in $\mathrm{PAdS}_2$

We explore the quantum superposition of boundary conditions in the context of the Poincar\'e patch of the two-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space ($\mathrm{PAdS}_2$). Focusing on Robin (mixed) boundary conditions (RBC), we investigate the response function of the Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detector interacting with two or more scalar fields, each respecting a different boundary condition. The role of this quantum superposition is two-fold: i) it may represent different fields propagating on the same spacetime and interacting with an UDW detector or ii) it may describe an UDW detector on a superposition of spacetimes, each one with an inequivalent propagating field.

Conservation Law and Trace Anomaly for the Stress Energy Tensor of a Self-Interacting Scalar Field

We consider a self-interacting, massive, real scalar field on a four-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime and the associated stress-energy tensor. Using techniques proper of the algebraic approach to perturbative quantum field theory, we study the associated, Wick-ordered, quantum observable. In particular we generalize a construction, first developed in the free field theory scenario by Moretti in [Mor03], aimed at exploiting the existing freedoms in the definition of the classical stress-energy tensor, in order to define a quantum counterpart which is divergence free. We focus on Minkowski spacetime proving that this procedure can be adapted also to cubic or quartic self-interactions, at least up to order $\mathcal{O}(\lambda^3)$ in perturbation theory. We remark that this result can be extended to arbitrary globally hyperbolic spacetimes, although, in this case one needs to exploit the existing regularization freedom in the construction of the Wick ordered stress-energy tensor.

Holographic Mixing and Fock Space Dynamics of Causal Fermion Systems

A limiting case is considered in which the causal action principle for causal fermion systems describing Minkowski space gives rise to the linear Fock space dynamics of quantum electrodynamics. The quantum nature of the bosonic field is a consequence of the stochastic description of a multitude of fluctuating fields coupled to non-commuting operators, taking into account dephasing effects. The scaling of all error terms is specified. Our analysis leads to the concept of holographic mixing, which is introduced and explained in detail.

On the interplay between boundary conditions and the Lorentzian Wetterich equation

In the framework of the functional renormalization group and of the perturbative, algebraic approach to quantum field theory (pAQFT), in [DDPR23] it has been derived a Lorentian version of a flow equation \`a la Wetterich, which can be used to study non linear, quantum scalar field theories on a globally hyperbolic spacetime. In this work we show that the realm of validity of this result can be extended to study interacting scalar field theories on globally hyperbolic manifolds with a timelike boundary. By considering the specific examples of half Minkowski spacetime and of the Poincar\'e patch of Anti-de Sitter, we show that the form of the Lorentzian Wetterich equation is strongly dependent on the boundary conditions assigned to the underlying field theory. In addition, using a numerical approach, we are able to provide strong evidences that there is a qualitative and not only a quantitative difference in the associated flow and we highlight this feature by considering Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions on half Minkowski spacetime.

On the stochastic Sine-Gordon model: an interacting field theory approach

We investigate the massive Sine-Gordon model in the finite ultraviolet regime on the two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime $(\mathbb{R}^2,η)$ with an additive Gaussian white noise. In particular we construct the expectation value and the correlation functions of a solution of the underlying stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) as a power series in the coupling constant, proving ultimately uniform convergence. This result is obtained combining an approach first devised in [11] to study SPDEs at a perturbative level with the one discussed in [4] to construct the quantum sine-Gordon model using techniques proper of the perturbative, algebraic approach to quantum field theory (pAQFT). At a formal level the relevant expectation values are realized as the evaluation of suitably constructed functionals over $C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^2)$. In turn, these are elements of a distinguished algebra whose product is a deformation of the pointwise one, by means of a kernel which is a linear combination of two components. The first encompasses the information of the Feynmann propagator built out of an underlying Hadamard, quantum state, while the second encodes the correlation codified by the Gaussian white noise. In our analysis, first of all we extend the results obtained in [3,4] proving the existence of a convergent modified version of the S-matrix and of an interacting field as elements of the underlying algebra of functionals. Subsequently we show that it is possible to remove the contribution due to the Feynmann propagator by taking a suitable $\hbar\to 0^+$-limit, hence obtaining the sought expectation value of the solution and of the correlation functions of the SPDE associated to the stochastic Sine-Gordon model.

A microlocal investigation of stochastic partial differential equations for spinors with an application to the Thirring model

On a $d$-dimensional Riemannian, spin manifold $(M,g)$ we consider non-linear, stochastic partial differential equations for spinor fields, driven by a Dirac operator and coupled to an additive Gaussian, vector-valued white noise. We extend to the case in hand a procedure, introduced in [DDRZ20] for the scalar counterpart, which allows to compute at a perturbative level the expectation value of the solutions as well as the associated correlation functions accounting intrinsically for the underlying renormalization freedoms. This framework relies strongly on tools proper of microlocal analysis and it is inspired by the algebraic approach to quantum field theory. As a concrete example we apply it to a stochastic version of the Thirring model proving in particular that it lies in the subcritical regime if $d\leq 2$.

On a Microlocal Version of Young's Product Theorem

A key result in distribution theory is Young's product theorem which states that the product between two Hölder distributions $u\in\mathcal{C}^α(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and $v\in\mathcal{C}^β(\mathbb{R}^d)$ can be unambiguously defined if $α+β>0$. We revisit the problem of multiplying two Hölder distributions from the viewpoint of microlocal analysis, using techniques proper of Sobolev wavefront set. This allows us to establish sufficient conditions which allow the multiplication of two Hölder distributions even when $α+β\leq 0$.

Boundary conditions and infrared divergences

We review the procedure to construct quasi-free ground states, for real scalar fields whose dynamics is dictated by the Klein-Gordon equation, on standard static Lorentzian manifolds with a time-like boundary. We observe that, depending on the assigned boundary condition of Robin type, this procedure does not always lead to the existence of a suitable bi-distribution $w_2\in \mathcal{D}'(M\times M)$ due to the presence of infrared divergences. As a concrete example we consider a Bertotti-Robinson spacetime in two different coordinate patches. In one case we show that infrared divergences do not occur only for Dirichlet boundary conditions as one might expect a priori, while, in the other case, we prove that they occur only when Neumann boundary conditions are imposed at the time-like boundary.

An algebraic correspondence between stochastic differential equations and the Martin-Siggia-Rose formalism

In the realm of complex systems, dynamics is often modeled in terms of a non-linear, stochastic, ordinary differential equation (SDE) with either an additive or a multiplicative Gaussian white noise. In addition to a well-established collection of results proving existence and uniqueness of the solutions, it is of particular relevance the explicit computation of expectation values and correlation functions, since they encode the key physical information of the system under investigation. A pragmatically efficient way to dig out these quantities consists of the Martin-Siggia-Rose (MSR) formalism which establishes a correspondence between a large class of SDEs and suitably constructed field theories formulated by means of a path integral approach. Despite the effectiveness of this duality, there is no corresponding, mathematically rigorous proof of such correspondence. We address this issue using techniques proper of the algebraic approach to quantum field theories which is known to provide a valuable framework to discuss rigorously the path integral formulation of field theories as well as the solution theory both of ordinary and of partial, stochastic differential equations. In particular, working in this framework, we establish rigorously, albeit at the level of perturbation theory, a correspondence between correlation functions and expectation values computed either in the SDE or in the MSR formalism.

An Algebraic and Microlocal Approach to the Stochastic Non-linear Schrödinger Equation

In a recent work [DDRZ20], it has been developed a novel framework aimed at studying at a perturbative level a large class of non-linear, scalar, real, stochastic PDEs and inspired by the algebraic approach to quantum field theory. The main advantage is the possibility of computing the expectation value and the correlation functions of the underlying solutions accounting for renormalization intrinsically and without resorting to any specific regularization scheme. In this work we prove that it is possible to extend the range of applicability of this framework to cover also the stochastic non-linear Schroedinger equation in which randomness is codified by an additive, Gaussian, complex white noise.

Physical significance of generalized boundary conditions: an Unruh-DeWitt detector viewpoint on $\text{AdS}_2 \times \mathbb{S}^2$

On $\text{AdS}_2 \times \mathbb{S}^2$, we construct the two-point correlation functions for the ground and thermal states of a real Klein-Gordon field admitting generalized $(γ,v)$-boundary conditions. We follow the prescription recently outlined in [1] for two different choices of secondary solutions. For each of them, we obtain a family of admissible boundary conditions parametrized by $γ\in\left[0,\fracπ{2}\right]$. We study how they affect the response of a static Unruh-DeWitt detector. The latter not only perceives variations of $γ$, but also distinguishes between the two families of secondary solutions in a qualitatively different, and rather bizarre, fashion. Our results highlight once more the existence of a freedom in choosing boundary conditions at a timelike boundary which is greater than expected and with a notable associated physical significance.

Hidden freedom in the mode expansion on static spacetimes

We review the construction of ground states focusing on a real scalar field whose dynamics is ruled by the Klein-Gordon equation on a large class of static spacetimes. As in the analysis of the classical equations of motion, when enough isometries are present, via a mode expansion the construction of two-point correlation functions boils down to solving a second order, ordinary differential equation on an interval of the real line. Using the language of Sturm-Liouville theory, most compelling is the scenario when one endpoint of such interval is classified as a limit circle, as it often happens when one is working on globally hyperbolic spacetimes with a timelike boundary. In this case, beyond initial data, one needs to specify a boundary condition both to have a well-defined classical dynamics and to select a corresponding ground state. Here, we take into account boundary conditions of Robin type by using well-known results from Sturm-Liouville theory, but we go beyond the existing literature by exploring an unnoticed freedom that emerges from the intrinsic arbitrariness of secondary solutions at a limit circle endpoint. Accordingly, we show that infinitely many one-parameter families of sensible dynamics are admissible. In other words, we emphasize that physical constraints guaranteeing the construction of full-fledged ground states do not, in general, fix one such state unambiguously. In addition, we provide, in full detail, an example on $(1 + 1)$-half Minkowski spacetime to spell out the rationale in a specific scenario where analytic formulae can be obtained.

Besov Wavefront Set

We develop a notion of wavefront set aimed at characterizing in Fourier space the directions along which a distribution behaves or not as an element of a specific Besov space. Subsequently we prove an alternative, albeit equivalent characterization of such wavefront set using the language of pseudo-differential operators. Both formulations are used to prove the main underlying structural properties. Among these we highlight the individuation of a sufficient criterion to multiply distributions with a prescribed Besov wavefront set which encompasses and generalizes the classical Young's theorem. At last, as an application of this new framework we prove a theorem of propagation of singularities for a large class of hyperbolic operators.
