High redshift cosmography: new results and implication for dark energy

The explanation of the accelerated expansion of the Universe poses one of the most fundamental questions in physics and cosmology today. If the acceleration is driven by some form of dark energy, one can try to constrain the parameters using a cosmographic approach. Our high-redshift analysis allows us to put constraints on the cosmographic expansion up to the fifth order. It is based on the Union2 Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) data set, the Hubble diagram constructed from some Gamma Ray Bursts luminosity distance indicators, and gaussian priors on the distance from the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and the Hubble constant h (these priors have been included in order to help break the degeneracies among model parameters). To perform our statistical analysis and to explore the probability distributions of the cosmographic parameters we use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method (MCMC). We finally investigate implications of our results for the dark energy, in particular, we focus on the parametrization of the dark energy equation of state (EOS). Actually, a possibility to investigate the nature of dark energy lies in measuring the dark energy equation of state, w, and its time (or redshift) dependence at high accuracy. However, since w(z) is not directly accessible to measurement, reconstruction methods are needed to extract it reliably from observations. Here we investigate different models of dark energy, described through several parametrizations of the equation of state, by comparing the cosmographic and the EOS series.

On exact solutions for quintessential (inflationary) cosmological models with exponential potentials

We first study dark energy models with a minimally-coupled scalar field and exponential potentials, admitting exact solutions for the cosmological equations: actually, it turns out that for this class of potentials the Einstein field equations exhibit alternative Lagrangians, and are completely integrable and separable (i.e. it is possible to integrate the system analytically, at least by quadratures). We analyze such solutions, especially discussing when they are compatible with a late time quintessential expansion of the universe. As a further issue, we discuss how such quintessential scalar fields can be connected to the inflationary phase, building up, for this class of potentials, a quintessential inflationary scenario: actually, it turns out that the transition from inflation toward late-time exponential quintessential tail admits a kination period, which is an indispensable ingredient of this kind of theoretical models. All such considerations have also been done by including radiation into the model.

Noether symmetry for Gauss-Bonnet dilatonic gravity

Noether symmetry for Gauss-Bonnet-Dilatonic interaction exists for a constant dilatonic scalar potential and a linear functional dependence of the coupling parameter on the scalar field. The symmetry with the same form of the potential and coupling parameter exists all in the vacuum, radiation and matter dominated era. The late time acceleration is driven by the effective cos- mological constant rather than the Gauss-Bonnet term, while the later compensates for the large value of the effective cosmological constant giving a plausible answer to the well-known coincidence problem.

A matter-dominated cosmological model with variable $G$ and $\Lambda$. Confrontation of theoretical predictions with observational data

In the framework of renormalization-group improved cosmologies, we analyze both theoretically and observationally the exact and general solution of the matter-dominated cosmological equations, using the expression of \Lambda = \Lambda(G) already determined by the integration method employed in a previous paper. A rough comparison between such a model and the concordance \LambdaCDM model as to the magnitude-redshift relationship has been already done, without showing any appreciable differences. We here perform a more refined study of how astrophysical data (Union2 set) on type-I supernovae, gamma ray bursts (in a sample calibrated in a model independent way with the SneIa dataset), and gas fraction in galaxy clusters (using a sample of Chandra measurements of the X-ray gas mass fraction) affect the model and constrain its parameters. We also apply a cosmographic approach to our cosmological model and estimate the cosmographic parameters by fitting both the supernovae and the gamma ray bursts datasets. We show that this matter-dominated cosmological model with variable Newton parameter and variable cosmological term is indeed compatible with the observations above (on type Ia supernovae, the gamma ray bursts Hubble diagram, and the gas mass fraction in X-ray luminous galaxy clusters). The cosmographic approach adopted confirms such conclusions. Finally, it seems possible to include radiation into the model, since numerical integration of the equations derived by the presence of both radiation and matter shows that, after inflation, the total density parameter is initially dominated by the radiation contribution and later by the matter one.

The GRBs Hubble diagram in quintessential cosmological models

It has been recently empirically established that some of the directly observed pa- rameters of GRBs are correlated with their important intrinsic parameters, like the luminosity or the total radiated energy. These correlations were derived, tested and used to standardize GRBs, i.e., to derive their luminosity or radiated energy from one or more observables, in order to construct an estimated fiducial Hubble diagram, assuming that radiation propagates in the standard LambdaCDM cosmological model. We extend these analyses by considering more general models of dark energy, and an updated data set of high redshift GRBs. We show that the correlation parameters only weakly depend on the cosmological model. Moreover we apply a local regression technique to estimate, in a model independent way, the distance modulus from the recently updated SNIa sample containing 307 SNIa (Astier et al. 2006), in order to calibrate the GRBs 2D correlations, considering only GRBs with z <1.4. The derived calibration parameters are used to construct a new GRBs Hubble diagram, which we call the calibrated GRBs HD. We also compare the estimated and calibrated GRBs HDs. It turns out that for the common GRBs they are fully statistically consistent, thus indicating that both of them are not affected by any systematic bias induced by the different standardizing procedures. We finally apply our methods to calibrate 95 long GRBs with the well-known Amati relation and construct the estimated and calibrated GRBs Hubble diagram that extends to redshifts z ~ 8. Even in this case there is consistency between these datasets. This means that the high redshift GRBs can be used to test different models of dark energy. We used the calibrated GRBs HD to constrain our quintessential cosmological model and derived the likelihood values of Omega_m and w(0).

On the transition from complex to real scalar fields in modern cosmology

We study some problems arising from the introduction of a complex scalar field in cosmology, modelling its possible behaviors in both the inflationary and dark energy stages of the universe. Such examples contribute to show that, while the complex nature of the scalar field can be indeed important during inflation, it loses its meaning in the later dark-energy dominated era of cosmology, when the phase of the complex field is practically constant, and there is indeed a transition from complex to real scalar field. In our considerations, the Noether symmetry approach turns out to be a useful tool once again. We arrive eventually at a potential containing the sixth and fourth powers of the scalar field, and the resulting semiclassical quantum cosmology is studied to gain a better understanding of the inflationary stage.

Spherically symmetric ADM gravity with variable G and Lambda(c)

This paper investigates the Arnowitt--Deser--Misner (hereafter ADM) form of spherically symmetric gravity with variable Newton parameter G and cosmological term Lambda(c). The Newton parameter is here treated as a dynamical variable, rather than being merely an external parameter as in previous work on closely related topics. The resulting Hamilton equations are obtained; interestingly, a static solution exists, that reduces to Schwarzschild geometry in the limit of constant G, describing a Newton parameter ruled by a nonlinear differential equation in the radial variable r. A remarkable limiting case is the one for which the Newton parameter obeys an almost linear growth law at large r. An exact solution for G as a function of r is also obtained in the case of vanishing cosmological constant. Some observational implications of these solutions are obtained and briefly discussed.

Noether symmetry approach to scalar-field-dominated cosmology with dynamically evolving G and Lambda

This paper studies the cosmological equations for a scalar field Phi in the framework of a quantum gravity modified Einstein--Hilbert Lagrangian where G and Lambda are dynamical variables. It is possible to show that there exists a Noether symmetry for the point Lagrangian describing this scheme in a FRW universe. Our main result is that the Noether Symmetry Approach fixes both Lambda = Lambda(G) and the potential V = V(Phi) of the scalar field. The method does not lead, however, to easily solvable equations, by virtue of the higher dimensionality of the reduced configuration space involved, the additional variable being the running Newton coupling.

Noether symmetry approach in pure gravity with variable G and Lambda

We find exact cosmological solutions when the Newton parameter and the cosmological term are dynamically evolving in a renormalization-group improved Hamiltonian approach. In our derivation we use the Noether symmetry approach, leading to an interesting variable transformation which yields exact and general integration of the cosmological equations. The functional dependence of Lambda on G is determined by the method itself, therefore generalizing previous results on symmetry principles in cosmology. We find new functional relations between Lambda and G, jointly with power-law inflation for pure gravity.

Noether symmetry approach in matter-dominated cosmology with variable G and Lambda

In the framework of renormalization-group improved cosmologies, we use the Noether symmetry approach to get exact and general integration of the matter-dominated cosmological equations. This is performed by using an expression of Lambda=Lambda(G) determined by the method itself. We also work out a comparison between such a model and the concordance LambdaCDM model as to the magnitude-redshift relationship, hence showing that no appreciable differences occur.

Gauge invariant perturbations of Scalar-Tensor Cosmologies: The vacuum case

The covariant gauge invariant perturbation theory of scalar cosmological perturbations is developed for a general Scalar-Tensor Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmology in a vacuum. The perturbation equations are then solved exactly in the long wavelength limit for a specific coupling, potential and background. Differences with the minimally coupled case are briefly discussed.

Improved Action Functionals in Non-Perturbative Quantum Gravity

Models of gravity with variable G and Lambda have acquired greater relevance after the recent evidence in favour of the Einstein theory being non-perturbatively renormalizable in the Weinberg sense. The present paper builds a modified Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) action functional for such models which leads to a power-law growth of the scale factor for pure gravity and for a massless phi**4 theory in a Universe with Robertson-Walker symmetry, in agreement with the recently developed fixed-point cosmology. Interestingly, the renormalization-group flow at the fixed point is found to be compatible with a Lagrangian description of the running quantities G and Lambda.

Variable G and $Λ$: scalar-tensor versus RG-improved cosmology

We study the consequences due to time varying $G$ and $Λ$ in scalar-tensor theories of gravity for cosmology, inspired by the modifications introduced by the Renormalization Group (RG) equations in the Quantum Einstein Gravity. We assume a power-law scale factor in presence contemporarily of both the scalar field and the matter components of the cosmic fluid, and analyze a special case and its generalization, also showing the possibility of a phantom cosmology. In both such situations we find a negative kinetic term for the scalar field $Q$ and, possibly, an equation-of-state parameter $w_Q<-1$. A violation of dominant energy condition (DEC) for $Q$ is also possible in both of them; but, while in the first special case the $Q$-energy density then remains positive, in the second one we find it negative.

Arnowitt-Deser-Misner gravity with variable G and Lambda and fixed point cosmologies from the renormalization group

Models of gravity with variable G and Lambda have acquired greater relevance after the recent evidence in favour of the Einstein theory being nonperturbatively renormalizable in the Weinberg sense. The present paper applies the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism to such a class of gravitational models. Are modified action functional is then built which reduces to the Einstein-Hilbert action when G is constant, and leads to a power-law growth of the scale factor for pure gravity and for a massless Phi**4 theory in a Universe with Robertson-Walker symmetry, in agreement with the recently developed fixed-point cosmology. Interestingly, the renormalization-group flow at the fixed point is found to be compatible with a Lagrangian description of the running quantities G and Lambda.

The peculiar velocity field in a quintessence model

We investigate the evolution of matter density perturbations and some properties of the peculiar velocity field for a special class of exponential potentials in a scalar field model for quintessence, for which a general exact solution is known. The data from the 2-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) suggest a value of the today pressureless matter density Omega_M0 = 0.18 +- 0.05.

Scaling Solutions and reconstruction of Scalar Field Potentials

Starting from the hypothesis of scaling solutions, the general exact form of the scalar field potential is found. In the case of two fluids, it turns out to be a negative power of hyperbolic sine. In the case of three fluids the analytic form is not found, but is obtained by quadratures.

Noether symmetries in Bianchi universes

We use our Nöther Symmetry Approach to study the Einstein equations minimally coupled with a scalar field, in the case of Bianchi universes of class A and B. Possible cases, when such symmetries exist, are found and two examples of exact integration of the equations of motion are given in the cases of Bianchi AI and BV.
