Multilayered fluid-structure interactions: existence of weak solutions for time-periodic and initial-value problems

We establish the existence of weak solutions for a class of fully coupled multilayered fluid-structure interaction systems in a three-dimensional spatial setting. The model consists of an incompressible viscous fluid interacting with a thin elastic shell, which is in turn coupled to a three-dimensional elastic solid, yielding a nonstandard $3D/2D/3D$ coupling configuration. The system is driven by time-periodic boundary forcing through Bernoulli-type pressure conditions. For sufficiently small forcing in $L^2$, we prove the existence of at least one time-periodic weak solution. A central analytical difficulty stems from the strong nonlinear coupling across interfaces of different dimensionality and the absence of classical compactness mechanisms. This challenge is overcome through a carefully designed energy framework combined with and new $L^{2}$ compactness arguments adapted to the multilayered geometry. A key structural assumption is the viscoelasticity of the three-dimensional solid, which yields additional diffusion estimates and ensures energy stability. In the purely elastic case, we establish the global-in-time existence of weak solutions to the corresponding initial-value problem, provided that no degeneration (self-contact) of the fluid domain occurs. These results extend existing theories for two-dimensional and reduced-dimensional configurations to a genuinely three-dimensional multilayered setting, providing new analytical insight into complex coupled PDE systems arising in fluid-structure interaction.

Time-periodic solutions for viscous fluids interacting with nonlinear Koiter plates

We prove the existence of time-periodic weak solutions for a fluid-structure interaction system coupling the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a three-dimensional moving domain with a nonlinear Koiter plate equation on its upper boundary. The lateral boundary is space-periodic, a natural setting for flow in pipes and channels of periodic cross-section driven by a time-periodic pressure gradient, and the fluid satisfies a no-slip coupling condition at the moving interface. The elastic energy of the plate is governed by the nonlinear Koiter model, which yields an $H^2$-coercive operator and accounts for both membrane and bending effects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first result on time-periodic weak solutions for a fluid-structure interaction system with a \emph{nonlinear} elastic energy. The main novelty, compared to our earlier works on the linear case -- a linear elastic plate and a linear Koiter shell respectively -- is the replacement of a two-stage fixed-point procedure -- a Leray-Schauder argument at the discrete level followed by a set-valued Kakutani-Glicksberg-Fan argument at the continuous level -- by a \emph{single} Leray-Schauder fixed point applied directly to the fully coupled Galerkin system. This reduction is not merely a simplification: the nonlinearity of the Koiter energy destroys the convexity of the solution map on which Kakutani-Fan relies, making the two-stage approach of~\cite{Claudiu22} unavailable and the single fixed point the only viable strategy.

Strong time-periodic solutions for a multilayered fluid-structure interaction system with nonlinear coupling

We investigate a time-periodic fully three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction system in which the Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible viscous fluid are coupled with a multilayered elastic structure composed of a damped thin linear plate and a thick viscoelastic layer. The coupling is nonlinear, meaning that it is on a moving interface that is not known a priori, rendering the problem a moving-domain problem. We prove the existence of strong time-periodic solutions. The proof relies on a fixed point argument, combining sharp nonlinear estimates with a detailed analysis of the linearized system. The linearized problem is analyzed by employing the Arendt-Bu theorem on maximal periodic $\mathrm{L}^p$-regularity, which requires several new analytical ingredients including a refined lifting procedure, a decoupling strategy establishing $\mathcal{R}$-sectoriality of the coupled operator, a careful treatment of the thick structural layer, and a spectral analysis adapted to the multilayered setting. This provides the first strong time-periodic existence result for multilayered fluid-structure interaction systems, and the methods are expended to extend more broadly to nonlinear coupled PDEs on moving domains with periodic forcing.

Existence of weak solutions for incompressible fluid-Koiter shell interactions with Navier slip boundary condition

We study a three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction problem describing the motion of an incompressible, viscous fluid coupled with a deformable elastic shell of Koiter type that forms part of the fluid boundary. The fluid motion is governed by the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations posed on a time-dependent domain, while the shell evolution is described by a nonlinear elastic model. At the fluid-structure interface, we impose Navier slip boundary conditions, allowing for tangential slip penalized by friction. Our main result establishes the global-in-time existence of weak solutions up to the first possible self-intersection of the shell, for arbitrarily large initial data with finite energy. The analysis is carried out in a fully three-dimensional setting and addresses the major mathematical challenges arising from the moving domain, the geometric nonlinearity of the shell, and the reduced regularization induced by the slip boundary condition. The proof relies on a careful construction of suitable approximation schemes, novel compactness arguments adapted to the slip framework, and a new extension operator for divergence-free test functions compatible with the fluid-shell coupling. As a further contribution, we provide a direct approach to the strong convergence of second-order spatial derivatives of the shell displacement, which allows us to treat nonlinear Koiter shell models within the same framework.

Time-periodic weak solutions for the interaction of an incompressible fluid with a linear Koiter type shell under dynamic pressure boundary conditions

In many occurrences of fluid-structure interaction time-periodic motions are observed. We consider the interaction between a fluid driven by the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equation and a two dimensional linearized elastic Koiter shell situated at the boundary. The fluid-domain is a part of the solution and as such changing in time periodically. On a steady part of the boundary we allow for the physically relevant case of dynamic pressure boundary values, prominent to model inflow/outflow. We provide the existence of at least one weak time-periodic solution for given periodic external forces that are not too large. For that we introduce new approximation techniques and a-priori estimates.

Time-periodic weak solutions for an incompressible Newtonian fluid interacting with an elastic plate

Under the action of a time-periodic external forces we prove the existence of at least one time-periodic weak solution for the interaction between a three-dimensional incompressible fluid, governed by the Navier- Stokes equation and a two dimensional elastic plate. The challenge is that the Eulerian domain for the fluid changes in time and is a part of the solution. We introduce a two fixed-point methodology: First we construct a time-periodic solutions for a given variable time-periodic geometry. Then in a second step a (set-valued) fixed point is performed w.r.t.\ the geometry of the domain. The existence relies on newly developed a-priori estimates applicable for both coupled and uncoupled variable geometries. Due to the expected weak regularity of the solutions such Eulerian estimates are unavoidable. Note in particular, that only the fluid is assumed to be dissipative. But the here produced a-priori estimates show that its possible to exploit the dissipative effects of the fluid also for the solid deformation. The existence of periodic solutions for a given geometry is valid for arbitrary large data. The existence of periodic coupled solutions to the fluid-structure interaction is valid for all data that excludes a self-intersection a-priori.

Existence of steady very weak solutions to Navier-Stokes equations with non-Newtonian stress tensors

We provide existence of very weak solutions and new a-priori estimates for steady flows of non-Newtonian fluids when the right-hand sides are not in the natural existence class. To obtain the a-priori estimates we make use of a newly developed solenoidal Lipschitz truncation that preserves zero boundary values. We provide also estimates in (Muckenhoupt) weighted spaces which permit us to regain a duality pairing. Our estimates are valid even in the presence of the convective term. They are obtained via a newly developed comparison method that allows to "cut out" the singularities of the right hand side such that the skew symmetry of the convective term can be used for large parts of the right hand side.
