Motion of test particles in a regular black hole space--time

We consider the motion of test particles in the regular black hole space-time given by Ayón-Beato and Garc\'ıa in Phys. Rev. Lett. 80:5056 (1998). The complete set of orbits for neutral and weakly charged test particles is discussed, including for neutral particles the extreme and over-extreme metric. We also derive the analytical solutions for the equation of motion of neutral test particles in a parametric form and consider a post-Schwarzschild expansion of the periastron shift to second order in the charge.

Isofrequency pairing of spinning particles in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime

It has been established in Schwarzschild spacetime (and more generally in Kerr spacetime) that pairs of geometrically different timelike geodesics with the same radial and azimuthal frequencies exist in the strong field regime. The occurrence of this socalled isofrequency pairing is of relevance in view of gravitational-wave observations. In this paper we generalize the results on isofrequency pairing in two directions. Firstly, we allow for a (positive) cosmological constant, i.e., we replace the Schwarzschild spacetime with the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. Secondly, we consider not only spinless test-particles (i.e., timelike geodesics) but also test-particles with spin. In the latter case we restrict to the case that the motion is in the equatorial plane with the spin perpendicular to this plane. We find that the cosmological constant as well as the spin have distinct impacts on the description of bound motion in the frequency domain.

Photon Regions and Shadows of Accelerated Black Holes

In an earlier paper we have analytically determined the photon regions and the shadows of black holes of the Plebański class of metrics which are also known as the Kerr--Newman--NUT--(anti-)deSitter metrics. These metrics are characterized by six parameters: mass, spin, electric and magnetic charge, gravitomagnetic NUT charge, and the cosmological constant. Here we extend this analysis to the Plebański--Demiański class of metrics which contains, in addition to these six parameters, the so-called acceleration parameter. All these metrics are axially symmetric and stationary type D solutions to the Einstein--Maxwell equations with a cosmological constant. We derive analytical formulas for the photon regions (i.e., for the regions that contain spherical lightlike geodesics) and for the boundary curve of the shadow as it is seen by an observer at Boyer--Lindquist coordinates $(r_O, \vartheta _O)$ in the domain of outer communication. Whereas all relevant formulas are derived for the whole Plebański--Demiański class, we concentrate on the accelerated Kerr metric (i.e., only mass, spin and acceleration parameter are different from zero) when discussing the influence of the acceleration parameter on the photon region and on the shadow in terms of pictures. The accelerated Kerr metric is also known as the rotating $C$-metric. We discuss how our analytical formulas can be used for calculating the horizontal and vertical angular diameters of the shadow and we estimate these values for the black holes at the center of our Galaxy and at the center of M87.

Macroscopic quantum resonators (MAQRO): 2015 Update

Do the laws of quantum physics still hold for macroscopic objects - this is at the heart of Schrödinger's cat paradox - or do gravitation or yet unknown effects set a limit for massive particles? What is the fundamental relation between quantum physics and gravity? Ground-based experiments addressing these questions may soon face limitations due to limited free-fall times and the quality of vacuum and microgravity. The proposed mission MAQRO may overcome these limitations and allow addressing those fundamental questions. MAQRO harnesses recent developments in quantum optomechanics, high-mass matter-wave interferometry as well as state-of-the-art space technology to push macroscopic quantum experiments towards their ultimate performance limits and to open new horizons for applying quantum technology in space. The main scientific goal of MAQRO is to probe the vastly unexplored "quantum-classical" transition for increasingly massive objects, testing the predictions of quantum theory for truly macroscopic objects in a size and mass regime unachievable in ground-based experiments. The hardware for the mission will largely be based on available space technology. Here, we present the MAQRO proposal submitted in response to the (M4) Cosmic Vision call of the European Space Agency for a medium-size mission opportunity with a possible launch in 2025.

Testing Gravity with Pulsars in the SKA Era

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will use pulsars to enable precise measurements of strong gravity effects in pulsar systems, which yield tests of gravitational theories that cannot be carried out anywhere else. The Galactic census of pulsars will discover dozens of relativistic pulsar systems, possibly including pulsar -- black hole binaries which can be used to test the "cosmic censorship conjecture" and the "no-hair theorem". Also, the SKA's remarkable sensitivity will vastly improve the timing precision of millisecond pulsars, allowing probes of potential deviations from general relativity (GR). Aspects of gravitation to be explored include tests of strong equivalence principles, gravitational dipole radiation, extra field components of gravitation, gravitomagnetism, and spacetime symmetries.

Finsler-type modification of the Coulomb law

Finsler geometry is a natural generalization of pseudo-Riemannian geometry. It can be motivated e.g. by a modified version of the Ehlers-Pirani-Schild axiomatic approach to space-time theory. Also, some scenarios of quantum gravity suggest a modified dispersion relation which could be phrased in terms of Finsler geometry. On a Finslerian spacetime, the Universality of Free Fall is still satisfied but Local Lorentz Invariance is violated in a way not covered by standard Lorentz Invariance Violation schemes. In this paper we consider a Finslerian modification of Maxwell's equations. The corrections to the Coulomb potential and to the hydrogen energy levels are computed. We find that the Finsler metric corrections yield a splitting of the energy levels. Experimental data provide bounds for the Finsler parameters.

Motion of spinning test bodies in Kerr spacetime

We investigate the motion of spinning test bodies in General Relativity. By means of a multipolar approximation method for extended test bodies we derive the equations of motion, and classify the orbital motion of pole-dipole test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Kerr geometry. An exact expression for the periastron shift of a spinning test body is given. Implications of test body spin corrections are studied and compared with the results obtained by means of other approximation schemes.

Generalized gravitomagnetic clock effect

In General Relativity, the rotation of a gravitating body like the Earth influences the motion of orbiting test particles or satellites in a non-Newtonian way. This causes, e.g., a precession of the orbital plane known as the Lense-Thirring effect and a precession of the spin of a gyroscope known as the Schiff effect. Here, we discuss a third effect first introduced by Cohen and Mashhoon called the gravitomagnetic clock effect. It describes the difference in proper time of counterrevolving clocks after a revolution of $2π$. For two clocks on counterrotating equatorial circular orbits around the Earth, the effect is about $10^{-7}$ seconds per revolution, which is quite large. We introduce a general relativistic definition of the gravitomagnetic clock effect which is valid for arbitrary pairs of orbits. This includes rotations in the same direction and different initial conditions, which are crucial if the effect can be detected with existing satellites or with payloads on nondedicated missions. We also derive the post-Newtonian expansion of the general relativistic expression and calculate the effect for the example of a satellite of a Global Navigation Satellite System compared to a geostationary satellite.

Photon Regions and Shadows of Kerr-Newman-NUT Black Holes with a Cosmological Constant

We consider the Plebański class of electrovacuum solutions to the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant. These space-times, which are also known as the Kerr-Newman-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter space-times, are characterized by a mass $m$, a spin $a$, a parameter $β$ that comprises electric and magnetic charge, a NUT parameter $\ell$ and a cosmological constant $Λ$. Based on a detailed discussion of the photon regions in these space-times (i.e., of the regions in which spherical lightlike geodesics exist), we derive an analytical formula for the shadow of a Kerr-Newman-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter black hole, for an observer at given Boyer-Lindquist coordinates $(r_O, \vartheta_O)$ in the domain of outer communication. We visualize the photon regions and the shadows for various values of the parameters.

Exact solution for a binary system of unequal counter-rotating black holes

A complete solution describing a binary system constituted by two unequal counter-rotating black holes with a massless strut inbetween is presented. It is expressed in terms of four arbitrary parameters: the half length of the two rods representing the black hole horizons sigma1 and sigma2, the total mass M, and the relative distance R between the centers of the horizons. The explicit form of this solution in terms of physical parameters, i.e., the Komar masses M1 and M2, the Komar angular momenta per unit mass a1 and a2, having a1 and a2 opposite signs, and the coordinate distance R, led us to a 4-parameter subclass of solutions in which a set of five physical parameters satisfy a simple algebraic relation. Moreover, the interaction force, provided by the strut, between the black holes results to be of same form as it is for the static double-Schwarzschild case.

Opposite charged two-body system of identical counter-rotating black holes

A 4-parametric exact solution describing a two-body system of identical Kerr-Newman counter-rotating black holes endowed with opposite electric/magnetic charges is presented. The axis conditions are solved in order to really describe two black holes separated by a massless strut. Moreover, the explicit form of the horizon half length parameter sigma in terms of physical Komar parameters, i.e., the Komar mass M, electric charge QE, angular momentum J, and a coordinate distance R is derived. Additionally, magnetic charges QB arise from the rotation of electrically charged black holes. As a consequence, in order to account for the contribution to the mass of the magnetic charge, the usual Smarr mass formula should be generalized, as it is proposed by A. Tomimatsu, Prog. Theor. Phys. 72, 73 (1984).

Generalized black diholes

A 5-parametric exact solution, describing a binary system composed of identical counter-rotating black holes endowed with opposite electromagnetic charges, is constructed. The addition of the angular momentum parameter to the static Emparan-Teo dihole model introduces magnetic charges into this two-body system. The solution can be considered as an extended model for describing generalized black diholes as dyons. We derive the explicit functional form of the horizon half-length parameter $σ$ as a function of the Komar parameters: Komar mass $M$, electric/magnetic charge $Q_{E }/ Q_{B}$, angular momentum $J$, and a coordinate distance $R$, where the parameters $(M, J, Q_E, Q_B, R)$ characterize the upper constituent of the system, while $(M, -J, -Q_E, -Q_B, R)$ are associated with the lower one. The addition of magnetic charges enhances the standard Smarr mass formula in order to take into account their contribution to the mass. The solution contains, as particular cases, two solutions already discussed in the literature.

Dynamics of test particles in the general five-dimensional Myers-Perry spacetime

We present the complete set of analytical solutions of the geodesic equation in the general five-dimensional Myers-Perry spacetime in terms of the Weierstrass $\wp$-, $ζ$- and $σ$-functions. We analyze the underlying polynomials in the polar and radial equations, which depend on the parameters of the metric and the conserved quantities of a test particle, and characterize the motion by their zeros. We exemplify the efficiency of the analytical method on the basis of the explicit construction of test particle orbits and by addressing observables in this spacetime.

Exact solution for two unequal counter-rotating black holes

The complete solution for two unequal counter-rotating black holes separated by a massless strut, is developed in terms of four arbitrary parameters involving two quantities σ1 and σ2 as the half length of the two rods representing the black hole horizons, the total mass M and the relative distance R between the centers of the horizons. A further attempt for describing the explicit form of this solution in terms of the physical parameters: The two Komar masses M1 and M2, Komar angular momenta per unit mass a1 and a2 (a1 and a2 have opposite sign), and the coordinate distance R, guided us to a 4-parameter subclass in which the five physical parameters satisfy a simple algebraic relation and the interaction force in this scheme looks like Schwarzschild type.

Energy eigenfunctions of the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation

We developed a new and powerful algorithm by which numerical solutions for excited states in a gravito optical surface trap have been obtained. They represent solutions in the regime of strong nonlinearities of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation. In this context we also shortly review several approaches which allow, in principle, for calculating excited state solutions. It turns out that without modifications these are not applicable to strongly nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The importance of studying excited states of Bose-Einstein condensates is also underlined by a recent experiment of Bücker et al in which vibrational state inversion of a Bose-Einstein condensate has been achieved by transferring the entire population of the condensate to the first excited state. Here, we focus on demonstrating the applicability of our algorithm for three different potentials by means of numerical results for the energy eigenstates and eigenvalues of the 1D Grosss-Pitaevskii-equation. We compare the numerically found solutions and find out that they completely agree with the case of known analytical solutions.

Geodesic Motion in the Singly Spinning Black Ring Spacetime

We present analytical solutions of the geodesic equations of test particles and light in the five dimensional singly spinning black ring spacetime for special cases, since it does not appear possible to separate the Hamilton-Jacobi-equation for singly spinning black rings in general. Based on the study of the polynomials in the equations of motion we characterize the motion of test particles and light and discuss the associated orbits.

OSS (Outer Solar System): A fundamental and planetary physics mission to Neptune, Triton and the Kuiper Belt

The present OSS mission continues a long and bright tradition by associating the communities of fundamental physics and planetary sciences in a single mission with ambitious goals in both domains. OSS is an M-class mission to explore the Neptune system almost half a century after flyby of the Voyager 2 spacecraft. Several discoveries were made by Voyager 2, including the Great Dark Spot (which has now disappeared) and Triton's geysers. Voyager 2 revealed the dynamics of Neptune's atmosphere and found four rings and evidence of ring arcs above Neptune. Benefiting from a greatly improved instrumentation, it will result in a striking advance in the study of the farthest planet of the Solar System. Furthermore, OSS will provide a unique opportunity to visit a selected Kuiper Belt object subsequent to the passage of the Neptunian system. It will consolidate the hypothesis of the origin of Triton as a KBO captured by Neptune, and improve our knowledge on the formation of the Solar system. The probe will embark instruments allowing precise tracking of the probe during cruise. It allows to perform the best controlled experiment for testing, in deep space, the General Relativity, on which is based all the models of Solar system formation. OSS is proposed as an international cooperation between ESA and NASA, giving the capability for ESA to launch an M-class mission towards the farthest planet of the Solar system, and to a Kuiper Belt object. The proposed mission profile would allow to deliver a 500 kg class spacecraft. The design of the probe is mainly constrained by the deep space gravity test in order to minimise the perturbation of the accelerometer measurement.

Observables for bound orbital motion in axially symmetric space-times

The periastron shift and the Lense-Thirring effect of bound orbital motion in a general axially symmetric space-time given by Plebański and Demiański are analyzed. We also define a measure for the conicity of the orbit and give analytic expressions for all three observables in terms of hyperelliptic integrals and Lauricella's $F_D$ function. For an interpretation of these analytical expressions, we perform a post-Schwarzschild and a post-Newton expansion of these quantities. This clearly shows the influence of the different space-time parameters on the considered observables and allows to characterize Kerr, Taub-NUT, Schwarzschild-de Sitter, or other space-times.
