A Hypothesis for the Speed of Propagation of Light in electric and magnetic fields and the Planning of an Experiment for its Verification

As generally known, the speed of propagation of light in solid state bodies can be different from the speed of light in vacuum. That the mere presence of electric or magnetic fields in the vacuum can suffice to influence the speed of light, is a hypothesis under discussion, which is based on considerations of Quantumelectrodynamics. For a verification of this hypothesis, an interference-experiment might be performed, of which the planning is given in this article.

Two Paradoxes of the Existence of electric Charge

Electromagnetic waves propagate with the speed of light. The reason is that electrostatic fields as well as magnetic fields propagate with this speed. Both types of objects, waves as well as static fields contain and transport energy. Consequently it is possible to calculate how much energy and how much energy density a source of a field emits into the space - and the calculation shows that this energy is not zero, for elementary particles as well as for macroscopic spheres. The calculation is presented in this article. This leads to a principle problem not being answered up to now: From where does the static charge obtain the energy, which it emits permantently? But the paradox has a second aspect: If we follow the trace of a specified element of volume containing an electric field on its way through the space, we will notice that its contents of field energy decreases during time. But where does this effluent energy go?

A step towards the Analysis of the Influence of an electrical Field on the Propagation of Light

It is a matter of common knowledge that the field of gravitation influences the propagation of light, but the question to which extent electromagnetic fields do something similar is not completely answered. The birefringence caused by electric and magnetic fields is subject of several articles in Quantumelectrodynamics, but the absolute refractive index is discussed rather rarely. Some hypothetical considerations about the feasibility of an experiment to analyze the refractive index in electromagnetic fields were given in a former article by the same author. A first experimental test is reported now. Perhaps an evidence for an influence of an electric field on the refractive index was found, but the result is not reliable enough to claim already, that the influence was seen - but it should encourage to perform further measurements with different methods of higher precision.

An easy way to Gravimagnetism

One of the numerous results of the Theory of General Relativity is the appearance of Gravimagnetism, described already by Thirring and Lense in 1918 [THI 18]. Its understanding normally remains reserved to specialists. This article presents a simple classical analogy to bring the description of Gravimagnetism within the reach of beginners. The article describes a classical model calculation on the level of undergraduate students and mentions the situation of the modern experiment.

Does Cosmological Vacuum Energy Density have an Electric Reason ?

Rather uncomplicated calculations by hand display a surprising connection between the energy density of the vacuum and the diameter and age of the universe. Among other things, the result explains the observation of the accelerated expansion of the universe.
