Non-Local Tug-of-War and the Infinity Fractional Laplacian

Motivated by the "tug-of-war" game studied in [12], we consider a "non-local" version of the game which goes as follows: at every step two players pick respectively a direction and then, instead of flipping a coin in order to decide which direction to choose and then moving of a fixed amount $ε>0$ (as is done in the classical case), it is a $s$-stable Levy process which chooses at the same time both the direction and the distance to travel. Starting from this game, we heuristically we derive a deterministic non-local integro-differential equation that we call "infinity fractional Laplacian". We study existence, uniqueness, and regularity, both for the Dirichlet problem and for a double obstacle problem, both problems having a natural interpretation as "tug-of-war" games.

On the Decay of Infinite Energy Solutions to the Navier-Stokes Equations in the Plane

Infinite energy solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$ may be constructed by decomposing the initial data into a finite energy piece and an infinite energy piece, which are then treated separately. We prove that the finite energy part of such solutions is bounded for all time and decays algebraically in time when the same can be said of heat energy starting from the same data. As a consequence, we describe the asymptotic behavior of the infinite energy solutions. Specifically, we consider the solutions of Gallagher and Planchon [5] as well as solutions constructed from a "radial energy decomposition". Our proof uses the Fourier Splitting technique of M. E. Schonbek.

The Vortex-Wave equation with a single vortex as the limit of the Euler equation

In this article we consider the physical justification of the Vortex-Wave equation introduced by Marchioro and Pulvirenti in the case of a single point vortex moving in an ambient vorticity. We consider a sequence of solutions for the Euler equation in the plane corresponding to initial data consisting of an ambient vorticity in $L^1\cap L^\infty$ and a sequence of concentrated blobs which approach the Dirac distribution. We introduce a notion of a weak solution of the Vortex-Wave equation in terms of velocity (or primitive variables) and then show, for a subsequence of the blobs, the solutions of the Euler equation converge in velocity to a weak solution of the Vortex-Wave equation.

Existence and Stability of Steady-State Solutions with Finite Energy for the Navier-Stokes equation in the Whole Space

We consider the steady-state Navier-Stokes equation in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^3$ driven by a forcing function $f$. The class of source functions $f$ under consideration yield the existence of at least one solution with finite Dirichlet integral ($\|\nabla U\|_2<\infty$). Under the additional assumptions that $f$ is absent of low modes and the ratio of $f$ to viscosity is sufficiently small in a natural norm we construct solutions which have finite energy (finite $L^2$ norm). These solutions are unique among all solutions with finite energy and finite Dirichlet integral. The constructed solutions are also shown to be stable in the following sense: If $U$ is such a solution then any viscous, incompressible flow in the whole space, driven by $f$ and starting with finite energy, will return to $U$.

On Questions of Decay and Existence for the Viscous Camassa-Holm Equations

We consider the viscous $n$-dimensional Camassa-Holm equations, with $n=2,3,4$ in the whole space. We establish existence and regularity of the solutions and study the large time behavior of the solutions in several Sobolev spaces. We first show that if the data is only in $L^2$ then the solution decays without a rate and that this is the best that can be expected for data in $L^2$. For solutions with data in $H^m\cap L^1$ we obtain decay at an algebraic rate which is optimal in the sense that it coincides with the rate of the underlying linear part.

Poincaré's inequality and diffusive evolution equations

This paper addresses the question of change of decay rate from exponential to algebraic for diffusive evolution equations. We show how the behaviour of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in the two cases yields the passage from exponential decay in bounded domains to algebraic decay or no decay at all in the case of unbounded domains. It is well known that such rates of decay exist: the purpose of this paper is to explain what makes the change in decay happen. We also discuss what kind of data is needed to obtain various decay rates.

Decay Asymptotics of the Viscous Camassa-Holm Equations in the Plane

We consider the vorticity formulation of the 2-D viscous Camassa-Holm equations in the whole space. We establish global existence for solutions corresponding to initial data in $L^1$ and describe the large time behavior of solutions with sufficiently small and localized initial data. We calculate the rate at which such solutions approach an ``un-filtered'' Oseen vortex by computing the rate at which the solution of a scaled vorticity problem approaches the solution to a corresponding linearized equation.
