A dynamical pairing between two rational maps

Given two rational maps $φ$ and $ψ$ on $\PP^1$ of degree at least two, we study a symmetric, nonnegative-real-valued pairing $<φ,ψ>$ which is closely related to the canonical height functions $h_φ$ and $h_ψ$ associated to these maps. Our main results show a strong connection between the value of $<φ,ψ>$ and the canonical heights of points which are small with respect to at least one of the two maps $φ$ and $ψ$. Several necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the vanishing of $<φ,ψ>$. We give an explicit upper bound on the difference between the canonical height $h_ψ$ and the standard height $h_\st$ in terms of $<σ,ψ>$, where $σ(x)=x^2$ denotes the squaring map. The pairing $<σ,ψ>$ is computed or approximated for several families of rational maps $ψ$.

Non-archimedean equidistribution on elliptic curves with global applications

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over an algebraically closed, complete, non-archimedean field $K$, and let ${\mathsf E}$ denote the Berkovich analytic space associated to $E/K$. We study the $μ$-equidistribution of finite subsets of $E(K)$, where $μ$ is a certain canonical unit Borel measure on ${\mathsf E}$. Our main result is an inequality bounding the error term when testing against a certain class of continuous functions on ${\mathsf E}$. We then give two applications to elliptic curves over global function fields: we prove a function field analogue of the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang equidistribution theorem for small points, and a function field analogue of a result of Baker-Ih-Rumely on the finiteness of $S$-integral torsion points. Both applications are given in explicit quantitative form.

Isotriviality is equivalent to potential good reduction for endomorphisms of ${\mathbb P}^N$ over function fields

Let $K=k(C)$ be the function field of a complete nonsingular curve $C$ over an arbitrary field $k$. The main result of this paper states that a morphism $ϕ:{\mathbb P}^N_K\to{\mathbb P}^N_K$ is isotrivial if and only if it has potential good reduction at all places $v$ of $K$; this generalizes results of Benedetto for polynomial maps on ${\mathbb P}^1_K$ and Baker for arbitrary rational maps on ${\mathbb P}^1_K$. We offer two proofs: the first uses algebraic geometry and geometric invariant theory, and it is new even in the case N=1. The second proof uses non-archimedean analysis and dynamics, and it more directly generalizes the proofs of Benedetto and Baker. We will also give two applications. The first states that an endomorphism of ${\mathbb P}^N_K$ of degree at least two is isotrivial if and only if it has an isotrivial iterate. The second gives a dynamical criterion for whether (after base change) a locally free coherent sheaf ${\mathcal E}$ of rank $N+1$ on $C$ decomposes as a direct sum ${\mathcal L}\oplus...\oplus{\mathcal L}$ of $N+1$ copies of the same invertible sheaf ${\mathcal L}$.

S-integral preperiodic points for dynamical systems over number fields

Given a rational map $ϕ: {\mathbb P}^1\to {\mathbb P}^1$ defined over a number field $K$, we prove a finiteness result for $ϕ$-preperiodic points which are $S$-integral with respect to a non-preperiodic point $P$, provided $P$ satisfies a certain local condition at each place. This verifies a special case of a conjecture of S. Ih.

Small rational points on elliptic curves over number fields

Let E/k be an elliptic curve over a number field. We obtain some quantitative refinements of results of Hindry-Silverman, giving an upper bound for the number of k-rational torsion points, and a lower bound for the canonical height of non-torsion k-rational points, in terms of expressions depending explicitly on the degree of k and the Szpiro ratio of E/k. The bounds exhibit only polynomial dependence on both quantities.

Global discrepancy and small points on elliptic curves

Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field k. In this paper, we define the ``global discrepancy'' of a finite set Z of algebraic points on E which in a precise sense measures how far the set is from being adelically equidistributed. We then prove an upper bound for the global discrepancy of Z in terms of the average canonical height of points in Z. We deduce from this inequality a number of consequences. For example, we give a new and simple proof of the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang equidistribution theorem for elliptic curves. We also prove a non-archimedean version of the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang theorem which takes place on the Berkovich analytic space associated to E. We then prove some quantitative `non-equidistribution' theorems for totally real or totally p-adic small points. The results for totally real points imply similar bounds for points defined over the maximal cyclotomic extension of a totally real field.
