Inextendibility of spacetimes and Lorentzian length spaces

We study the low-regularity (in-)extendibility of spacetimes within the synthetic-geometric framework of Lorentzian length spaces developed in [KS:17]. To this end, we introduce appropriate notions of geodesics and timelike geodesic completeness and prove a general inextendibility result. Our results shed new light on recent analytic work in this direction and, for the first time, relate low-regularity inextendibility to (synthetic) curvature blow-up.

The future is not always open

We demonstrate the breakdown of several fundamentals of Lorentzian causality theory in low regularity. Most notably, chronological futures (defined naturally using locally Lipschitz curves) may be non-open, and may differ from the corresponding sets defined via piecewise $C^1$-curves. By refining the notion of a causal bubble from [CG:12],we characterize spacetimes for which such phenomena can occur, and also relate these to the possibility of deforming causal curves of positive length into timelike curves (push-up). The phenomena described here are, in particular, relevant for recent synthetic approaches to low regularity Lorentzian geometry where, in the absence of a differentiable structure, causality has to be based on locally Lipschitz curves.

Cut-and-paste for impulsive gravitational waves with $Λ$: The geometric picture

Impulsive gravitational waves in Minkowski space were introduced by Roger Penrose at the end of the 1960s, and have been widely studied over the decades. Here we focus on non-expanding waves which later have been generalised to impulses travelling in all constant-curvature backgrounds, that is also the (anti-)de Sitter universe. While Penrose's original construction was based on his vivid geometric `scissors-and-paste' approach in a flat background, until now a comparably powerful visualisation and understanding have been missing in the ${Λ\not=0}$ case. In this work we provide such a picture: The (anti-)de Sitter hyperboloid is cut along the null wave surface, and the `halves' are then re-attached with a suitable shift of their null generators across the wave surface. This special family of global null geodesics defines an appropriate comoving coordinate system, leading to the continuous form of the metric. Moreover, it provides a complete understanding of the nature of the Penrose junction conditions and their specific form. These findings shed light on recent discussions of the memory effect in impulsive waves.

On geodesics in low regularity

We consider geodesics in both Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds with metrics of low regularity. We discuss existence of extremal curves for continuous metrics and present several old and new examples that highlight their subtle interrelation with solutions of the geodesic equations. Then we turn to the initial value problem for geodesics for locally Lipschitz continuous metrics and generalize recent results on existence, regularity and uniqueness of solutions in the sense of Filippov.

Geodesics in nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves with $Λ$, II

We investigate all geodesics in the entire class of nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves propagating in an (anti-)de Sitter universe using the distributional metric. We extend the regularization approach of part I, [SSLP16] to a full nonlinear distributional analysis within the geometric theory of generalized functions. We prove global existence and uniqueness of geodesics that cross the impulsive wave and hence geodesic completeness in full generality for this class of low regularity spacetimes. This, in particular, prepares the ground for a mathematically rigorous account on the 'physical equivalence' of the continuous with the distributional `from' of the metric.

Penrose junction conditions extended: impulsive waves with gyratons

We generalize the classical junction conditions for constructing impulsive gravitational waves by the Penrose "cut and paste" method. Specifically, we study nonexpanding impulses which propagate in spaces of constant curvature with any value of the cosmological constant (that is Minkowski, de Sitter, or anti-de Sitter universes) when additional off-diagonal metric components are present. Such components encode a possible angular momentum of the ultra-relativistic source of the impulsive wave - the so called gyraton. We explicitly derive and analyze a specific transformation that relates the distributional form of the metric to a new form which is (Lipschitz) continuous. Such a transformation automatically implies an extended version of the Penrose junction conditions. It turns out that the conditions for identifying points of the background spacetime across the impulse are the same as in the original Penrose "cut and paste" construction, but their derivatives now directly represent the influence of the gyraton on the axial motion of test particles. Our results apply both for vacuum and nonvacuum solutions of Einstein's field equations, and can also be extended to other theories of gravity.

The global uniqueness and $C^1$-regularity of geodesics in expanding impulsive gravitational waves

We study geodesics in the complete family of expanding impulsive gravitational waves propagating in spaces of constant curvature, that is Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter universes. Employing the continuous form of the metric we rigorously prove existence and global uniqueness of continuously differentiable geodesics (in the sense of Filippov) and study their interaction with the impulsive wave. Thereby we justify the "$C^1$-matching procedure" used in the literature to derive their explicit form.

Completeness of general pp-wave spacetimes and their impulsive limit

We investigate geodesic completeness in the full family of pp-wave or Brinkmann spacetimes in their extended as well as in their impulsive form. This class of geometries contains the recently studied gyratonic pp-waves, modelling the exterior field of a spinning beam of null particles, as well as NPWs, which generalise classical pp-waves by allowing for a general wave surface. The problem of geodesic completeness reduces to the question of completeness of trajectories on a Riemannian manifold under an external force field. Building upon respective recent results we derive completeness criteria in terms of the spatial asymptotics of the profile function in the extended case. In the impulsive case we use a fixed point argument to show that irrespective of the behaviour of the profile function all geometries in the class are complete.

Geodesics in nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves with $Λ$, Part I

We investigate the geodesics in the entire class of nonexpanding impulsive gravitational waves propagating in an (anti-)de Sitter universe using the distributional form of the metric. Employing a 5-dimensional embedding formalism and a general regularisation technique we prove existence and uniqueness of geodesics crossing the wave impulse leading to a completeness result. We also derive the explicit form of the geodesics thereby confirming previous results derived in a heuristic approach.

Geodesic completeness of generalized space-times

We define the notion of geodesic completeness for semi-Riemannian metrics of low regularity in the framework of the geometric theory of generalized functions. We then show completeness of a wide class of impulsive gravitational wave space-times.

Employing the continuous form of the metric we prove existence and uniqueness of continuously differentiable geodesics (in the sense of Filippov) and use a C^1-matching procedure to explicitly derive their form.

The globally hyperbolic metric splitting for non-smooth wave-type space-times

We investigate a generalization of the so-called metric splitting of globally hyperbolic space-times to non-smooth Lorentzian manifolds and show the existence of this metric splitting for a class of wave-type space-times. Our approach is based on smooth approximations of non-smooth space-times by families (or sequences) of globally hyperbolic space-times. In the same setting we indicate as an application the extension of a previous result on the Cauchy problem for the wave equation.

On the completeness of impulsive gravitational wave space-times

We consider a class of impulsive gravitational wave space-times, which generalize impulsive pp-waves. They are of the form $M=N\times\mathbb{R}^2_1$, where $(N,h)$ is a Riemannian manifold of arbitrary dimension and $M$ carries the line element $ds^2=dh^2+ 2dudv+f(x)δ(u)du^2$ with $dh^2$ the line element of $N$ and $δ$ the Dirac measure. We prove a completeness result for such space-times $M$ with complete Riemannian part $N$.
