High-frequency spectral asymptotics and homogenization for quasiperiodic operators

We study the spectral asymptotics of elliptic operators with quasiperiodic coefficients by exploiting projections from higher-dimensional periodic functions. Using the framework of two-scale convergence adapted to cut-and-project quasiperiodic structures we establish that, in the low-frequency (homogenization) regime, the spectrum converges to that of a homogenized operator with effective coefficients determined by a cell problem on the higher-dimensional torus. In the high-frequency regime, we introduce a rescaling approach that transforms the problem to an expanding domain with asymptotically frozen coefficients. In the critical scaling, the rescaled spectrum converges to the union of the Bloch spectra arising from the quasiperiodic bulk and a boundary layer spectrum consisting of eigenfunctions concentrated near the boundary of the macroscopic domain. This boundary spectrum can be characterised as a subset of the spectrum of a family of half-space operators with frozen macroscopic coefficients. For any non-critical scaling, the rescaled spectrum fills the positive real line.

Perturbative Approach to Nonlinear Capacitance Matrix Formulations

We study a nonlinear Helmholtz system with cubic nonlinearity on high-contrast inclusions in three dimensions, and the solitons that emerge as the contrast $δ$ tends to zero. Using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator and a capacitance formalism, we develop a perturbative cascade that expands the resonant frequency and field in powers of $\sqrtδ$. Our main result is a rigorous two-way correspondence with a finite discrete nonlinear capacitance system: every discrete solution lifts to a continuous soliton (a convergent expansion, analytic in $\sqrtδ$), and every continuous family with the natural subwavelength scaling reduces to a discrete one. The construction is algorithmic, giving higher-order corrections in both the subwavelength and non-subwavelength regimes, the latter via a frequency-dependent capacitance matrix. We illustrate the theory numerically and characterise a symmetry-breaking bifurcation in a symmetric dimer.

A Real-Space Formulation of the Zak Phase via Weyl m-Functions

We establish a new, real-space formula for the Zak phase for one dimensional periodic Jacobi operators in terms of the Weyl $m_+$-function that does not rely on Floquet-Bloch theory. This novel representation highlights the dependence of the Zak phase on boundary terms. Moreover, we show how to recover the classical quantisation of the Zak phase for periodic Jacobi operators with inversion symmetric fundamental cells.

Uniform Hyperbolicity, Bandgaps and Edge Modes in Aperiodic Systems of Subwavelength Resonators

We aim to characterise the spectral distributions of bi-infinite, semi-infinite, and finite aperiodic one-dimensional arrays of subwavelength resonators, constructed by sampling from a finite library of building blocks. By adopting the modern formalism of uniform hyperbolicity, we are able to strengthen and rigorously prove a Saxon-Hutner-type result, fully characterising the spectral gaps of the composite bi-infinite aperiodic system in terms of its constituent blocks. Crucial to this approach is a change of basis from transfer matrices to propagation matrices, allowing for a block-level characterisation. This approach also enables an explicit characterisation of edge-induced eigenmodes in the semi-infinite setting. Finally, we leverage finite section methods for Jacobi operators to extend our results to finite systems - providing strict bounds for their spectra in terms of their constituent blocks.

Competing edge and bulk localisation in non-reciprocal disordered systems

We investigate the competing mechanisms of localisation in one-dimensional block disordered subwavelength resonator systems subject to non-reciprocal damping, induced by an imaginary gauge potential. Using a symmetrisation approach to enable the adaptation of tools from Hermitian systems, we derive the limiting spectral distribution of these systems as the number of blocks goes to infinity and characterise their spectral properties in terms of the spectral properties of their constituent blocks. By employing a transfer matrix approach, we then clarify, in terms of Lyapunov exponents, the competition between the edge localisation due to imaginary gauge potentials and the bulk localisation due to disorder. In particular, we demonstrate how the disorder acts as insulation against the non-Hermitian skin effect, preventing edge localisation for small imaginary gauge potentials.

Convergence of supercell and superspace methods for computing spectra of quasiperiodic operators

We study the convergence of two of the most widely used and intuitive approaches for computing the spectra of differential operators with quasiperiodic coefficients: the supercell method and the superspace method. In both cases, Floquet-Bloch theory for periodic operators can be used to compute approximations to the spectrum. We illustrate our results with examples of Schrödinger and Helmholtz operators.

Spectra and pseudo-spectra of tridiagonal $k$-Toeplitz matrices and the topological origin of the non-Hermitian skin effect

We establish new results on the spectra and pseudo-spectra of tridiagonal $k$-Toeplitz operators and matrices. In particular, we prove the connection between the winding number of the eigenvalues of the symbol function and the exponential decay of the associated eigenvectors (or pseudo-eigenvectors). Our results elucidate the topological origin of the non-Hermitian skin effect in general one-dimensional polymer systems of subwavelength resonators with imaginary gauge potentials, proving the observation and conjecture in arXiv:2307.13551. We also numerically verify our theory for these systems.
