Linearized wave-damping structure of Vlasov-Poisson in $\mathbb R^3$

In this paper we study the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous Maxwellian background distribution in $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$. In contrast with the confined case $\mathbb T^d _x \times \mathbb R_v ^d$, or the unconfined case $\mathbb R^d_x \times \mathbb R^d_v$ with screening, the dynamics of the disturbance are not scattering towards free transport as $t \to \pm \infty$: we show that the electric field decomposes into a very weakly-damped Klein-Gordon-type evolution for long waves and a Landau-damped evolution. The Klein-Gordon-type waves solve, to leading order, the compressible Euler-Poisson equations linearized about a constant density state, despite the fact that our model is collisionless, i.e. there is no trend to local or global thermalization of the distribution function in strong topologies. We prove dispersive estimates on the Klein-Gordon part of the dynamics. The Landau damping part of the electric field decays faster than free transport at low frequencies and damps as in the confined case at high frequencies; in fact, it decays at the same rate as in the screened case. As such, neither contribution to the electric field behaves as in the vacuum case.

Uniqueness of the Non-Equilibrium Steady State for a $1$d BGK model in kinetic theory

We continue our investigation of kinetic models of a one-dimensional gas in contact with homogeneous thermal reservoirs at different temperatures. Nonlinear collisional interactions between particles are modeled by a so-called BGK dynamics which conserves local energy and particle density. Weighting the nonlinear BGK term with a parameter $α\in [0,1]$, and the linearinteraction with the reservoirs by $(1-α)$, we prove that for all $α$ close enough to zero, the explicit spatially uniform non-equilibrium stable state (NESS) is \emph{unique}, and there are no spatially non-uniform NESS with a spatial density $ρ$ belonging to $L^p$ for any $p>1$. We also show that for all $α\in [0,1]$, the spatially uniform NESS is dynamically stable, with small perturbation converging to zero exponentially fast.

Approach to the steady state in kinetic models with thermal reservoirs at different temperatures

We continue the investigation of kinetic models of a system in contact via stochastic interactions with several spatially homogeneous thermal reservoirs at different temperatures. Considering models different from those investigated in earlier work, we explicitly compute the unique spatially uniform non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) and prove that it is approached exponentially fast from any uniform initial state. This leaves open the question of whether there exist NESS that are not spatially uniform. Making a further simplification of our models, we then prove non-existence of such NESS and exponential approach to the unique spatially uniform NESS (with a computably boundable rate). The method of proof relies on refined Doeblin estimates and other probabilisitic techniques, and is quite different form the analysis in earlier work that was based on contraction mapping methods.

Landau damping in finite regularity for unconfined systems with screened interactions

We prove Landau damping for the collisionless Vlasov equation with a class of $L^1$ interaction potentials (including the physical case of screened Coulomb interactions) on $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$ for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous background. Unlike the confined case $\mathbb T^3_x \times \mathbb R_v^3$, results are obtained for initial data in Sobolev spaces (as well as Gevrey and analytic classes). For spatial frequencies bounded away from zero, the Landau damping of the density is similar to the confined case. The finite regularity is possible due to an additional dispersive mechanism available on $\mathbb R_x^3$ which reduces the strength of the plasma echo resonance.

Exponential approach to, and properties of, a non-equilibrium steady state in a dilute gas

We investigate a kinetic model of a system in contact with several thermal reservoirs at different temperatures $T_α$. Our system is a spatially uniform dilute gas whose internal dynamics is described by the nonlinear Boltzmann equation with Maxwellian collisions. Similarly, the interaction with reservoir $α$ is represented by a Markovian process that has the Maxwellian $M_{T_α}$ as its stationary state. We prove existence and uniqueness of a non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) and show exponential convergence to this NESS in a metric on probability measures introduced into the study of Maxwellian collisions by Gabetta, Toscani and Wenberg (GTW). This shows that the GTW distance between the current velocity distribution to the steady-state velocity distribution is a Lyapunov functional for the system. We also derive expressions for the entropy production in the system plus the reservoirs which is always positive.

Landau damping: paraproducts and Gevrey regularity

We give a new, simpler, proof of nonlinear Landau damping on T^d in Gevrey-1/s regularity (s > 1/3) which matches the regularity requirement predicted by the formal analysis of Mouhot and Villani in the original proof of Landau damping [Acta Mathematica 2011]. Our proof combines in a novel way ideas from the original proof of Landau damping and the proof of inviscid damping in 2D Euler [arXiv:1306.5028]. As in the work on 2D Euler, we use paraproduct decompositions and controlled regularity loss to replace the Newton iteration scheme employed in the original proof. We perform time-response estimates adapted from the original proof to control the plasma echoes and couple them to energy estimates on the distribution function in the style of the work on 2D Euler.

The Wigner-Fokker-Planck equation: Stationary states and large-time behavior

We consider the linear Wigner-Fokker-Planck equation subject to confining potentials which are smooth perturbations of the harmonic oscillator potential. For a certain class of perturbations we prove that the equation admits a unique stationary solution in a weighted Sobolev space. A key ingredient of the proof is a new result on the existence of spectral gaps for Fokker-Planck type operators in certain weighted $L^2$-spaces. In addition we show that the steady state corresponds to a positive density matrix operator with unit trace and that the solutions of the time-dependent problem converge towards the steady state with an exponential rate.
