Piezoelectric-based apparatus for strain tuning

We report the design and construction of piezoelectric-based apparatus for applying continuously tuneable compressive and tensile strains to test samples. It can be used across a wide temperature range, including cryogenic temperatures. The achievable strain is large, so far up to 0.23% at cryogenic temperatures. The apparatus is compact and compatible with a wide variety of experimental probes. In addition, we present a method for mounting high-aspect-ratio samples in order to achieve high strain homogeneity.

Quantum oscillations and high carrier mobility in the delafossite PdCoO$_2$

We present de Haas-van Alphen and resistivity data on single crystals of the delafossite PdCoO2. At 295 K we measure an in-plane resistivity of 2.6 μΩ-cm, making PdCoO2 the most conductive oxide known. The low-temperature in-plane resistivity has an activated rather than the usual T^5 temperature dependence, suggesting a gapping of effective scattering that is consistent with phonon drag. Below 10 K, the transport mean free path is 20 \mum, approximately 10^5 lattice spacings and an astoundingly high value for flux-grown crystals. We discuss the origin of these properties in light of our data.

Local measurement of the superfluid density in the pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ across the superconducting dome

We measure the penetration depth $λ_{ab}(T)$ in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ using local techniques that do not average over the sample. The superfluid density $ρ_s(T)\equiv1/λ_{ab}(T)^2$ has three main features. First, $ρ_s(T=0)$ falls sharply on the underdoped side of the dome. Second, $λ_{ab}(T)$ is flat at low $T$ at optimal doping, indicating fully gapped superconductivity, but varies more strongly in underdoped and overdoped samples, consistent with either a power law or a small second gap. Third, $ρ_s(T)$ varies steeply near $T_c$ for optimal and underdoping. These observations are consistent with an interplay between magnetic and superconducting phases.

Limits on Superconductivity-Related Magnetization in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ from Scanning SQUID Microscopy

We present scanning SQUID microscopy data on the superconductors Sr2RuO4 (Tc = 1.5 K) and PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ (Tc = 1.8 K). In both of these materials, superconductivity-related time-reversal symmetry-breaking fields have been observed by muon spin rotation; our aim was to visualize the structure of these fields. However in neither Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ nor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ do we observe spontaneous superconductivity-related magnetization. In Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, many experimental results have been interpreted on the basis of a $px \pm ipy$ superconducting order parameter. This order parameter is expected to give spontaneous magnetic induction at sample edges and order parameter domain walls. Supposing large domains, our data restrict domain wall and edge fields to no more than ~0.1% and ~0.2% of the expected magnitude, respectively. Alternatively, if the magnetization is of the expected order, the typical domain size is limited to ~30 nm for random domains, or ~500 nm for periodic domains.

Local measurement of the penetration depth in the pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$)$_2$As$_2$

We use magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and scanning SQUID susceptometry to measure the local superfluid density $ρ_{s}$ in Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals from 0.4 K to the critical temperature $T_c=18.5$ K. We observe that the penetration depth $λ$ varies about ten times more slowly with temperature than previously published, with a dependence that can be well described by a clean two-band fully gapped model. We demonstrate that MFM can measure the important and hard-to-determine absolute value of $λ$, as well as obtain its temperature dependence and spatial homogeneity. We find $ρ_{s}$ to be uniform despite the highly disordered vortex pinning.

Evidence for Nodal Superconductivity in LaFePO from Scanning SQUID Susceptometry

We measure changes in the penetration depth $λ$ of the $T_c \approx 6$ K superconductor LaFePO. In the process scanning SQUID susceptometry is demonstrated as a technique for accurately measuring {\it local} temperature-dependent changes in $λ$, making it ideal for studying early or difficult-to-grow materials. $λ$ of LaFePO is found to vary linearly with temperature from 0.36 to $\sim$2 K, with a slope of 143$\pm$15 Å/K, suggesting line nodes in the superconducting order parameter. The linear dependence up to $\sim T_c/3$ is similar to the cuprate superconductors, indicating well-developed nodes.

A Terraced Scanning Superconducting Quantum Interference Device Susceptometer with Sub-Micron Pickup Loops

Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) can have excellent spin sensitivity depending on their magnetic flux noise, pick-up loop diameter, and distance from the sample. We report a family of scanning SQUID susceptometers with terraced tips that position the pick-up loops 300 nm from the sample. The 600 nm - 2 um pickup loops, defined by focused ion beam, are integrated into a 12-layer optical lithography process allowing flux-locked feedback, in situ background subtraction and optimized flux noise. These features enable a sensitivity of ~70 electron spins per root Hertz at 4K.
