Small Vacuum Energy and Tunneling in a Modified Bousso-Polchinski Model

We propose a simplified model for the cosmological constant in string theory flux vacua motivated by type IIB and F-theory compactifications. Relative to the Bousso-Polchinski model, small vacuum energy spacing occurs in thin wafers rather than thin shells. The model is applied to the entire Sch\"oller-Skarke database of Calabi-Yau fourfolds, which exhibit $532,600,483$ distinct sets of Hodge numbers. The overwhelming majority of those ($99.95\%$ percent for some choices of parameters) exhibit a vacuum energy spacing of~$10^{-120}$ in Planck units or smaller. Brown-Teitelboim membrane nucleation transitions can populate this landscape of flux vacua. In the thin-wall approximation, and ignoring gravitational corrections, we find that the bubble transitions are always dominated by giant leaps in flux space. The age of the universe places a bound on Calabi-Yau topology that is satisfied for the entire Sch\"oller-Skarke database.

The Desert and the Swampland

The most natural expectation away from asymptotic limits in moduli space of supergravity theories is the desert scenario, where there are few states between massless fields and the quantum gravity cutoff. In this paper we initiate a systematic study of these regions deep in the moduli space, and use it to place a bound on the number of massless modes by relating it to the black hole species problem. There exists a consistent sub-Planckian UV cutoff (the species scale) which resolves the black hole species problem without bounding the number of light modes. We reevaluate this in the context of supersymmetric string vacua in the desert region and show that even though heuristically the species scale is compatible with expectations, the BPS states of the actual string vacua lead to a stronger dependence of the cutoff scale on the number of massless modes. We propose that this discrepancy, which can be captured by the "BPS desert conjecture", resurrects the idea of a uniform bound on the number of light modes as a way to avoid the black hole species problem. This conjecture also implies a stronger form of the Tadpole Conjecture, which leads to an obstruction in stabilizing all moduli semi-classically for large number of moduli in flux compactifications.

PQ Axiverse

We show that the strong CP problem is solved in a large class of compactifications of string theory. The Peccei-Quinn mechanism solves the strong CP problem if the CP-breaking effects of the ultraviolet completion of gravity and of QCD are small compared to the CP-preserving axion potential generated by low-energy QCD instantons. We characterize both classes of effects. To understand quantum gravitational effects, we consider an ensemble of flux compactifications of type IIB string theory on orientifolds of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in the geometric regime, taking a simple model of QCD on D7-branes. We show that the D-brane instanton contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment falls exponentially in $N^4$, with $N$ the number of axions. In particular, this contribution is negligible in all models in our ensemble with $N>17$. We interpret this result as a consequence of large $N$ effects in the geometry that create hierarchies in instanton actions and also suppress the ultraviolet cutoff. We also compute the CP breaking due to high-energy instantons in QCD. In the absence of vectorlike pairs, we find contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment that are not excluded, but that could be accessible to future experiments if the scale of supersymmetry breaking is sufficiently low. The existence of vectorlike pairs can lead to a larger dipole moment. Finally, we show that a significant fraction of models are allowed by standard cosmological and astrophysical constraints.

$6$D Anomaly-Free Matter Spectrum in F-theory on Singular Spaces

In this paper we study the 6d localized charged matter spectrum of F-theory directly on a singular elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-fold, i.e. without smoothing via resolution or deformation of the entire fibration. Given only the base surface, discriminant locus, and the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ local system, we propose a general prescription for determining the charged matter spectrum localized at intersections of seven-branes, using the technology of string junctions. More precisely, at each codimension-$2$ collision of seven-branes, we determine the local seven-brane content and compute the number of massless string junctions modulo the action of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy. We find agreement with the predicted results from $6$d anomaly cancellation in all cases considered. Examples include a generic Weierstrass model with arbitrary Kodaira fiber intersecting an $I_1$, as well as cases with jointly charged matter localized at intersections of non-abelian seven-branes.

Non-Holomorphic Cycles and Non-BPS Black Branes

We study extremal non-BPS black holes and strings arising in M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds, obtained by wrapping M2 branes on non-holomorphic 2-cycles and M5 branes on non-holomorphic 4-cycles. Using the attractor mechanism we compute the black hole mass and black string tension, leading to a conjectural formula for the asymptotic volumes of connected, locally volume-minimizing representatives of non-holomorphic, even-dimensional homology classes in the threefold, without knowledge of an explicit metric. In the case of divisors we find examples where the volume of the representative corresponding to the black string is less than the volume of the minimal piecewise-holomorphic representative, predicting recombination for those homology classes and leading to stable, non-BPS strings. We also compute the central charges of non-BPS strings in F-theory via a near-horizon $AdS_3$ limit in 6d which, upon compactification on a circle, account for the asymptotic entropy of extremal non-supersymmetric 5d black holes (i.e., the asymptotic count of non-holomorphic minimal 2-cycles).

Superradiance in String Theory

We perform an extensive analysis of the statistics of axion masses and interactions in compactifications of type IIB string theory, and we show that black hole superradiance excludes some regions of Calabi-Yau moduli space. Regardless of the cosmological model, a theory with an axion whose mass falls in a superradiant band can be probed by the measured properties of astrophysical black holes, unless the axion self-interaction is large enough to disrupt formation of a condensate. We study a large ensemble of compactifications on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, with $1 \leq h^{1,1} \leq 491$ closed string axions, and determine whether the superradiance conditions on the masses and self-interactions are fulfilled. The axion mass spectrum is largely determined by the K\"ahler parameters, for mild assumptions about the contributing instantons, and takes a nearly-universal form when $h^{1,1} \gg 1$. When the K\"ahler moduli are taken at the tip of the stretched K\"ahler cone, the fraction of geometries excluded initially grows with $h^{1,1}$, to a maximum of $\approx 0.5$ at $h^{1,1} \approx 160$, and then falls for larger $h^{1,1}$. Further inside the K\"ahler cone, the superradiance constraints are far weaker, but for $h^{1,1} \gg 100$ the decay constants are so small that these geometries may be in tension with astrophysical bounds, depending on the realization of the Standard Model.

Gravitational Waves from Dark Yang-Mills Sectors

Dark Yang-Mills sectors, which are ubiquitous in the string landscape, may be reheated above their critical temperature and subsequently go through a confining first-order phase transition that produces stochastic gravitational waves in the early universe. Taking into account constraints from lattice and from Yang-Mills (center and Weyl) symmetries, we use a phenomenological model to construct an effective potential of the semi quark-gluon plasma phase, from which we compute the gravitational wave signal produced during confinement for numerous gauge groups. The signal is maximized when the dark sector dominates the energy density of the universe at the time of the phase transition. In that case, we find that it is within reach of the next-to-next generation of experiments (BBO, DECIGO) for a range of dark confinement scales near the weak scale.

Superradiance Exclusions in the Landscape of Type IIB String Theory

We obtain constraints from black hole superradiance in an ensemble of compactifications of type IIB string theory. The constraints require knowing only the axion masses and self-interactions, and are insensitive to the cosmological model. We study more than $2 \cdot 10^5$ Calabi-Yau manifolds with Hodge numbers $1\leq h^{1,1}\leq 491$ and compute the axion spectrum at two reference points in moduli space for each geometry. Our computation of the classical theory is explicit, while for the instanton-generated axion potential we use a conservative model. The measured properties of astrophysical black holes exclude parts of our dataset. At the point in moduli space corresponding to the tip of the stretched K\"{a}hler cone, we exclude $\approx 50\%$ of manifolds in our sample at 95% C.L., while further inside the K\"{a}hler cone, at an extremal point for realising the Standard Model, we exclude a maximum of $\approx 7\%$ of manifolds at $h^{1,1}=11$, falling to nearly zero by $h^{1,1}=100$.

Constraints on Standard Model Constructions in F-theory

We argue that the following three statements cannot all be true: (i) our vacuum is a type IIB / F-theory vacuum at moderate-to-large $h^{1,1}$, (ii) the $\alpha'$-expansion is controlled via the supergravity approximation, \`a la the KKLT and LVS scenarios, and (iii) there are no additional gauged sectors from seven-branes. Since nearly all known globally consistent F-theory models with the exact chiral spectrum of the Standard Model and gauge coupling unification occur at moderate $h^{1,1}$, this finding calls for new moduli stabilization scenarios or/and a rich seven-brane dark sector.

Statistical Predictions in String Theory and Deep Generative Models

Generative models in deep learning allow for sampling probability distributions that approximate data distributions. We propose using generative models for making approximate statistical predictions in the string theory landscape. For vacua admitting a Lagrangian description this can be thought of as learning random tensor approximations of couplings. As a concrete proof-of-principle, we demonstrate in a large ensemble of Calabi-Yau manifolds that Kahler metrics evaluated at points in Kahler moduli space are well-approximated by ensembles of matrices produced by a deep convolutional Wasserstein GAN. Accurate approximations of the Kahler metric eigenspectra are achieved with far fewer than $h^{11}$ Gaussian draws. Accurate extrapolation to values of $h^{11}$ outside the training set are achieved via a conditional GAN. Together, these results implicitly suggest the existence of strong correlations in the data, as might be expected if Reid's fantasy is correct.

Instanton Resummation and the Weak Gravity Conjecture

We develop methods for resummation of instanton lattice series. Using these tools, we investigate the consequences of the Weak Gravity Conjecture for large-field axion inflation. We find that the Sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture implies a constraint on the volume of the axion fundamental domain. However, we also identify conditions under which alignment and clockwork constructions, and a new variant of N-flation that we devise, can evade this constraint. We conclude that some classes of low-energy effective theories of large-field axion inflation are consistent with the strongest proposed form of the Weak Gravity Conjecture, while others are not.

On String Theory Expectations for Photon Couplings to Axion-Like Particles

ALP-photon couplings are modeled in large ensembles of string vacua and random matrix theories. In all cases, the effective coupling increases polynomially in the number of ALPs, of which hundreds or thousands are expected in the string ensembles, many of which are ultralight. The expected value of the couplings $g_{a\gamma\gamma}\simeq 10^{-12}\text{GeV}^{-1} - 10^{-10}\text{GeV}^{-1}$ provide viable targets for future x-ray telescopes and axion helioscopes, and in some cases are already in tension with existing data.

Minimal Surfaces and Weak Gravity

We show that the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) implies a nontrivial upper bound on the volumes of the minimal-volume cycles in certain homology classes that admit no calibrated representatives. In compactification of type IIB string theory on an orientifold $X$ of a Calabi-Yau threefold, we consider a homology class $[\Sigma] \in H_4(X,\mathbb{Z})$ represented by a union $\Sigma_{\cup}$ of holomorphic and antiholomorphic cycles. The instanton form of the WGC applied to the axion charge $[\Sigma]$ implies an upper bound on the action of a non-BPS Euclidean D3-brane wrapping the minimal-volume representative $\Sigma_{\mathrm{min}}$ of $[\Sigma]$. We give an explicit example of an orientifold $X$ of a hypersurface in a toric variety, and a hyperplane $\mathcal{H} \subset H_4(X,\mathbb{Z})$, such that for any $[\Sigma] \in H$ that satisfies the WGC, the minimal volume obeys $\mathrm{Vol}(\Sigma_{\mathrm{min}}) \ll \mathrm{Vol}(\Sigma_{\cup})$: the holomorphic and antiholomorphic components recombine to form a much smaller cycle. In particular, the sub-Lattice WGC applied to $X$ implies large recombination, no matter how sparse the sublattice. Non-BPS instantons wrapping $\Sigma_{\mathrm{min}}$ are then more important than would be predicted from a study of BPS instantons wrapping the separate components of $\Sigma_{\cup}$. Our analysis hinges on a novel computation of effective divisors in $X$ that are not inherited from effective divisors of the toric variety.

On Axion Reheating in the String Landscape

We demonstrate that asymmetric reheating arises in a large ensemble of string compactifications with many axions and gauged dark sectors. This phenomenon may help avoid numerous cosmological problems that may arise if the sectors were reheated democratically. Distributions of couplings are presented for two classes of axion reheatons, both of which exhibit very small couplings to most of the gauge sectors. In one class, ratios of reheating couplings and also preferred gauge groups are frequently determined by local regions in the string geometry.

The Kreuzer-Skarke Axiverse

We study the topological properties of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces at large $h^{1,1}$. We obtain two million threefolds $X$ by triangulating polytopes from the Kreuzer-Skarke list, including all polytopes with $240 \le h^{1,1}\le 491$. We show that the K\"ahler cone of $X$ is very narrow at large $h^{1,1}$, and as a consequence, control of the $\alpha^{\prime}$ expansion in string compactifications on $X$ is correlated with the presence of ultralight axions. If every effective curve has volume $\ge 1$ in string units, then the typical volumes of irreducible effective curves and divisors, and of $X$ itself, scale as $(h^{1,1})^p$, with $3\lesssim p \lesssim 7$ depending on the type of cycle in question. Instantons from branes wrapping these cycles are thus highly suppressed.

Non-simply-laced Symmetry Algebras in F-theory on Singular Spaces

We demonstrate how non-simply-laced gauge and flavor symmetries arise in F-theory on spaces with non-isolated singularities. The breaking from a simply-laced symmetry to one that is non-simply-laced is induced by Calabi-Yau complex structure deformation. In all examples the deformation maintains non-isolated singularities but is accompanied by a splitting of an I1 seven-brane that opens new loops in the geometry near a non-abelian seven-brane. The splitting also arises in the moduli space of a probe D3-brane, which upon traversing the new loop experiences a monodromy that acts on 3-7 string junctions on the singular space. The monodromy reduces the symmetry algebra, which is the flavor symmetry of the D3-brane and the gauge symmetry of the seven-brane, to one that is non-simply-laced. A collision of the D3-brane with the seven-brane gives rise to a 4d N = 1 SCFT with a non-simply-laced flavor symmetry.

The Singularity Structure of Scale-Invariant Rank-2 Coulomb Branches

We compute the spectrum of scaling dimensions of Coulomb branch operators in 4d rank-2 $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ superconformal field theories. Only a finite rational set of scaling dimensions is allowed. It is determined by using information about the global topology of the locus of metric singularities on the Coulomb branch, the special K\"ahler geometry near those singularities, and electric-magnetic duality monodromies along orbits of the $\rm\, U(1)_R$ symmetry. A set of novel topological and geometric results are developed which promise to be useful for the study and classification of Coulomb branch geometries at all ranks.

The Hodge Numbers of Divisors of Calabi-Yau Threefold Hypersurfaces

We prove a formula for the Hodge numbers of square-free divisors of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces in toric varieties. Euclidean branes wrapping divisors affect the vacuum structure of Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIB string theory, M-theory, and F-theory. Determining the nonperturbative couplings due to Euclidean branes on a divisor $D$ requires counting fermion zero modes, which depend on the Hodge numbers $h^i({\cal{O}}_D)$. Suppose that $X$ is a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurface in a toric variety $V$, and let $D$ be the restriction to $X$ of a square-free divisor of $V$. We give a formula for $h^i({\cal{O}}_D)$ in terms of combinatorial data. Moreover, we construct a CW complex $\mathscr{P}_D$ such that $h^i({\cal{O}}_D)=h_i(\mathscr{P}_D)$. We describe an efficient algorithm that makes possible for the first time the computation of sheaf cohomology for such divisors at large $h^{1,1}$. As an illustration we compute the Hodge numbers of a class of divisors in a threefold with $h^{1,1}=491$. Our results are a step toward a systematic computation of Euclidean brane superpotentials in Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces.
