Fragment-Based Configuration Interaction: Towards a Unifying Description of Biexcitonic Processes in Molecular Aggregates

Biexcitonic states govern singlet fission, triplet-triplet and exciton-exciton annihilation, yet a unified understanding of how these processes compete within a shared electronic manifold remains elusive. We outline a conceptual framework based on fragment-based configuration-interaction that systematically constructs diabatic Hamiltonians spanning the full one-particle (LE, CT) and two-particle (LELE, CTCT, TT, CTX with X = LE, CT, or T) manifolds from monomer-local building blocks, preserving physical interpretability throughout. SymbolicCI provides analytic Hamiltonian matrix elements for efficient large-scale calculations; NOCI-F delivers benchmark-quality couplings. The resulting diabatic Hamiltonians can be coupled to quantum dynamics simulations. Applications to ethylene aggregates and the anthracene crystal reveal CTX configurations as electronic gateways bridging excitonic manifolds, with CT-mediated relaxation pathways competing with conventional annihilation. In H-type aggregates, LECT admixture stabilizes a "bi-excimer" analogous to one-particle excimers. By providing first-principles access to biexciton formation, separation, and transport, we hope to stimulate further exchange between electronic structure and quantum dynamics communities toward a predictive understanding of multiexcitonic photophysics.

Is Herbertsmithite far from an ideal antiferromagnet? Ab-initio answer including in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and coupling with extra-plane impurities

Herbertsmithite is known as the archetype of a S=1/2 nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagomé lattice, theoretically presumed to be a quantum gapless spin liquid. However, more and more experiments reveal that the model suffers from deviations from the ideal one, evidenced at very low temperatures. This detailed ab initio study focuses on two such deviations that have never been quantitatively calculated: the anisotropic exchange interactions and the Heisenberg exchange with extra-plane magnetic impurities. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is found to have an in-plane component almost three times larger than the out-of-plane component, but typically obviated in theoretical studies. Moreover, it is shown that the extra-plane magnetic impurities have a strong ferromagnetic interaction (minus half the main exchange $J_1$ ) with the Kagomé magnetic sites. Combined with an estimated occurrence of these magnetic impurities of $\sim15\%$, the present results indicate that two-dimensional magnetic models only describe part of the physics.

Switchable Rashba Anisotropy in Two-dimensional Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskite by Hybrid Improper Ferroelectricity

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are introducing new directions in the 2D materials landscape. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and spin-orbit interactions play a key role in their optoelectronic properties. We perform a detailed study on a recently synthesized ferroelectric 2D-HOIP, (AMP)PbI$_4$ (AMP = 4-aminomethyl-piperidinium). The calculated polarization and Rashba parameter are in excellent agreement with experimental values. We report a striking new effect, i.e., an extraordinarily large Rashba anisotropy that is tunable by ferroelectric polarization: as polarization is reversed, not only the spin texture chirality is inverted, but also the major and minor axes of the Rashba anisotropy ellipse in k-space are interchanged - a pseudo rotation. A $k \cdot p$ model Hamiltonian and symmetry-mode analysis reveal a quadrilinear coupling between the cation-rotation modes responsible for the Rashba ellipse pseudo-rotation, the framework rotation, and the polarization. These findings may provide new avenues for spin-optoelectronic devices such as spin valves or spin FETs.

Ab initio study of the CE magnetic phase in half-doped manganites: Purely magnetic versus double exchange description

The leading electronic interactions governing the local physics of the CE phase of half-doped manganites are extracted from correlated ab initio calculations performed on an embedded cluster. The electronic structure of the low-energy states is dominated by double exchange configurations and O-2$p_σ$ to Mn-3d charge transfer configurations. The model spectra of both a purely magnetic non-symmetric Heisenberg Hamiltonian involving a magnetic oxygen and two non-symmetric double exchange models are compared to the \textit{ab initio} one. While a satisfactory agreement between the Heisenberg spectrum and the calculated one is obtained, the best description is provided by a double exchange model involving excited non-Hund atomic states. This refined model not only perfectly reproduces the spectrum of the embedded cluster in the crystal geometry, but also gives a full description of the local double-well potential energy curve of the ground state (resulting from the interaction of the charge localized electronic configurations) and the local potential energy curves of all excited states ruled by the double exchange mechanism.

Microscopic origin of isotropic non-Heisenberg behavior in highly correlated systems

We have reanalyzed the microscopic origin of the isotropic deviations that are observed from the energy spacings predicted by the HDVV Hamiltonian. Usually, a biquadratic spin operator is added to the HDVV Hamiltonian to account for such deviations. It is shown here that this operator cannot describe the effect of the excited atomic non-Hund states which brought the most important contribution to the deviations. For systems containing more than two magnetic centers, non-Hund states cause additional interactions that are of the same order of magnitude as the biquadratic exchange and should have significant effects on the macroscopic properties of extended systems.

The magnetic structure of Li2CuO2: from ab initio calculations to macroscopic simulations

The magnetic structure of the edge sharing cuprate compound Li2CuO2 has been investigated by means of ab initio electronic structure calculations. The first and second neighbor in-chain magnetic interactions are calculated to be -142 K and 22 K, respectively. The ratio between the two parameters is smaller than suggested previously in the literature. The interchain interactions are antiferromagnetic in nature and of the order of a few Kelvins only. Monte Carlo simulations using the ab initio parameters to define the model Hamiltonian result in a Neel temperature in rather good agreement with experiment. Spin population analysis situate the magnetic moment on the copper and oxygen ions somewhere between the completely localized picture derived from experiment and the more delocalized picture based on local density calculations.
