Foundry CMOS platform for multimodal quantum materials characterization

Quantum materials experiments increasingly rely on microwave, electrical, thermal, optical, and structural probes, but these capabilities are typically assembled from custom hardware that limits reproducibility and scalability. Here we show that a commercial 65-nm CMOS process can be repurposed as a passive, foundry-manufacturable characterization platform by functionally partitioning its metal stack into microwave, thermal, and electrical subsystems within a 1 mm2 footprint. The integrated RF architecture enables cryogenic magnetic susceptibility measurements of Fe3GeTe2 heterostructures at 1.75 K without sample-specific fabrication. We further demonstrate NV-center optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) with >20% contrast at 4-9 dBm microwave power, reducing power requirements by 20-25 dB relative to conventional antenna-based approaches while maintaining sensitivities of 2-3 uT/sqrt(Hz). We additionally confirm compatibility with in-situ electron-beam imaging, showing no measurable degradation in image quality upon device operation. These results establish a scalable, foundry-manufacturable platform for multimodal quantum sensing and materials characterization.

Deterministic fast and stable phase retrieval in multiple dimensions

We present the first phase retrieval algorithm guaranteed to solve the multidimensional phase retrieval problem in polynomial arithmetic complexity without prior information. The method successfully terminates in O(N log(N)) operations for Fourier measurements with cardinality N. The algorithm is guaranteed to succeed for a large class of objects, which we term "Schwarz objects". We further present an easy-to-calculate and well-conditioned diagonal operator that transforms any feasible phase-retrieval instance into one that is solved by our method. We derive our method by combining techniques from classical complex analysis, algebraic topology, and modern numerical analysis. Concretely, we pose the phase retrieval problem as a multiplicative Cousin problem, construct an approximate solution using a modified integral used for the Schwarz problem, and refine the approximate solution to an exact solution via standard optimization methods. We present numerical experimentation demonstrating our algorithm's performance and its superiority to existing method. Finally, we demonstrate that our method is robust against Gaussian noise.

Metal-Optic Nanophotonic Modulators in Standard CMOS Technology

Integrating nanophotonics with electronics promises revolutionary applications, from LiDAR to holographic displays. Although silicon photonics is maturing, realizing active nanophotonics in the ubiquitous bulk CMOS processes remains challenging. We introduce a fabless approach to embed active nanophotonics in bulk CMOS by co-designing the back-end-of-line metal layers for optical functionality. Using a 65nm CMOS process, we create plasmonic liquid crystal modulators with switching speeds 100x faster than commercial technologies. This zero-change nanophotonics method could equip mass-produced chips with optical communications, sensing and imaging. Embedding nanophotonics in the dominant electronics platform democratizes nanofabrication, spawning technologies from chip-scale LiDAR to holographic light-field displays.
