$F_K/F_\pi$ as a precision test of a new four flavor Domain Wall Fermion action

We present a new set of lattice QCD ensembles with four flavors of smeared M\"obius Domain Wall Fermions with good chiral symmetry and small fifth-dimensional extent. A modest amount of computing resources was sufficient to generate 30 publicly-available ensembles spanning five lattice spacings and a broad range of pion masses down to physical. To scrutinize our action we determine $F_{K^{\pm}}/F_{\pi^{\pm}} = 1.1962(34)$, a key quantity for precision CKM unitarity tests, heralding a future of inexpensive high-precision calculations of hadronic observables with chiral fermions.

Investigating the role of tetraquark operators in lattice QCD studies of the $a_0(980)$ and $\kappa$ resonances

The role of tetraquark operators in studying the isodoublet strange $\kappa$ and isovector nonstrange $a_0(980)$ scalar mesons in lattice QCD is examined using an ensemble with $m_\pi\approx230$ MeV and spatial extent $L$ such that $m_\pi L\approx4.4$. Hermitian correlation matrices using both single-meson, meson-meson, and tetraquark interpolating operators are used to extract the spectrum of finite-volume stationary states in the appropriate symmetry channels. Hundreds of local and extended tetraquark operators are explored. Determinations of the spectrum in each channel are found to be unreliable without the inclusion of at least one tetraquark operator. For example, the inclusion of tetraquark operators with isospin 1/2 and strangeness 1 quantum numbers reveals the existence of an additional energy level in the $K\eta$ sub-system below the $K\eta$ threshold. The implications of this on parametrizing the scattering $K$-matrix through a well-known quantization condition to extract properties of the $\kappa$ and $a_0(980)$ scalar meson resonances are discussed.

Preliminary study of the $H$ dibaryon in $N_{\rm f}=2+1$ lattice QCD

We present preliminary results on the $I=0$, $S=-2$ $H$ dibaryon in $N_{\rm f}=2+1$ QCD. The calculation is performed with heavier-than-physical quarks ($m_\pi \approx 280$ MeV) on a single CLS ensemble. Correlation matrices are constructed using the distillation technique and the three relevant channels, $\Lambda\Lambda$, $N\Xi$, $\Sigma\Sigma$, are investigated to determine the interacting spectrum relevant for $S$-wave across multiple momentum frames. The scattering amplitude is determined by solving the corresponding two-body quantization condition. These preliminary results are part of the ongoing efforts to determine the properties of di-hyperons and to establish whether the $H$ dibaryon exists down to physical quark masses.

Three-body study of the $T_{cc}(3875)^+$ from lattice QCD

We discuss an ongoing first lattice study of the doubly-charmed tetraquark $T_{cc}^+$(3875) via a three-body approach. We investigate the $DD\pi$ system in the $I=0$, $C=2$ sector, where the $T_{cc}^+$ appears as a pole in the $J^P = 1^+$ $DD\pi$ elastic scattering amplitude. The approach automatically incorporates two-body $DD^*$ and three-body $DD\pi$ effects and treats left-hand cuts due to single $\pi$ exchanges. Two CLS ensembles, X252 and X253, with pion mass $M_\pi \approx 280$ MeV, are used, and an operator set comprised of two- and three-hadron and tetraquark operators is employed to extract finite-volume energies. Additional inputs are required for the three-body finite-volume analysis, in the form of amplitudes for the $I=1$ $DD$ and $I=1/2$ $D\pi$ two-body subsystems. We present preliminary results for these subchannels and perform exploratory three-body spectra determinations for simple choices of the three-particle K-matrix $\mathcal{K}_{\text{df}, 3}$, allowing a first comparison to the lattice spectrum.

Low-lying baryon resonances from lattice QCD

Calculating the properties of baryon resonances from quantum chromodynamics requires evaluating the temporal correlations between hadronic operators using integrations over field configurations weighted by a phase associated with the action. By formulating quantum chromodynamics on a space-time lattice in imaginary time, such integrations can be carried out non-perturbatively using a Markov-chain Monte Carlo method with importance sampling. The energies of stationary states in the finite volume of the lattice can be extracted from the temporal correlations. A quantization condition involving the scattering $K$-matrix and a complicated ``box matrix'' also yields a finite-volume energy spectrum. By appropriately parametrizing the scattering $K$-matrix, the best-fit values of the $K$-matrix parameters are those that produce a finite-volume spectrum which most closely matches that obtained from the Monte Carlo computations. Results for the $\Delta$ resonance are presented, and a study of scattering for energies near the $\Lambda(1405)$ resonance is outlined, showing a two pole structure. The prospects for applying this methodology to the Roper resonance are discussed.

Di-nucleons do not form bound states at heavy pion mass

We perform a high-statistics lattice QCD calculation of the low-energy two-nucleon scattering amplitudes. In order to address discrepancies in the literature, the calculation is performed at a heavy pion mass in the limit that the light quark masses are equal to the physical strange quark mass, $m_\pi = m_K \simeq 714 $ MeV. Using a state-of-the-art momentum space method, we rule out the presence of a bound di-nucleon in both the isospin 0 (deuteron) and 1 (di-neutron) channels, in contrast with many previous results that made use of compact hexaquark creation operators. In order to diagnose the discrepancy, we add such hexaquark interpolating operators to our basis and find that they do not affect the determination of the two-nucleon finite volume spectrum, and thus they do not couple to deeply bound di-nucleons that are missed by the momentum-space operators. Further, we perform a high-statistics calculation of the HAL QCD potential on the same gauge ensembles and find qualitative agreement with our main results. We conclude that di-nucleons do not form bound states at heavy pion masses and that previous identification of deeply bound di-nucleons must have arisen from a misidentification of the spectrum from off-diagonal elements of a correlation function.

Nucleon scattering from lattice QCD

Recent results from lattice QCD on baryon resonances and meson-baryon, baryon-baryon scattering are presented. Such scattering processes and resonances can be determined in lattice QCD by first obtaining the finite-volume energy spectrum of stationary states involving meson-baryon and baryon-baryon systems. A well-known quantization condition involving the scattering $K$-matrix and a complicated ``box matrix'' also yields a finite-volume energy spectrum. By appropriately parametrizing the scattering $K$-matrix, the best fit values of the $K$-matrix parameters are those which produce a finite-volume spectrum which best matches that obtained from lattice QCD. The $\Delta$ resonance, a recent study of the two-pole nature of scattering near the $\Lambda(1405)$, and $NN$ scattering in the $SU(3)$ flavor limit are highlighted.

Signs of Non-Monotonic Finite-Volume Corrections to $g_A$

We study finite-volume (FV) corrections to determinations of $g_A$ via lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using analytic results and numerical analysis. We observe that $SU(2)$ Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory does not provide an unambiguous prediction for the sign of the FV correction, which is not surprising when one also considers large-$N_c$ constraints on the axial couplings. We further show that non-monotonic FV corrections are naturally allowed when one considers either including explicit $\Delta$-resonance degrees of freedom or one works to higher orders in the chiral expansion. We investigate the potential impact of these FV corrections with a precision study of $g_A$ using models of FV corrections that are monotonic and non-monotonic. Using lattice QCD data that is approximately at the 1% level of precision, we do not see significant evidence of non-monotonic corrections. Looking forward to the next phase of lattice QCD calculations, we estimate that calculations that are between the 0.1%-1%-level of precision may be sensitive to these FV artifacts. Finally, we present an update of the CalLat prediction of $g_A$ in the isospin limit with sub-percent precision, $g_A^{\rm QCD} = 1.2674(96)$.

Two- and three-meson scattering amplitudes with physical quark masses from lattice QCD

We study systems of two and three mesons composed of pions and kaons at maximal isospin using four CLS ensembles with $a\approx 0.063\;$fm, including one with approximately physical quark masses. Using the stochastic Laplacian-Heaviside method, we determine the energy spectrum of these systems including many levels in different momentum frames and irreducible representations. Using the relativistic two- and three-body finite-volume formalism, we constrain the two and three-meson K matrices, including not only the leading $s$ wave, but also $p$ and $d$ waves. By solving the three-body integral equations, we determine, for the first time, the physical-point scattering amplitudes for $3\pi^+$, $3K^+$, $\pi^+\pi^+ K^+$ and $K^+ K^+ \pi^+$ systems. These are determined for total angular momentum $J^P=0^-$, $1^+$, and $2^-$. We also obtain accurate results for $2\pi^+$, $\pi^+ K^+$, and $2K^+$ phase shifts. We compare our results to Chiral Perturbation Theory, and to phenomenological fits.

QCD predictions for physical multimeson scattering amplitudes

We use lattice QCD calculations of the finite-volume spectra of systems of two and three mesons to determine, for the first time, three-particle scattering amplitudes with physical quark masses. Our results are for combinations of $\pi^+$ and $K^+$, at a lattice spacing $a=0.063\;$fm, and in the isospin-symmetric limit. We also obtain accurate results for maximal-isospin two-meson amplitudes, with those for $\pi^+ K^+$ and $2K^+$ being the first determinations at the physical point. Dense lattice spectra are obtained using the stochastic Laplacian-Heaviside method, and the analysis leading to scattering amplitudes is done using the relativistic finite-volume formalism. Results are compared to chiral perturbation theory and to phenomenological fits to experimental data, finding good agreement.

Update on Glueballs

The recent BESIII announcement of a pseudoscalar glueball candidate makes an update on glueballs from lattice QCD timely. A brief review of how glueballs are studied in lattice QCD is given, and the reasons that glueballs are difficult to study both in lattice QCD with dynamical quarks and in experiments are outlined. Recent glueball studies in lattice QCD are then presented, and an exploratory investigation of the scalar glueball using glueball, meson, and meson-meson operators is summarized, suggesting that no scalar state below 2 GeV or so can be considered to be predominantly a glueball state.

The quark-mass dependence of the potential energy between static colour sources in the QCD vacuum with light and strange quarks

The low-lying energy spectrum of the static-colour-source-anti-source system in a vacuum containing light and strange quarks is computed using lattice QCD for a range of different light quark masses. The resulting levels are described using a simple model Hamiltonian and the parameters in this model are extrapolated to the physical light-quark masses. In this framework, the QCD string tension is found to be $\sqrt{\sigma}=445(3)_{\rm stat}(6)_{\rm sys}$ MeV.

Lattice QCD studies of the $\Delta$ baryon resonance and the $K_0^\ast(700)$ and $a_0(980)$ meson resonances: the role of exotic operators in determining the finite-volume spectrum

Studies of the $\Delta$ baryon resonance and the $K_0^\ast(700)$ and $a_0(980)$ meson resonances using $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD for pion masses near 200 MeV are presented. The $s$-wave scattering lengths for both the $I=1/2$ $N \pi$ and $I=3/2$ $N \pi$ channels and properties of the $\Delta$ resonance are identified from the finite-volume energy levels of the lattice simulation. The importance of a three-quark $\Delta$-operator in the $N\pi$ system and tetraquark operators in the mesonic systems is investigated.

The $\Lambda(1405)$ from Lattice QCD: Determining the Finite-volume Spectra

This work presents technical details of determining the finite-volume energy spectra for the scattering amplitude of the coupled-channel $\pi\Sigma - \bar{K}N$ from lattice QCD data. The importance of reliably extracting such spectra lies in the crucial dependence of the hadronic scattering amplitudes analysis on the energy spectrum when using L\"{u}scher's formalism. Results of the methods used are presented and the final finite-volume spectra are shown. The analysis of the scattering amplitude based on these results, exhibits a two-pole structure for the $\Lambda(1405)$, a virtual bound state below the $\pi\Sigma$ threshold and a resonance pole right below the $\bar{K}N$ threshold.

Low-lying baryon resonances from lattice QCD

Recent results studying the masses and widths of low-lying baryon resonances in lattice QCD are presented. The $S$-wave $N\pi$ scattering lengths for both total isospins $I = 1/2$ and $I = 3/2$ are inferred from the finite-volume spectrum below the inelastic threshold together with the $I = 3/2$ $P$-wave containing the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance. A lattice QCD computation employing a combined basis of three-quark and meson-baryon interpolating operators with definite momentum to determine the coupled channel $\Sigma\pi$-$N\overline{K}$ scattering amplitude in the $\Lambda(1405)$ region is also presented. Our results support the picture of a two-pole structure suggested by theoretical approaches based on $SU(3)$ chiral symmetry and unitarity.

Lattice QCD study of $\pi\Sigma-\bar{K}N$ scattering and the $\Lambda(1405)$ resonance

A lattice QCD computation of the coupled channel $\pi\Sigma-\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the $\Lambda(1405)$ region is detailed. Results are obtained using a single ensemble of gauge field configurations with $N_{\rm f} = 2+1$ dynamical quark flavors and $m_{\pi} \approx 200$ MeV and $m_K\approx487$ MeV. Hermitian correlation matrices using both single baryon and meson-baryon interpolating operators for a variety of different total momenta and irreducible representations are used. Several parametrizations of the two-channel scattering $K$-matrix are utilized to obtain the scattering amplitudes from the finite-volume spectrum. The amplitudes, continued to the complex energy plane, exhibit a virtual bound state below the $\pi\Sigma$ threshold and a resonance pole just below the $\bar{K}N$ threshold.

Two-pole nature of the $\Lambda(1405)$ from lattice QCD

This letter presents the first lattice QCD computation of the coupled channel $\pi\Sigma-\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes at energies near $1405\,{\rm MeV}$. These amplitudes contain the resonance $\Lambda(1405)$ with strangeness $S=-1$ and isospin, spin, and parity quantum numbers $I(J^P)=0(1/2^-)$. However, whether there is a single resonance or two nearby resonance poles in this region is controversial theoretically and experimentally. Using single-baryon and meson-baryon operators to extract the finite-volume stationary-state energies to obtain the scattering amplitudes at slightly unphysical quark masses corresponding to $m_\pi\approx200$ MeV and $m_K\approx487$ MeV, this study finds the amplitudes exhibit a virtual bound state below the $\pi\Sigma$ threshold in addition to the established resonance pole just below the $\bar{K}N$ threshold. Several parametrizations of the two-channel $K$-matrix are employed to fit the lattice QCD results, all of which support the two-pole picture suggested by $SU(3)$ chiral symmetry and unitarity.

Interactions of $\pi K$, $\pi \pi K$ and $KK\pi$ systems at maximal isospin from lattice QCD

We study the interactions of systems of two and three nondegenerate mesons composed of pions and kaons at maximal isospin using lattice QCD, specifically $\pi^+K^+$, $\pi^+\pi^+K^+$ and $K^+K^+\pi^+$. Utilizing the stochastic LapH method, we determine the spectrum of these systems on two CLS $N_f=2+1$ ensembles with pion masses of $200$ MeV and $340$ MeV, and include many levels in different momentum frames. We constrain the K matrices describing two- and three-particle interactions by fitting the spectrum to the results predicted by the finite-volume formalism, including up to $p$ waves. This requires also results for the $\pi^+\pi^+$ and $K^+ K^+$ spectrum, which have been obtained previously on the same configurations. We explore different fitting strategies, comparing fits to energy shifts with fits to energies boosted to the rest frame, and also comparing simultaneous global fits to all relevant two- and three-particle channels to those where we first fit two-particle channels and then add in the three-particle information. We provide the first determination of the three-particle K matrix in $\pi^+\pi^+K^+$ and $K^+ K^+ \pi^+$ systems, finding statistically significant nonzero results in most cases. We include $s$ and $p$ waves in the K matrix for $\pi^+ K^+$ scattering, finding evidence for an attractive $p$-wave scattering length. We compare our results to Chiral Perturbation Theory, including an investigation of the impact of discretization errors, for which we provide the leading order predictions obtained using Wilson Chiral Perturbation Theory.
