A new approach to rating scale definition with quantum-inspired optimization

In finance, assessing the creditworthiness of loan applicants requires lenders to cluster borrowers using rating scales. Financial institutions must define the scales in compliance with strict institutional constraints, resulting in solving a complex combinatorial constrained optimization problem. This contribution studies how to solve this problem using a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) model, a formulation suitable for quantum hardware. We validate this approach by testing the proposed formulation with classical heuristics. We then benchmark the results against a brute-force method to demonstrate consistent solution quality and highlight the framework's suitability for more complex scenarios.

Characterization and upgrade of a quantum graph neural network for charged particle tracking

In the forthcoming years the LHC experiments are going to be upgraded to benefit from the substantial increase of the LHC instantaneous luminosity, which will lead to larger, denser events, and, consequently, greater complexity in reconstructing charged particle tracks, motivating frontier research in new technologies. Quantum machine learning models are being investigated as potential new approaches to high energy physics (HEP) tasks. We characterize and upgrade a quantum graph neural network (QGNN) architecture for charged particle track reconstruction on a simulated high luminosity dataset. The model operates on a set of event graphs, each built from the hits generated in tracking detector layers by particles produced in proton collisions, performing a classification of the possible hit connections between adjacent layers. In this approach the QGNN is designed as a hybrid architecture, interleaving classical feedforward networks with parametrized quantum circuits. We characterize the interplay between the classical and quantum components. We report on the principal upgrades to the original design, and present new evidence of improved training behavior, specifically in terms of convergence toward the final trained configuration.

Extension of the INFN Tier-1 on a HPC system

The INFN Tier-1 located at CNAF in Bologna (Italy) is a center of the WLCG e-Infrastructure, supporting the 4 major LHC collaborations and more than 30 other INFN-related experiments. After multiple tests towards elastic expansion of CNAF compute power via Cloud resources (provided by Azure, Aruba and in the framework of the HNSciCloud project), and building on the experience gained with the production quality extension of the Tier-1 farm on remote owned sites, the CNAF team, in collaboration with experts from the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb experiments, has been working to put in production a solution of an integrated HTC+HPC system with the PRACE CINECA center, located nearby Bologna. Such extension will be implemented on the Marconi A2 partition, equipped with Intel Knights Landing (KNL) processors. A number of technical challenges were faced and solved in order to successfully run on low RAM nodes, as well as to overcome the closed environment (network, access, software distribution, ... ) that HPC systems deploy with respect to standard GRID sites. We show preliminary results from a large scale integration effort, using resources secured via the successful PRACE grant N. 2018194658, for 30 million KNL core hours.

A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

LHCb Results on Semileptonic B/B$_s$/$Λ_b$ Decays

Studies of semileptonic decays of b hadrons with the LHCb experiment are reported. In particular, measurements of the b hadron production fractions at the LHC and Bs semileptonic decays in P-wave charmed mesons are presented. An outlook of the LHCb potential in measuring the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb, as well as decays involving taus, is given.

Measurements of Inclusive $B \rightarrow X_u \ell ν$ Decays

Recent results on inclusive charmless semileptonic decays of B mesons are reviewed. Emphasis is given to measurements on the recoil of fully reconstructed B mesons, which allow to exploit several regions of phase space. Preliminary averages of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ from the Heavy Flavour Working Group are shown, using four different theoretical calculations.

Semileptonic B Decays at the B Factories

Recent results on inclusive and exclusive semileptonic B decays from B Factories are presented. The status and perspectives of the determination of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb with semileptonic B decays is discussed.
