AFFIRM: Affinity Fusion-based Framework for Iteratively Random Motion correction of multi-slice fetal brain MRI

Multi-slice magnetic resonance images of the fetal brain are usually contaminated by severe and arbitrary fetal and maternal motion. Hence, stable and robust motion correction is necessary to reconstruct high-resolution 3D fetal brain volume for clinical diagnosis and quantitative analysis. However, the conventional registration-based correction has a limited capture range and is insufficient for detecting relatively large motions. Here, we present a novel Affinity Fusion-based Framework for Iteratively Random Motion (AFFIRM) correction of the multi-slice fetal brain MRI. It learns the sequential motion from multiple stacks of slices and integrates the features between 2D slices and reconstructed 3D volume using affinity fusion, which resembles the iterations between slice-to-volume registration and volumetric reconstruction in the regular pipeline. The method accurately estimates the motion regardless of brain orientations and outperforms other state-of-the-art learning-based methods on the simulated motion-corrupted data, with a 48.4% reduction of mean absolute error for rotation and 61.3% for displacement. We then incorporated AFFIRM into the multi-resolution slice-to-volume registration and tested it on the real-world fetal MRI scans at different gestation stages. The results indicated that adding AFFIRM to the conventional pipeline improved the success rate of fetal brain super-resolution reconstruction from 77.2% to 91.9%.

$μ$Dep: Mutation-based Dependency Generation for Precise Taint Analysis on Android Native Code

The existence of native code in Android apps plays an important role in triggering inconspicuous propagation of secrets and circumventing malware detection. However, the state-of-the-art information-flow analysis tools for Android apps all have limited capabilities of analyzing native code. Due to the complexity of binary-level static analysis, most static analyzers choose to build conservative models for a selected portion of native code. Though the recent inter-language analysis improves the capability of tracking information flow in native code, it is still far from attaining similar effectiveness of the state-of-the-art information-flow analyzers that focus on non-native Java methods. To overcome the above constraints, we propose a new analysis framework, $μ$Dep, to detect sensitive information flows of the Android apps containing native code. In this framework, we combine a control-flow based static binary analysis with a mutation-based dynamic analysis to model the tainting behaviors of native code in the apps. Based on the result of the analyses, $μ$Dep conducts a stub generation for the related native functions to facilitate the state-of-the-art analyzer DroidSafe with fine-grained tainting behavior summaries of native code. The experimental results show that our framework is competitive on the accuracy, and effective in analyzing the information flows in real-world apps and malware compared with the state-of-the-art inter-language static analysis.

Resource allocation for reconfigurable intelligent surface aided broadcast channels

A two-user downlink network aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface is considered. The weighted sum signal to interference plus noise ratio maximization and the sum rate maximization models are presented, where the precoding vectors and the RIS matrix are jointly optimized. Since the optimization problem is non-convex and difficult, new approximation models are proposed. The upper bounds of the corresponding objective functions are derived and maximized. Two new algorithms based on the alternating direction method of multiplier are proposed. It is proved that the proposed algorithms converge to the KKT points of the approximation models as long as the iteration points converge. Simulation results show the good performances of the proposed models compared to state of the art algorithms.

ReCFA: Resilient Control-Flow Attestation

Recent IoT applications gradually adapt more complicated end systems with commodity software. Ensuring the runtime integrity of these software is a challenging task for the remote controller or cloud services. Popular enforcement is the runtime remote attestation which requires the end system (prover) to generate evidence for its runtime behavior and a remote trusted verifier to attest the evidence. Control-flow attestation is a kind of runtime attestation that provides diagnoses towards the remote control-flow hijacking at the prover. Most of these attestation approaches focus on small or embedded software. The recent advance to attesting complicated software depends on the source code and CFG traversing to measure the checkpoint-separated subpaths, which may be unavailable for commodity software and cause possible context missing between consecutive subpaths in the measurements. In this work, we propose a resilient control-flow attestation (ReCFA), which does not need the offline measurement of all legitimate control-flow paths, thus scalable to be used on complicated commodity software. Our main contribution is a multi-phase approach to condensing the runtime control-flow events; as a result, the vast amount of control-flow events are abstracted into a deliverable size. The condensing approach consists of filtering skippable call sites, folding program-structure related control-flow events, and a greedy compression. Our approach is implemented with binary-level static analysis and instrumentation. We employ a shadow stack mechanism at the verifier to enforce context-sensitive control-flow integrity and diagnose the compromised control-flow events violating the security policy. The experimental results on real-world benchmarks show both the efficiency of the control-flow condensing and the effectiveness of security enforcement.

Control Parameters Considered Harmful: Detecting Range Specification Bugs in Drone Configuration Modules via Learning-Guided Search

In order to support a variety of missions and deal with different flight environments, drone control programs typically provide configurable control parameters. However, such a flexibility introduces vulnerabilities. One such vulnerability, referred to as range specification bugs, has been recently identified. The vulnerability originates from the fact that even though each individual parameter receives a value in the recommended value range, certain combinations of parameter values may affect the drone physical stability. In this paper we develop a novel learning-guided search system to find such combinations, that we refer to as incorrect configurations. Our system applies metaheuristic search algorithms mutating configurations to detect the configuration parameters that have values driving the drone to unstable physical states. To guide the mutations, our system leverages a machine learning predictor as the fitness evaluator. Finally, by utilizing multi-objective optimization, our system returns the feasible ranges based on the mutation search results. Because in our system the mutations are guided by a predictor, evaluating the parameter configurations does not require realistic/simulation executions. Therefore, our system supports a comprehensive and yet efficient detection of incorrect configurations. We have carried out an experimental evaluation of our system. The evaluation results show that the system successfully reports potentially incorrect configurations, of which over 85% lead to actual unstable physical states.

Sdft: A PDG-based Summarization for Efficient Dynamic Data Flow Tracking

Dynamic taint analysis (DTA) has been widely used in various security-relevant scenarios that need to track the runtime information flow of programs. Dynamic binary instrumentation (DBI) is a prevalent technique in achieving effective dynamic taint tracking on commodity hardware and systems. However, the significant performance overhead incurred by dynamic taint analysis restricts its usage in production systems. Previous efforts on mitigating the performance penalty fall into two categories, parallelizing taint tracking from program execution and abstracting the tainting logic to a higher granularity. Both approaches have only met with limited success. In this work, we propose Sdft, an efficient approach that combines the precision of DBI-based instruction-level taint tracking and the efficiency of function-level abstract taint propagation. First, we build the library function summaries automatically with reachability analysis on the program dependency graph (PDG) to specify the control- and data dependencies between the input parameters, output parameters, and global variables of the target library. Then we derive the taint rules for the target library functions and develop taint tracking for library function that is tightly integrated into the state-of-the-art DTA framework Libdft. By applying our approach to the core C library functions of glibc, we report an average of 1.58x speed up of the tracking performance compared with Libdft64. We also validate the effectiveness of the hybrid taint tracking and the ability on detecting real-world vulnerabilities.

Mobile and IoT applications have greatly enriched our daily life by providing convenient and intelligent services. However, these smart applications have been a prime target of adversaries for stealing sensitive data. It poses a crucial threat to users' identity security, financial security, or even life security. Research communities and industries have proposed many Information Flow Control (IFC) techniques for data leakage detection and prevention, including secure modeling, type system, static analysis, dynamic analysis, \textit{etc}. According to the application's development life cycle, although most attacks are conducted during the application's execution phase, data leakage vulnerabilities have been introduced since the design phase. With a focus on lifecycle protection, this survey reviews the recent representative works adopted in different phases. We propose an information flow based defensive chain, which provides a new framework to systematically understand various IFC techniques for data leakage detection and prevention in Mobile and IoT applications. In line with the phases of the application life cycle, each reviewed work is comprehensively studied in terms of technique, performance, and limitation. Research challenges and future directions are also pointed out by consideration of the integrity of the defensive chain.

Biomedical named entity recognition using BERT in the machine reading comprehension framework

Recognition of biomedical entities from literature is a challenging research focus, which is the foundation for extracting a large amount of biomedical knowledge existing in unstructured texts into structured formats. Using the sequence labeling framework to implement biomedical named entity recognition (BioNER) is currently a conventional method. This method, however, often cannot take full advantage of the semantic information in the dataset, and the performance is not always satisfactory. In this work, instead of treating the BioNER task as a sequence labeling problem, we formulate it as a machine reading comprehension (MRC) problem. This formulation can introduce more prior knowledge utilizing well-designed queries, and no longer need decoding processes such as conditional random fields (CRF). We conduct experiments on six BioNER datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Our method achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on the BC4CHEMD, BC5CDR-Chem, BC5CDR-Disease, NCBI-Disease, BC2GM and JNLPBA datasets, achieving F1-scores of 92.92%, 94.19%, 87.83%, 90.04%, 85.48% and 78.93%, respectively.

Fine with "1234"? An Analysis of SMS One-Time Password Randomness in Android Apps

A fundamental premise of SMS One-Time Password (OTP) is that the used pseudo-random numbers (PRNs) are uniquely unpredictable for each login session. Hence, the process of generating PRNs is the most critical step in the OTP authentication. An improper implementation of the pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) will result in predictable or even static OTP values, making them vulnerable to potential attacks. In this paper, we present a vulnerability study against PRNGs implemented for Android apps. A key challenge is that PRNGs are typically implemented on the server-side, and thus the source code is not accessible. To resolve this issue, we build an analysis tool, \sysname, to assess implementations of the PRNGs in an automated manner without the source code requirement. Through reverse engineering, \sysname identifies the apps using SMS OTP and triggers each app's login functionality to retrieve OTP values. It further assesses the randomness of the OTP values to identify vulnerable PRNGs. By analyzing 6,431 commercially used Android apps downloaded from \tool{Google Play} and \tool{Tencent Myapp}, \sysname identified 399 vulnerable apps that generate predictable OTP values. Even worse, 194 vulnerable apps use the OTP authentication alone without any additional security mechanisms, leading to insecure authentication against guessing attacks and replay attacks.

Chemical-protein Interaction Extraction via Gaussian Probability Distribution and External Biomedical Knowledge

Motivation: The biomedical literature contains a wealth of chemical-protein interactions (CPIs). Automatically extracting CPIs described in biomedical literature is essential for drug discovery, precision medicine, as well as basic biomedical research. Most existing methods focus only on the sentence sequence to identify these CPIs. However, the local structure of sentences and external biomedical knowledge also contain valuable information. Effective use of such information may improve the performance of CPI extraction. Results: In this paper, we propose a novel neural network-based approach to improve CPI extraction. Specifically, the approach first employs BERT to generate high-quality contextual representations of the title sequence, instance sequence, and knowledge sequence. Then, the Gaussian probability distribution is introduced to capture the local structure of the instance. Meanwhile, the attention mechanism is applied to fuse the title information and biomedical knowledge, respectively. Finally, the related representations are concatenated and fed into the softmax function to extract CPIs. We evaluate our proposed model on the CHEMPROT corpus. Our proposed model is superior in performance as compared with other state-of-the-art models. The experimental results show that the Gaussian probability distribution and external knowledge are complementary to each other. Integrating them can effectively improve the CPI extraction performance. Furthermore, the Gaussian probability distribution can effectively improve the extraction performance of sentences with overlapping relations in biomedical relation extraction tasks. Low complexity sum rate maximization for single and multiple stream MIMO AF relay networks

A multiple-antenna amplify-and-forward two-hop interference network with multiple links and multiple relays is considered. We optimize transmit precoders, receive decoders and relay AF matrices to maximize the achievable sum rate. Under per user and total relay sum power constraints, we propose an efficient algorithm to maximize the total signal to total interference plus noise ratio (TSTINR). Computational complexity analysis shows that our proposed algorithm for TSTINR has lower complexity than the existing weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) algorithm. We analyze and confirm by simulations that the TSTINR, WMMSE and the total leakage interference plus noise (TLIN) minimization models with per user and total relay sum power constraints can only transmit a single data stream for each user. Thus we propose a novel multiple stream TSTINR model with requirement of orthogonal columns for precoders, in order to support multiple data streams and thus utilize higher Degrees of Freedom. Multiple data streams and larger multiplexing gains are guaranteed. Simulation results show that for single stream models, our TSTINR algorithm outperforms the TLIN algorithm generally and outperforms WMMSE in medium to high Signal-to-Noise-Ratio scenarios; the system sum rate significantly benefits from multiple data streams in medium to high SNR scenarios.

A New Enforcement on Declassification with Reachability Analysis

Language-based information flow security aims to decide whether an action-observable program can unintentionally leak confidential information if it has the authority to access confidential data. Recent concerns about declassification polices have provided many choices for practical intended information release, but more precise enforcement mechanism for these policies is insufficiently studied. In this paper, we propose a security property on the where-dimension of declassification and present an enforcement based on automated verification. The approach automatically transforms the abstract model with a variant of self-composition, and checks the reachability of illegal-flow state of the model after transformation. The self-composition is equipped with a store-match pattern to reduce the state space and to model the equivalence of declassified expressions in the premise of property. The evaluation shows that our approach is more precise than type-based enforcement.

Secure Information Flow by Model Checking Pushdown System

We propose an approach on model checking information flow for imperative language with procedures. We characterize our model with pushdown system, which has a stack of unbounded length that naturally models the execution of procedural programs. Because the type-based static analysis is sometimes too conservative and rejects safe program as ill-typed, we take a semantic-based approach by self-composing symbolic pushdown system and specifying noninterference with LTL formula. Then we verify this LTL-expressed property via model checker Moped. Except for overcoming the conservative characteristic of type-based approach, our motivation also includes the insufficient state of arts on precise information flow analysis under inter-procedural setting. To remedy the inefficiency of model checking compared with type system, we propose both compact form and contracted form of self-composition. According to our experimental results, they can greatly increase the efficiency of realistic verification. Our method provides flexibility on separating program abstraction from noninterference verification, thus could be expected to use on different programming languages.
