First-Order Quantum Correction in Coherent State Expectation Value of Loop-Quantum-Gravity Hamiltonian

Given the non-graph-changing Hamiltonian $\widehat{H[N]}$ in Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), $\langle\widehat{H[N]}\rangle$, the coherent state expectation value of $\widehat{H[N]}$, admits an semiclassical expansion in $\ell^2_{\rm p}$. In this paper, as presenting the detailed derivations of our previous work arXiv:2012.14242, we explicitly compute the expansion of $\langle\widehat{H[N]}\rangle$ to the linear order in $\ell^2_{\rm p}$ on the cubic graph with respect to the coherent state peaked at the homogeneous and isotropic data of cosmology. In our computation, a powerful algorithm is developed, supported by rigorous proofs and several theorems, to overcome the complexity in the computation of $\langle \widehat{H[N]} \rangle$. Particularly, some key innovations in our algorithm substantially reduce the complexity in computing the Lorentzian part of $\langle\widehat{H[N]}\rangle$. Additionally, some quantum correction effects resulting from $\langle\widehat{H[N]}\rangle$ in cosmology are discussed at the end of this paper.

Reduced Phase Space Quantization of Black Holes: Path Integrals, and Effective Dynamics

We consider the loop quantum theory of the spherically symmetric model of gravity coupled to Gaussian dust fields, where the Gaussian dust fields provide a material reference frame of the space and time to deparameterize gravity. This theory, used to study the quantum features of the spherically symmetric black hole, is constructed based on a 1-dimensional lattice $γ\subset\mathbb R$. Taking advantage of the path integral formulation, we investigate the quantum dynamics and obtain an effective action. With this action, we get an effective continuous description of this quantum lattice system which is not the same as the one described by the effective Hamiltonian used in arXiv:2012.05729, i.e. the classical Hamiltonian with the holonomy correction. It turns out that the Hamiltonian derived in this paper returns that used in arXiv:2012.05729 only for macro black holes since the lattice $γ$ is required to be sufficiently fine. Indeed, it is necessary to propose this fine-grained lattice structure in order to well describe the underlying lattice theory by the continuous description.

Phone-to-audio alignment without text: A Semi-supervised Approach

The task of phone-to-audio alignment has many applications in speech research. Here we introduce two Wav2Vec2-based models for both text-dependent and text-independent phone-to-audio alignment. The proposed Wav2Vec2-FS, a semi-supervised model, directly learns phone-to-audio alignment through contrastive learning and a forward sum loss, and can be coupled with a pretrained phone recognizer to achieve text-independent alignment. The other model, Wav2Vec2-FC, is a frame classification model trained on forced aligned labels that can both perform forced alignment and text-independent segmentation. Evaluation results suggest that both proposed methods, even when transcriptions are not available, generate highly close results to existing forced alignment tools. Our work presents a neural pipeline of fully automated phone-to-audio alignment. Code and pretrained models are available at https://github.com/lingjzhu/charsiu.

Spherical Convolution empowered FoV Prediction in 360-degree Video Multicast with Limited FoV Feedback

Field of view (FoV) prediction is critical in 360-degree video multicast, which is a key component of the emerging Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Most of the current prediction methods combining saliency detection and FoV information neither take into account that the distortion of projected 360-degree videos can invalidate the weight sharing of traditional convolutional networks, nor do they adequately consider the difficulty of obtaining complete multi-user FoV information, which degrades the prediction performance. This paper proposes a spherical convolution-empowered FoV prediction method, which is a multi-source prediction framework combining salient features extracted from 360-degree video with limited FoV feedback information. A spherical convolution neural network (CNN) is used instead of a traditional two-dimensional CNN to eliminate the problem of weight sharing failure caused by video projection distortion. Specifically, salient spatial-temporal features are extracted through a spherical convolution-based saliency detection model, after which the limited feedback FoV information is represented as a time-series model based on a spherical convolution-empowered gated recurrent unit network. Finally, the extracted salient video features are combined to predict future user FoVs. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than other prediction methods.

Polarization measurement for the dileptonic channel of $W^+ W^-$ scattering using generative adversarial network

Measuring the polarization fractions of the $W^+W^-$ scattering reveals the interactions of the Higgs boson as well as new neutral states that are related to the standard model electroweak symmetry breaking. The dileptonic channel has a relatively lower background rate, but the kinematics of its final states can not be fully reconstructed due to the presence of two neutrinos. We propose neural networks to establish maps between the distributions of measurable quantities and the distributions of the lepton angles in $W$ boson rest frames. New physics contributions and collision energy can largely affect the kinematic properties of the $W^+W^-$ scattering beside the lepton angles. To make the network in ignorance of that information, the loss function is modified in two different ways. We show that the networks are promising in reproducing the lepton angle distributions, and the precision of the fitted polarization fractions obtained from network predictions is comparable to that obtained with the truth lepton angle. Although the best-fit values of polarization fractions do not change much after including the background uncertainty, the precisions is substantially reduced. Our trained models are available at GitHub.

Loop quantum Schwarzschild interior and black hole remnant

The interior of Schwarzschild black hole is quantized by the method of loop quantum gravity. The Hamiltonian constraint is solved and the physical Hilbert space is obtained in the model. The properties of a Dirac observable corresponding to the ADM mass of the Schwarzschild black hole are studied by both analytical and numerical techniques. It turns out that zero is not in the spectrum of this Dirac observable. This supports the existence of a stable remnant after the evaporation of a black hole. Our conclusion is valid for a general class of schemes adopted for loop quantization of the model.

Entropy of black holes with arbitrary shapes in loop quantum gravity

The quasi-local notion of an isolated horizon is employed to study the entropy of black holes without any particular symmetry in loop quantum gravity. The idea of characterizing the shape of a horizon by a sequence of local areas is successfully applied in the scheme to calculate the entropy by the $SO(1,1)$ BF boundary theory matching loop quantum gravity in the bulk. The generating function for calculating the microscopical degrees of freedom of a given isolated horizon is obtained. Numerical computations of small black holes indicate a new entropy formula containing the quantum correction related to the partition of the horizon. Further evidence shows that, for a given horizon area, the entropy decreases as a black hole deviates from the spherically symmetric one, and the entropy formula is also well suitable for big black holes.

Applying Phonological Features in Multilingual Text-To-Speech

This study investigates whether phonological features can be applied in text-to-speech systems to generate native and non-native speech in English and Mandarin. We present a mapping of ARPABET/pinyin to SAMPA/SAMPA-SC and then to phonological features. We tested whether this mapping could lead to the successful generation of native, non-native, and code-switched speech in the two languages. We ran two experiments, one with a small dataset and one with a larger dataset. The results proved that phonological features could be used as a feasible input system, although further investigation is needed to improve model performance. The accented output generated by the TTS models also helps with understanding human second language acquisition processes.

Twisted geometry coherent states in all dimensional loop quantum gravity: I. Construction and Peakedness properties

A new family of coherent states for all dimensional loop quantum gravity are proposed, which is based on the generalized twisted geometry parametrization of the phase space of $SO(D+1)$ connection theory. We prove that this family of coherent states provide an over-complete basis of the Hilbert space in which edge simplicity constraint is solved. Moreover, according to our explicit calculation, the expectation values of holonomy and flux operators with respect to this family of coherent states coincide with the corresponding classical values given by the labels of the coherent states, up to some gauge degrees of freedom. Besides, we study the peakedness properties of this family of coherent states, including the peakedness of the wave functions of this family of coherent states in holonomy, momentum and phase space representations. It turns out that the peakedness in these various representations and the (relative) uncertainty of the expectation values of the operators are well controlled by the semi-classical parameter $t$. Therefore, this family of coherent states provide a candidate for the semi-classical analysis of all dimensional loop quantum gravity.

Multi-scalar signature of self-interacting dark matter in the NMSSM and beyond

This work studies the self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) scenario in the general NMSSM and beyond, where the dark matter is a Majorana fermion and the force mediator is a scalar boson. An improved analytical expression for the dark matter (DM) self-interacting cross section which takes into account the Born level effects is proposed. Due to the large couplings and light mediator in SIDM scenario, the DM/mediator will go through multiple branchings if they are produced with high energy. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation of the showers in the DM sector, we obtain the multiplicities and the spectra of the DM/mediator from the Higgsino production and decay at the LHC for our benchmark points.

Loop quantum deparametrized Schwarzschild interior and discrete black hole mass

We present the detailed analyses of a model of loop quantum Schwarzschild interior coupled to a massless scalar field and extend the results in our previous rapid communication arXiv:2006.08313 to more general schemes. It is shown that the spectrum of the black hole mass is discrete and does not contain zero. This indicates the existence of a black hole remnant after Hawking evaporation due to loop quantum gravity effects. Besides to show the existence of a stable black hole remnant in the vacuum case, the quantum dynamics for the non-vacuum case is also solved and compared with the effective one.

Relating spin-foam to canonical loop quantum gravity by graphical calculus

The graphical calculus method is generalized to study the relation between covariant and canonical dynamics of loop quantum gravity. On one hand, a graphical derivation of the partition function of the generalized Euclidean Engle-Pereira-Rovelli-Livine (EPRL) spin-foam model is presented. On the other hand, the action of a Euclidean Hamiltonian constraint operator on certain spin network states is calculated by graphical method. It turns out that the EPRL model can provide a rigging map such that the Hamiltonian constraint operator is weakly satisfied on certain physical states for the Immirzi parameter $β=1$. In this sense, the quantum dynamics between the covariant and canonical formulations are consistent to each other.

Synchronising speech segments with musical beats in Mandarin and English singing

Generating synthesised singing voice with models trained on speech data has many advantages due to the models' flexibility and controllability. However, since the information about the temporal relationship between segments and beats are lacking in speech training data, the synthesised singing may sound off-beat at times. Therefore, the availability of the information on the temporal relationship between speech segments and music beats is crucial. The current study investigated the segment-beat synchronisation in singing data, with hypotheses formed based on the linguistics theories of P-centre and sonority hierarchy. A Mandarin corpus and an English corpus of professional singing data were manually annotated and analysed. The results showed that the presence of musical beats was more dependent on segment duration than sonority. However, the sonority hierarchy and the P-centre theory were highly related to the location of beats. Mandarin and English demonstrated cross-linguistic variations despite exhibiting common patterns.

Comparing acoustic analyses of speech data collected remotely

Face-to-face speech data collection has been next to impossible globally due to COVID-19 restrictions. To address this problem, simultaneous recordings of three repetitions of the cardinal vowels were made using a Zoom H6 Handy Recorder with external microphone (henceforth H6) and compared with two alternatives accessible to potential participants at home: the Zoom meeting application (henceforth Zoom) and two lossless mobile phone applications (Awesome Voice Recorder, and Recorder; henceforth Phone). F0 was tracked accurately by all devices; however, for formant analysis (F1, F2, F3) Phone performed better than Zoom, i.e. more similarly to H6, though data extraction method (VoiceSauce, Praat) also resulted in differences. In addition, Zoom recordings exhibited unexpected drops in intensity. The results suggest that lossless format phone recordings present a viable option for at least some phonetic studies.

Superposition type coherent states in all dimensional loop quantum gravity

We propose a new kind of coherent state for the general $SO(D+1)$ formulation of loop quantum gravity in the $(1+D)$-dimensional space-time. Instead of Thiemann's coherent state for $SO(D+1)$ gauge theory, our coherent spin-network state is given by constructing proper superposition over quantum numbers of the spin-networks with vertices labelled by the coherent intertwiners. Such superposition type coherent states are labelled by the so-called generalized twisted geometric variables which capture the geometric meaning of discretized general relativity. We study the basic properties of this kind of coherent states, i.e., the completeness and peakedness property. Moreover, we show that the superposition type coherent states are consistent with Thiemann's coherent state for $SO(D+1)$ gauge theory in large $η$ limit.

DeepFake-o-meter: An Open Platform for DeepFake Detection

In recent years, the advent of deep learning-based techniques and the significant reduction in the cost of computation resulted in the feasibility of creating realistic videos of human faces, commonly known as DeepFakes. The availability of open-source tools to create DeepFakes poses as a threat to the trustworthiness of the online media. In this work, we develop an open-source online platform, known as DeepFake-o-meter, that integrates state-of-the-art DeepFake detection methods and provide a convenient interface for the users. We describe the design and function of DeepFake-o-meter in this work.

Discovering Clinically Meaningful Shape Features for the Analysis of Tumor Pathology Images

With the advanced imaging technology, digital pathology imaging of tumor tissue slides is becoming a routine clinical procedure for cancer diagnosis. This process produces massive imaging data that capture histological details in high resolution. Recent developments in deep-learning methods have enabled us to automatically detect and characterize the tumor regions in pathology images at large scale. From each identified tumor region, we extracted 30 well-defined descriptors that quantify its shape, geometry, and topology. We demonstrated how those descriptor features were associated with patient survival outcome in lung adenocarcinoma patients from the National Lung Screening Trial (n=143). Besides, a descriptor-based prognostic model was developed and validated in an independent patient cohort from The Cancer Genome Atlas Program program (n=318). This study proposes new insights into the relationship between tumor shape, geometrical, and topological features and patient prognosis. We provide software in the form of R code on GitHub: https://github.com/estfernandez/Slide_Image_Segmentation_and_Extraction.

Bayesian Landmark-based Shape Analysis of Tumor Pathology Images

Medical imaging is a form of technology that has revolutionized the medical field in the past century. In addition to radiology imaging of tumor tissues, digital pathology imaging, which captures histological details in high spatial resolution, is fast becoming a routine clinical procedure for cancer diagnosis support and treatment planning. Recent developments in deep-learning methods facilitate the segmentation of tumor regions at almost the cellular level from digital pathology images. The traditional shape features that were developed for characterizing tumor boundary roughness in radiology are not applicable. Reliable statistical approaches to modeling tumor shape in pathology images are in urgent need. In this paper, we consider the problem of modeling a tumor boundary with a closed polygonal chain. A Bayesian landmark-based shape analysis (BayesLASA) model is proposed to partition the polygonal chain into mutually exclusive segments to quantify the boundary roughness piecewise. Our fully Bayesian inference framework provides uncertainty estimates of both the number and locations of landmarks. The BayesLASA outperforms a recently developed landmark detection model for planar elastic curves in terms of accuracy and efficiency. We demonstrate how this model-based analysis can lead to sharper inferences than ordinary approaches through a case study on the 246 pathology images from 143 non-small cell lung cancer patients. The case study shows that the heterogeneity of tumor boundary roughness predicts patient prognosis (p-value < 0.001). This statistical methodology not only presents a new model for characterizing a digitized object's shape features by using its landmarks, but also provides a new perspective for understanding the role of tumor surface in cancer progression.
