Field-level prediction of mid-plane stress tensor fields in concrete target penetration: a cross-velocity graph neural operator surrogate

Although the impact resistance of concrete has been studied extensively, a framework linking mesoscale heterogeneity to full-field stress-tensor prediction has been lacking. Data were generated with a full-scale aggregate-resolved LS-DYNA model (projectile diameter 45 mm, mass 2.13 kg, target diameter 500 mm x thickness 200 mm, mesh 10 mm), verified against published penetration experiments (Frew 2006, Hanchak 1992, Forrestal 1996) by configuration similarity. The dataset contains six-component stress-tensor fields on the X-Z mid-plane for 400 cases (4 impact velocities x 100 aggregate seeds). Three contributions are reported. First, case-by-case verification of the terminal penetration state delimited the rest-state validity of penetration depth and anchored reliable observables to rigid-body motion and field-level stress evolution. Second, a field-level graph neural operator surrogate learned the time-varying stress-field evolution and evaluated cross-velocity leave-one-out extrapolation. Third, the full-scale, aggregate-resolved, cross-velocity, per-seed database was established as a reproducible resource. Cases at 100, 135 and 200 m/s still moved at window end (negative velocity, i.e. rebound), and only one 165 m/s case arrested. Penetration depth is therefore not reported as a rest-state scalar except for the single arrested case (69.33 mm); nose-node depth differences were confirmed as numerical artifacts of displacement integration after erosion. The single-step relative L2 error was 0.6977, reported honestly; autoregressive rollout from frame 11 to 39 took about 144 ms, a speedup of about 3.6x10^3 to 4.3x10^3 relative to single-core LS-DYNA, reported as application value. Validation is bounded by configuration similarity and field-level self-consistency; the framework is a simulation-trained decision-support method within the studied parameter space.

A Constitutive Markov Physics-Informed Neural Operator (MPNO) for Autoregressive Stability in Transient Dynamics

Neural operators applied to transient-dynamics PDEs with strong discontinuities exhibit autoregressive instability: in concrete-penetration stress-field prediction, the wavelet neural operator (WNO) diverges in autoregressive rollout, while MeshGraphNets collapse to zero predictions. WNO's instability stems from the lack of a structural constraint on the spectral radius of its propagation operator; the Fourier neural operator (FNO) is stable in these measurements but only emergently, not by construction. We propose a constitutive Markov physics-informed neural operator (MPNO) modeling one-step evolution as a Markov (row-stochastic) propagation operator. Physics-coupled edge weights (acoustic-impedance harmonic mean, contact area, and traction amplitude) encode material-interface constitutive information into a nonnegative symmetric adjacency matrix W; after normalizing the graph Laplacian L = D - W by lambda_max, the propagator P = I - alpha*L~ is constructively constrained to spectral radius rho(P) <= 1, suppressing exponential amplification of autoregressive errors. Stability is thus a designable architectural property, not an optimized loss objective. On three PDEs (Burgers and two-dimensional transverse-section concrete penetration), MPNO rolls out stably with bounded error on all test seeds at 100/135/165 m/s; the single-step relative L2 error is 0.7304 +/- 0.0008, better than WNO and comparable to FNO at about one quarter of FNO's parameters. The edge-weight formula transfers across scenarios by replacing material-property variables. With about 20K parameters, MPNO delivers roughly 10^5x inference speedup over LS-DYNA.

Antarctic TianMu Staring Observation Project I: Overview and Implementation of the Prototype Telescope

Wide-field rapid sky surveys serve as critical observational methods for time-domain astronomical research. The Antarctic region, with several months of continuous dark nights annually, is an ideal site for time-domain astronomical observations. The Antarctic TianMu Staring Observation Project aims to deploy a fleet of small telescopes, adopting an array observation model to conduct time-domain optical observations in Antarctica, featuring wide-sky coverage, high-cadence sampling, long-period staring, and simultaneous multi-band measurements. Considering the severe challenges optical telescopes face in Antarctica, including extremely low temperatures, unattended operation, and limited power supply and network transmission, we have designed and developed the Antarctic TianMu prototype telescope based on drift-scan charge-coupled device technology. In October 2022, our prototype (with an aperture of 18 cm), named AT-Proto was transported to Zhongshan Station in Antarctica aboard China's 39th Antarctic Research Expedition. It has since operated stably and reliably in the frigid environment for over two years, demonstrating the significant advantages of this technology in polar astronomical observations. The experimental observation results of AT-Proto provide a solid foundation for the subsequent construction of a time-domain astronomy observation array in Antarctica.

A Study of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Emission in 30 Dor as seen by JWST

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are responsible for strong mid-IR emission features near star-forming regions. It is well known that low-metallicity environments exhibit weaker PAH emission, but it is not clear how the metallicity affects the properties of the emitting PAH population. We present a detailed study of the PAH emission in the low-metallicity regime represented by 30 Dor in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and we compare it to the PAH emission in the Orion Bar to investigate the characteristics of the PAH population and how the environments affects the resulting IR emission. We analyze JWST observations of 30 Dor that include imaging (NIRCam, MIRI) and spectroscopy (NIRSpec/IFU, MIRI/MRS). We extracted NIRSpec/IFU and MIRI/MRS spectra from 18 apertures that cover the morphological structures of 30 Dor. We characterize the profiles and relative intensities of PAH emission in these apertures. The detailed profiles of the PAH emission bands in 30 Dor are all very similar, and compare well to those from one of the dissociation fronts (DF2) in the Orion Bar. The relative band ratios on the other hand show a much larger range than in the Orion Bar. The PAH emission in 30 Dor originates from a population with a higher ionization fraction than in the Orion Bar, and a size distribution that has more smaller PAHs. Since smaller PAHs typically photo-fragment before larger PAHs, our findings support the hypothesis that the lower PAH emission for lower metallicities is the result of inhibition of growth toward larger PAHs rather than photo-fragmentation.

Tianyu: search for the second solar system and explore the dynamic universe

Giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn, play important roles in the formation and habitability of Earth-like planets. The detection of solar system analogs that have multiple cold giant planets is essential for our understanding of planet habitability and planet formation. Although transit surveys such as Kepler and TESS have discovered thousands of exoplanets, these missions are not sensitive to long period planets due to their limited observation baseline. The Tianyu project, comprising two 1-meter telescopes (Tianyu-I and II), is designed to detect transiting cold giant planets in order to find solar system analogs. Featuring a large field of view and equipped with a high-speed CMOS camera, Tianyu-I will perform a high-precision photometric survey of about 100 million stars, measuring light curves at hour-long cadence. The candidates found by Tianyu-I will be confirmed by Tianyu-II and other surveys and follow-up facilities through multi-band photometry, spectroscopy, and high resolution imaging. Tianyu telescopes will be situated at an elevation about 4000 meters in Lenghu, China. With a photometric precision of 1% for stars with V < 18 mag, Tianyu is expected to find more than 300 transiting exoplanets, including about 12 cold giant planets, over five years. A five-year survey of Tianyu would discover 1-2 solar system analogs. Moreover, Tianyu is also designed for non-exoplanetary exploration, incorporating multiple survey modes covering timescales from sub-seconds to months, with a particular emphasis on events occurring within the sub-second to hour range. It excels in observing areas such as infant supernovae, rare variable stars and binaries, tidal disruption events, Be stars, cometary activities, and interstellar objects. These discoveries not only enhance our comprehension of the universe but also offer compelling opportunities for public engagement in scientific exploration.

The Jiao Tong University Spectroscopic Telescope Project

The Jiao Tong University Spectroscopic Telescope (JUST) is a 4.4-meter f/6.0 segmentedmirror telescope dedicated to spectroscopic observations. The JUST primary mirror is composed of 18 hexagonal segments, each with a diameter of 1.1 m. JUST provides two Nasmyth platforms for placing science instruments. One Nasmyth focus fits a field of view of 10 arcmin and the other has an extended field of view of 1.2 deg with correction optics. A tertiary mirror is used to switch between the two Nasmyth foci. JUST will be installed at a site at Lenghu in Qinghai Province, China, and will conduct spectroscopic observations with three types of instruments to explore the dark universe, trace the dynamic universe, and search for exoplanets: (1) a multi-fiber (2000 fibers) medium-resolution spectrometer (R=4000-5000) to spectroscopically map galaxies and large-scale structure; (2) an integral field unit (IFU) array of 500 optical fibers and/or a long-slit spectrograph dedicated to fast follow-ups of transient sources for multimessenger astronomy; (3) a high-resolution spectrometer (R~100000) designed to identify Jupiter analogs and Earth-like planets, with the capability to characterize the atmospheres of hot exoplanets.

DySuse: Susceptibility Estimation in Dynamic Social Networks

Influence estimation aims to predict the total influence spread in social networks and has received surged attention in recent years. Most current studies focus on estimating the total number of influenced users in a social network, and neglect susceptibility estimation that aims to predict the probability of each user being influenced from the individual perspective. As a more fine-grained estimation task, susceptibility estimation is full of attractiveness and practical value. Based on the significance of susceptibility estimation and dynamic properties of social networks, we propose a task, called susceptibility estimation in dynamic social networks, which is even more realistic and valuable in real-world applications. Susceptibility estimation in dynamic networks has yet to be explored so far and is computationally intractable to naively adopt Monte Carlo simulation to obtain the results. To this end, we propose a novel end-to-end framework DySuse based on dynamic graph embedding technology. Specifically, we leverage a structural feature module to independently capture the structural information of influence diffusion on each single graph snapshot. Besides, {we propose the progressive mechanism according to the property of influence diffusion,} to couple the structural and temporal information during diffusion tightly. Moreover, a self-attention block {is designed to} further capture temporal dependency by flexibly weighting historical timestamps. Experimental results show that our framework is superior to the existing dynamic graph embedding models and has satisfactory prediction performance in multiple influence diffusion models.

Fairness-aware Competitive Bidding Influence Maximization in Social Networks

Competitive Influence Maximization (CIM) has been studied for years due to its wide application in many domains. Most current studies primarily focus on the micro-level optimization by designing policies for one competitor to defeat its opponents. Furthermore, current studies ignore the fact that many influential nodes have their own starting prices, which may lead to inefficient budget allocation. In this paper, we propose a novel Competitive Bidding Influence Maximization (CBIM) problem, where the competitors allocate budgets to bid for the seeds attributed to the platform during multiple bidding rounds. To solve the CBIM problem, we propose a Fairness-aware Multi-agent Competitive Bidding Influence Maximization (FMCBIM) framework. In this framework, we present a Multi-agent Bidding Particle Environment (MBE) to model the competitors' interactions, and design a starting price adjustment mechanism to model the dynamic bidding environment. Moreover, we put forward a novel Multi-agent Competitive Bidding Influence Maximization (MCBIM) algorithm to optimize competitors' bidding policies. Extensive experiments on five datasets show that our work has good efficiency and effectiveness.

ET White Paper: To Find the First Earth 2.0

We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.

Surface-bulk coupling in a Bi$_2$Te$_3$ nanoplate grown by van der Waals epitaxy

We report on an experimental study of the effect of coherent surface-bulk electron scattering on quantum transport in a three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ nanoplate. The nanoplate is grown via van der Waals epitaxy on a mica substrate and a top-gated Hall-bar device is fabricated from the nanoplate directly on the growth substrate. Top-gate voltage dependent measurements of the sheet resistance of the device reveal that the transport carriers in the nanoplate are of n-type and that, with decreasing top gate voltage, the carrier density in the nanoplate is decreased. However, the mobility is increased with decreasing top-gate voltage. This mobility increase with decreasing carrier density in the nanoplate is demonstrated to arise from a decrease in bulk-to-surface electron scattering rate. Low-field magnetotransport measurements are performed at low temperatures. The measured magnetoconductivity of the nanoplate shows typical weak anti-localization (WAL) characteristics. We analyze the measurements by taking surface-bulk inter-channel electron scattering into account and extract dephasing times $τ_ϕ$, diffusion coefficients $D$ of electrons at the top surface and in the bulk, and the surface-bulk scattering times $τ_{SB}$ as a function of top-gate voltage and temperature. It is found that the dephasing in the nanoplate arises dominantly from electron-electron scattering with small energy transfers. It is also found that the ratio of $τ_ϕ$/$τ_{SB}$ (a measure of the surface-bulk electron coherent coupling) is decreased with decreasing gate voltage or increasing temperature. We demonstrate that taking the surface-bulk coherent electron scattering in our Bi$_2$Te$_3$ nanoplate into account is essential to understand quantum transport measurements at low temperatures.

Exponentially Weighted l_2 Regularization Strategy in Constructing Reinforced Second-order Fuzzy Rule-based Model

In the conventional Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK)-type fuzzy models, constant or linear functions are usually utilized as the consequent parts of the fuzzy rules, but they cannot effectively describe the behavior within local regions defined by the antecedent parts. In this article, a theoretical and practical design methodology is developed to address this problem. First, the information granulation (Fuzzy C-Means) method is applied to capture the structure in the data and split the input space into subspaces, as well as form the antecedent parts. Second, the quadratic polynomials (QPs) are employed as the consequent parts. Compared with constant and linear functions, QPs can describe the input-output behavior within the local regions (subspaces) by refining the relationship between input and output variables. However, although QP can improve the approximation ability of the model, it could lead to the deterioration of the prediction ability of the model (e.g., overfitting). To handle this issue, we introduce an exponential weight approach inspired by the weight function theory encountered in harmonic analysis. More specifically, we adopt the exponential functions as the targeted penalty terms, which are equipped with l2 regularization (l2) (i.e., exponential weighted l2, ewl_2) to match the proposed reinforced second-order fuzzy rule-based model (RSFRM) properly. The advantage of el 2 compared to ordinary l2 lies in separately identifying and penalizing different types of polynomial terms in the coefficient estimation, and its results not only alleviate the overfitting and prevent the deterioration of generalization ability but also effectively release the prediction potential of the model.
