Exotic phases of interacting p-band bosons

We study a model of interacting bosons that occupy the first excited p-band states of a two-dimensional optical lattice. In contrast to the much studied single band Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, this more complex model allows for non-trivial superfluid phases associated with condensation at non-zero momentum and staggered order of the orbital angular momentum in addition to the superfluid-Mott insulator transition. More specifically, we observe staggered orbital angular momentum order in the Mott phase at commensurate filling and superfluidity at all densities. We also observe a transition between the staggered angular momentum superfluid phase and a striped superfluid, with an alternation of the phase of the superfluid along one direction. The transition between these two phases was observed in a recent experiment, which is then qualitatively well described by our model.

Quantum magnetic properties of the SU(2N) Hubbard model in the square lattice: a quantum Monte Carlo study

We employ the determinant projector quantum Monte-Carlo method to investigate the ground state magnetic properties in the Mott insulating states of the half-filled SU(4) and SU(6) Fermi-Hubbard model in the 2D square lattice, which is free of the sign problem. The long-range antiferromagnetic Neel order is found for the SU(4) case with a small residual Neel moment. Quantum fluctuations are even stronger in the SU(6) case. Numeric results are consistent with either a vanishing or even weaker Neel ordering than that of SU(4).

Mott made easy

The realization of a Mott insulating state in a system of ultracold fermions comprising far more internal components than the electron, provides an avenue for probing many-body physics that is difficult to access in solids.

Frustrated Bose-Einstein condensates with non-collinear orbital ordering

We investigate the unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations (BEC) with the orbital degree of freedom in the 3D cubic optical lattice, which give rise to various exotic features absent in conventional scalar and spinor BECs. Orbital angular momentum moments are formed on lattice sites breaking time-reversal symmetry spontaneously. Furthermore, they exhibit orbital frustrations and develop a chiral ordering selected by the "order-from-disorder" mechanism.

Spin-orbit coupled Fermi liquid theory of ultra-cold magnetic dipolar fermions

We investigate Fermi liquid states of the ultra-cold magnetic dipolar Fermi gases in the simplest two-component case including both thermodynamic instabilities and collective excitations. The magnetic dipolar interaction is invariant under the simultaneous spin-orbit rotation, but not under either the spin or the orbit one. Therefore, the corresponding Fermi liquid theory is intrinsically spin-orbit coupled. This is a fundamental feature of magnetic dipolar Fermi gases different from electric dipolar ones. The Landau interaction matrix is calculated and is diagonalized in terms of the spin-orbit coupled partial-wave channels of the total angular momentum J. The leading thermodynamic instabilities lie in the channels of ferromagnetism hybridized with the ferronematic order with J = 1+ and the spin-current mode with J = 1-, where + and - represent even and odd parities, respectively. An exotic propagating collective mode is identified as spin-orbit coupled Fermi surface oscillations in which spin distribution on the Fermi surface exhibits a topologically nontrivial hedgehog configuration.

The J-triplet Cooper pairing with magnetic dipolar interactions

Recently, cold atomic Fermi gases with the large magnetic dipolar interaction have been laser cooled down to quantum degeneracy. Different from electric-dipoles which are classic vectors, atomic magnetic dipoles are quantum-mechanical matrix operators proportional to the hyperfine-spin of atoms, thus provide rich opportunities to investigate exotic many-body physics. Furthermore, unlike anisotropic electric dipolar gases, unpolarized magnetic dipolar systems are isotropic under simultaneous spin-orbit rotation. These features give rise to a robust mechanism for a novel pairing symmetry: orbital p-wave (L=1) spin triplet (S=1) pairing with total angular momentum of the Cooper pair J=1. This pairing is markedly different from both the $^3$He-B phase in which J=0 and the $^3$He-$A$ phase in which $J$ is not conserved. It is also different from the p-wave pairing in the single-component electric dipolar systems in which the spin degree of freedom is frozen.

2D and 3D topological insulators with isotropic and parity-breaking Landau levels

We investigate topological insulating states in both two and three dimensions with the harmonic potential and strong spin-orbit couplings breaking the inversion symmetry. Landau-level like quantizations appear with the full 2D and 3D rotational symmetry and time-reversal symmetry. Inside each band, states are labeled by their angular momenta over which energy dispersions are strongly suppressed by spin-orbit coupling to nearly flat. The radial quantization generates energy gaps between neighboring bands at the order of the harmonic frequency. Helical edge or surface states appear on open boundaries characterized by the Z2 index. These Hamiltonians can be viewed from the dimensional reduction of the high dimensional quantum Hall states in 3D and 4D flat spaces. These states can be realized with ultra-cold fermions inside harmonic traps with the synthetic gauge fields.

Isotropic Landau levels of Dirac fermions in high dimensions

We generalize the Landau levels of two-dimensional Dirac fermions to three dimensions and above with the full rotational symmetry. Similarly to the two-dimensional case, there exists a branch of zero energy Landau levels of fractional fermion modes for the massless Dirac fermions. The spectra of other Landau levels distribute symmetrically with respect to the zero energy scaling with the square root of the Landau-level indices. This mechanism is a nonminimal coupling of Dirac fermions to the background fields. This high dimensional relativistic Landau-level problem is a square-root problem of its previous studied nonrelativistic version investigated in Li and Wu [arXiv:1103.5422 (2011)].

Anisotropic vortex lattice structures in the FeSe superconductor

In the recent work by Song et al. [Science 332, 1410 (2011)], the scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiment in the stoichiometric FeSe reveals evidence for nodal superconductivity and strong anisotropy. The nodal structure can be explained with the extended s-wave pairing structure with the mixture of the $s_{x^2+y^2}$ and $s_{x^2y^2}$ pairing symmetries. We calculate the anisotropic vortex structure by using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean-field theory. In considering the absence of magnetic ordering in the FeSe at the ambient pressure, orbital ordering is introduced, which breaks the $C_4$ lattice symmetry down to $C_2$, to explain the anisotropy in the vortex tunneling spectra.

Confinement: a real-time visualization

Due to the mechanism of confinement, as known from quantum chromodynamics, it is difficult to observe individual particles carrying fractional quantum number (e.g. quark with fractional electric charge). A condensed matter example of fractionalized particles is spinons in quasi-one-dimensional spin systems, which are domain walls in the background of Neel configurations carrying spin-1/2. Using the time-evolving block decimation algorithm, we visualize the nontrivial domain wall dynamics induced by the confine mechanism in a two-leg spin-1/2 ladder. It can be illustrated by a simple single-particle picture of Bloch oscillation, not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. We propose the experimental realization and the real time detection of the domain wall dynamics in the ultra-cold boson systems of $^{87}$Rb.

Orbital ice: an exact Coulomb phase on the diamond lattice

We demonstrate the existence of orbital Coulomb phase as the exact ground state of p-orbital exchange Hamiltonian on the diamond lattice. The Coulomb phase is an emergent state characterized by algebraic dipolar correlations and a gauge structure resulting from local constraints (ice rules) of the underlying lattice models. For most ice models on the pyrochlore lattice, these local constraints are a direct consequence of minimizing the energy of each individual tetrahedron. On the contrary, the orbital ice rules are emergent phenomena resulting from the quantum orbital dynamics. We show that the orbital ice model exhibits an emergent geometrical frustration by mapping the degenerate quantum orbital ground states to the spin-ice states obeying the 2-in-2-out constraints on the pyrochlore lattice. We also discuss possible realization of the orbital ice model in optical lattices with p-band fermionic cold atoms.

Particle-hole symmetry and interaction effects in the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model

We prove that the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with purely imaginary next-nearest-neighbor hoppings has a particle-hole symmetry at half-filling. Such a symmetry has interesting consequences including the absence of charge and spin currents along open edges, and the absence of the sign problem in the determinant quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. Consequentially, the interplay between band topology and strong correlations can be studied at high numeric precisions. The process that the topological band insulator evolves into the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator as increasing interaction strength is studied by calculating both the bulk and edge electronic properties. In agreement with previous theory analyses, the numeric simulations show that the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model exhibits three phases as increasing correlation effects: the topological band insulating phase with stable helical edges, the bulk paramagnetic phase with unstable edges, and the bulk antiferromagnetic phase.

Vortex structures of rotating spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider the quasi-2D two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a rotating trap. An external Zeeman term favoring spin polarization along the radial direction is also considered, which has the same form as the non-canonical part of the mechanical angular momentum. The rotating condensate exhibits rich structures as varying the strengths of trapping potential and interaction. With a strong trapping potential, the condensate exhibits a half-quantum vortex-lattice configuration. Such a configuration is driven to the normal one by introducing the external radial Zeeman field. In the case of a weak trap potential, the condensate exhibits a multi-domain pattern of plane-wave states under the external radial Zeeman field.

Phase-Sensitive Detection for Unconventional Bose-Einstein Condensations

We propose a phase-sensitive detection scheme to identify the unconventional $p_{x}\pm ip_{y}$ symmetry of the condensate wavefunctions of bosons, which have already been proposed and realized in high bands in optical lattices. Using the impulsive Raman operation combining with time-of-flight imaging, the off-diagonal correlation functions in momentum space give rise to the relative phase information between different components of condensate wavefunctions. This scheme is robust against the interaction and interband effects, and provides smoking gun evidence for unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations with nontrivial condensation symmetries.

Unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations from spin-orbit coupling

According to the "no-node" theorem, many-body ground state wavefunctions of conventional Bose-Einstein condensations (BEC) are positive-definite, thus time-reversal symmetry cannot be spontaneously broken. We find that multi-component bosons with spin-orbit coupling provide an unconventional type of BECs beyond this paradigm. We focus on the subtle case of isotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the spin-independent interaction. In the limit of the weak confining potential, the condensate wavefunctions are frustrated at the Hartree-Fock level due to the degeneracy of the Rashba ring. Quantum zero-point energy selects the spin-spiral type condensate through the "order-from-disorder" mechanism. In a strong harmonic confining trap, the condensate spontaneously generates a half-quantum vortex combined with the skyrmion type of spin texture. In both cases, time-reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken. These phenomena can be realized in both cold atom systems with artificial spin-orbit couplings generated from atom-laser interactions and exciton condensates in semi-conductor systems.

Complex and real unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations in high orbital bands

We perform the theoretical study on the unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations (UBEC) in the high bands of optical lattices observed by Hemmerich's group. These exotic states are characterized by complex-valued condensate wavefunctions with nodal points, or real-valued ones with nodal lines, thus are beyond the {\it "no-node"} paradigm of the conventional BECs. A quantum phase transition is driven by the competition between the single particle band and interaction energies. The complex UBECs spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry, exhibiting a vortex-antivortex lattice structure.

Stable Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing states in 2D and 3D optical lattices

We present the study of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing states in the $p$-orbital bands in both two and three-dimensional optical lattices. Due to the quasi one-dimensional band structure which arises from the unidirectional hopping of the orthogonal $p$-orbitals, the pairing phase space is not affected by spin imbalance. Furthermore, interactions build up high dimensional phase coherence which stabilizes the FFLO states in 2D and 3D optical lattices in a large parameter regime in phase diagram. These FFLO phases are stable with imposing the inhomogeneous trapping potential. Their entropies are comparable to those of the normal states at finite temperatures.
