IFlowNets: Extending Generative Samplers to Learn Strategies in Incomplete Information Games

While many algorithms blend reinforcement learning (RL) with counterfactual regret (CFR) methods to leverage tradeoffs in computational speed and performance, there are fewer investigations into generative sampling frameworks in game theoretic applications in incomplete information games. We extend a generative flow network framework, Adversarial Flow Networks (AFlowNets), to incomplete information games, called Information Flow Networks (IFNs). We prove that previously established constraints for generative flow networks in complete information games are inadmissible for obtaining valid densities (corresponding to player strategies) and a valid training objective. We show that our proposed generalization, IFlowNets, alleviates this issue and strictly generalizes AFlowNets. In preliminary results for three standard game environments, IFlowNets perform comparably to or better than Outcome Sampling Monte Carlo Counterfactual Regret (OSMCCFR) and standard RL-based methods in performance and speed.

Control-affine Schrödinger Bridge and Generalized Bohm Potential

The control-affine Schrödinger bridge concerns with a stochastic optimal control problem. Its solution is a controlled evolution of joint state probability density subject to a control-affine Itô diffusion with a given deadline connecting a given pair of initial and terminal densities. In this work, we recast the necessary conditions of optimality for the control-affine Schrödinger bridge problem as a two point boundary value problem for a quantum mechanical Schrödinger PDE with complex potential. This complex-valued potential is a generalization of the real-valued Bohm potential in quantum mechanics. Our derived potential is akin to the optical potential in nuclear physics where the real part of the potential encodes elastic scattering (transmission of wave function), and the imaginary part encodes inelastic scattering (absorption of wave function). The key takeaway is that the process noise that drives the evolution of probability densities induces an absorbing medium in the evolution of wave function. These results make new connections between control theory and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics through the lens of quantum mechanics.

A resource-constrained stochastic scheduling algorithm for homeless street outreach and gleaning edible food

We developed a common algorithmic solution addressing the problem of resource-constrained outreach encountered by social change organizations with different missions and operations: Breaking Ground -- an organization that helps individuals experiencing homelessness in New York transition to permanent housing and Leket -- the national food bank of Israel that rescues food from farms and elsewhere to feed the hungry. Specifically, we developed an estimation and optimization approach for partially-observed episodic restless bandits under $k$-step transitions. The results show that our Thompson sampling with Markov chain recovery (via Stein variational gradient descent) algorithm significantly outperforms baselines for the problems of both organizations. We carried out this work in a prospective manner with the express goal of devising a flexible-enough but also useful-enough solution that can help overcome a lack of sustainable impact in data science for social good.
