Quark transverse charge densities in the $Δ(1232)$ from lattice QCD

We extend the formalism relating electromagnetic form factors to transverse quark charge densities in the light-front frame to the case of a spin-3/2 baryon and calculate these transverse densities for the $Δ(1232)$ isobar using lattice QCD. The transverse charge densities for a transversely polarized spin-3/2 particle are characterized by monopole, dipole, quadrupole, and octupole patterns representing the structure beyond that of a pure point-like spin-3/2 particle. We present lattice QCD results for the $Δ$-isobar electromagnetic form factors for pion masses down to approximatively 350 MeV for three cases: quenched QCD, two-degenerate flavors of dynamical Wilson quarks, and three flavors of quarks using a mixed action that combines domain wall valence quarks and dynamical staggered sea quarks. We extract transverse quark charge densities from these lattice results and find that the $Δ$ is prolately deformed, as indicated by the fact that the quadrupole moment $G_{E2}(0$) is larger than the value -3 characterizing a point particle and the fact that the transverse charge density in a $Δ^+$ of maximal transverse spin projection is elongated along the axis of the spin.

Nucleon form factors with dynamical twisted mass fermions

The electromagnetic and axial form factors of the nucleon are evaluated in twisted mass QCD with two degenerate flavors of light, dynamical quarks. The axial charge g_A, magnetic moment and the Dirac and Pauli radii are determined for pion masses in the range 300 MeV to 500 MeV.

A Study of Hadron Deformation in Lattice QCD

We develop the formalism for the evaluation of density-density correlators in lattice QCD that includes techniques for the computation of the all-to-all propagators involved. A novel technique in this context is the implementation of the one-end trick in the meson sector. Density-density correlators provide a gauge invariant definition for the hadron wave function and yield information on hadron deformation. We evaluate density-density correlators using two degenerate flavors of dynamical Wilson fermions for the pion, the rho-meson, the nucleon and the $Δ$. Using the one-end trick we obtain results that clearly show deformation of the rho-meson.

Electromagnetic form factors of the Delta baryon

We develop a methodology that enables us to extract accurately the electromagnetic Delta form factors and their momentum dependence. We test our approach in the quenched approximation as a preparation for a study using dynamical fermions. Our calculation of the four form factors covers pion masses between about 410 MeV and 560 MeV on lattices with a size of 2.9 fm and a lattice spacing 0.09 fm. From the form factors we are able to obtain estimates of the magnetic moment and the charge radius of the Delta, which we compare to existing experimental and theoretical results. Our non-zero result for the electric quadrupole form factor signals a deformation of the Delta, pointing to an oblate charge distribution.

Pion and $ρ$-meson form factors using four-point functions in N$_F$=2 QCD

Hadron wave functions and form factors can be extracted using four-point correlators. Stochastic techniques are used to estimate the all to all propagators, which are required for the exact calculation of four-point functions. We apply the so called one-end trick to evaluate meson four-point functions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique in the case of the pion and the $ρ$-meson where we extract their charge distribution, as well as the form factors.

Baryon masses with dynamical twisted mass fermions

We present results on the mass of the nucleon and the $Δ$ using two dynamical degenerate twisted mass quarks. The evaluation is performed at four quark masses corresponding to a pion mass in the range of 690-300 MeV on lattices of size 2.1 fm and 2.7 fm. We check for cutoff effects by evaluating these baryon masses on lattices of spatial size 2.1 fm with lattice spacings $a(β=3.9)=0.0855(6)$ fm and $a(β=4.05)=0.0666(6)$ fm, determined from the pion sector and find them to be within our statistical errors. Lattice results are extrapolated to the physical limit using continuum chiral perturbation theory. The nucleon mass at the physical point provides a determination of the lattice spacing. Using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory at ${\cal O}(p^3)$ we find $a(β=3.9)=0.0879(12)$ fm, with a systematic error due to the chiral extrapolation estimated to be about the same as the statistical error. This value of the lattice spacing is in good agreement with the value determined from the pion sector. We check for isospin breaking in the $Δ$-system. We find that $Δ^{++,-}$ and $Δ^{+,0}$ are almost degenerate pointing to small flavor violating effects.

The N to $Δ$ axial transition form factors in quenched and unquenched QCD

The four N to $Δ$ axial transition form factors are evaluated using quenched QCD, using two flavors of dynamical Wilson fermions and using domain wall valence fermions on three-flavor MILC configurations for pion masses down to 360 MeV. We provide a prediction for the parity violating asymmetry as a function of $Q^2$ and examine the validity of the non-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation.

A study of the N to Delta transition form factors in full QCD

The N to Delta transition form factors GM1, GE2 and GC2 are evaluated using dynamical MILC configurations and valence domain wall fermions at three values of quark mass corresponding to pion mass 606 MeV, 502 MeV and 364 MeV on lattices of spatial size $20^3$ and $28^3$. The unquenched results are compared to those obtained at similar pion mass in the quenched theory.

Density-density correlators using all-to-all propagators

We present a study of gauge invariant density-density correlators. Density-density correlators probe hadron wave functions and thus can be used to study hadron deformation. Their zero momentum projection requires the computation of all-to-all propagators, which are evaluated with the standard stochastic technique, the dilution method and the stochastic sequential technique. We compare the results to a previous analysis that did not employ the zero momentum projection.

The volume dependence of spectral weights and the pentaquark state

Before studying the pentaquark system we examine the spectral weights of the two lowest scattering states in the two-pion system in the isospin I=2 channel on lattices of size $16^3\times 32$, $24^3 \times 32$ and $32^3 \times 64$ at $β=6.0$ in the quenched theory. We find that the spectral weights scale with the volume for large time separations. Therefore very accurate data are necessary in order that the spectral weights determined on different volumes yield a ratio that is precise enough to distinguish a scattering state from a single particle state. The pentaquark system is studied on the same lattices and scaling of the spectral weights of the low lying state is investigated. The accuracy of the results obtained for the scaling of spectral weights do not allow us to exclude a pentaquark resonance.

Chaotic scattering from pinball machine like systems

We study a model inspired by the pinball machine involving chaotic scattering of particles on hard disks with inelasticity. This system exhibits sensitivity not only on the initial conditions of the scattering point particle but also on the external force produced by the pinballs. The deflection function shows fractal structure with regions of wild oscillations which are exponentially compressed as a function of the force exerted by the hard disks. The chaotic properties of the repeller, such as the scaling of the fractal dimension, the Lyapunov exponents and the pressure function, are studied for different geometric configurations.

The Deconfinement Phase Transition in One-Flavour QCD

We present a study of the deconfinement phase transition of one-flavour QCD, using the multiboson algorithm. The mass of the Wilson fermions relevant for this study is moderately large and the non-hermitian multiboson method is a superior simulation algorithm. Finite size scaling is studied on lattices of size $8^3\times 4$, $12^3\times 4$ and $16^3\times 4$. The behaviours of the peak of the Polyakov loop susceptibility, the deconfinement ratio and the distribution of the norm of the Polyakov loop are all characteristic of a first-order phase transition for heavy quarks. As the quark mass decreases, the first-order transition gets weaker and turns into a crossover. To investigate finite size scaling on larger spatial lattices we use an effective action in the same universality class as QCD. This effective action is constructed by replacing the fermionic determinant with the Polyakov loop identified as the most relevant Z(3) symmetry breaking term. Higher-order effects are incorporated in an effective Z(3)-breaking field, $h$, which couples to the Polyakov loop. Finite size scaling determines the value of $h$ where the first order transition ends. Our analysis at the end - point, $h_{ep}$, indicates that the effective model and thus QCD is consistent with the universality class of the three dimensional Ising model. Matching the field strength at the end point, $h_{ep}$, to the $κ$ values used in the dynamical quark simulations we estimate the end point, $κ_{ep}$, of the first-order phase transition. We find $κ_{ep}\sim 0.08 $ which corresponds to a quark mass of about 1.4 GeV .
