In-Gap Band Formation in a Periodically Driven Charge Density Wave Insulator

Periodically driven quantum many-body systems host unconventional behavior not realized at equilibrium. Here we investigate such a setup for strongly interacting spinless fermions on a chain, which at zero temperature and strong interactions form a charge density wave insulator. Using unbiased numerical matrix product state methods for time-dependent spectral functions, we find that driving of the correlated charge-density wave insulator leads not only to a renormalization of the excitation spectrum as predicted by an effective Floquet Hamiltonian, but also to a cosine-like in-gap feature. This is not obtained for a charge density wave model without interactions. A mean-field treatment provides a partial explanation in terms of doublon excitations. However, the full picture needs to take into account strong correlation effects.

Formation of spinful dark excitons in Hubbard systems with magnetic superstructures

The possibility to form excitons in photoilluminated correlated materials is central from fundamental and application oriented perspectives. In this paper we show how the interplay of electron-electron interactions and a magnetic superstructure leads to the formation of a peculiar spinful dark exciton, which can be detected in ARPES-type experiments and optical measurements. We study this by using matrix product states (MPS) to compute the time evolution of single-particle spectral functions and of the optical conductivity following an electron-hole excitation in a class of one-dimensional correlated band-insulators, simulated by Hubbard models with on-site interactions and alternating local magnetic fields. An excitation in only one specific spin direction leads to an additional band in the gap region of the spectral function only in the spin direction unaffected by the excitation and to an additional peak in the optical conductivity. As both is formed only after the excitation, this is interpreted as a dark exciton, which shows only in one spin direction. Recombination of the excitation happens on much longer time scales than the ones amenable to MPS. We discuss implications for experimental studies in correlated insulator systems.

Formation of Spatial Patterns by Spin-selective Excitations of Interacting Fermions

We describe the formation of charge- and spin-density patterns induced by spin-selective photoexcitations of interacting fermionic systems in the presence of a microstructure. As an example, we consider a one-dimensional Hubbard-like system with a periodic magnetic microstructure, which has a uniform charge distribution in its ground state, and in which a long-lived charge-density pattern is induced by the spin-selective photoexcitation. Using tensor-network methods, we study the full quantum dynamics in the presence of electron-electron interactions and identify doublons as the main decay channel for the induced charge pattern. Our setup is compared to the OISTR mechanism, in which ultrafast optically induced spin transfer in Heusler and magnetic compounds is associated to the difference of the local density of states of the different elements in the alloys. We find that applying a spin-selective excitation there induces spatially periodic patterns in local observables. Implications for pump-probe experiments on correlated materials and experiments with ultracold gases on optical lattices are discussed.
