Bianisotropic route to the realization and matching of backward-wave metamaterial slabs

A concept of backward-wave bianisotropic composite medium matched to free space is suggested. It is based on the use of a uniaxial bianisotropic structure embedded into a matrix with negative effective permittivity. Since bianisotropy is easier to achieve in the optical range than artificial magnetism, this concept is prospective for optical backward-wave metamaterials. As an example of possible realizations, a microwave Omega-composite combined with a wire lattice is analytically studied.

Sub-wavelength imaging at infrared frequencies using an array of metallic nanorods

We demonstrate that an array of metallic nanorods enables sub-wavelength (near-field) imaging at infrared frequencies. Using an homogenization approach, it is theoretically proved that under certain conditions the incoming radiation can be transmitted by the array of nanorods over a significant distance with fairly low attenuation. The propagation mechanism does not involve a resonance of material parameters and thus the resolution is not strongly affected by material losses and has wide bandwidth. The sub-wavelength imaging with $λ/10$ resolution by silver rods at 30 THz is demonstrated numerically using full-wave electromagnetic simulator.

Local constitutive parameters of metamaterials

The reason of the non-locality of constitutive (material) parameters extracted in a usual way from the reflection-transmission coefficients of composite slab at moderately low frequencies is explained. The physical meaning of these parameters is clarified. Local constitutive parameters of metamaterial lattices are discussed and their existence at moderate frequencies is demonstrated. It is shown how to extract local material parameters from the dispersion characteristics of an infinite lattice and from reflection and transmission coefficients of metamaterial layers.

Boundary conditions for interfaces of electromagnetic (photonic) crystals and generalized Ewald-Oseen extinction principle

The problem of plane-wave diffraction on semi-infinite orthorhombic electromagnetic (photonic) crystals of general kind is considered. Boundary conditions are obtained in the form of infinite system of equations relating amplitudes of incident wave, eigenmodes excited in the crystal and scattered spatial harmonics. Generalized Ewald-Oseen extinction principle is formulated on the base of deduced boundary conditions. The knowledge of properties of infinite crystal's eigenmodes provides option to solve the diffraction problem for the corresponding semi-infinite crystal numerically. In the case when the crystal is formed by small inclusions which can be treated as point dipolar scatterers with fixed direction the problem admits complete rigorous analytical solution. The amplitudes of excited modes and scattered spatial harmonics are expressed in terms of the wave vectors of the infinite crystal by closed-form analytical formulae. The result is applied for study of reflection properties of metamaterial formed by cubic lattice of split-ring resonators.

Subwavelength metallic waveguides loaded by uniaxial resonant scatterers

The dispersion properties of rectangular metallic waveguides periodically loaded by uniaxial resonant scatterers are studied with help of an analytical theory based on the local field approach, the dipole approximation and the method of images. The cases of both magnetic and electric uniaxial scatterers with both longitudinal and transverse orientations with respect to the waveguide axis are considered. It is shown that in all considered cases waveguides support propagating modes below cutoff of the hollow waveguide within some frequency bands near the resonant frequency of the individual scatterers. The modes are forward ones except the case of transversely oriented magnetic scatterers when the mode turns out to be backward. The described effects can be applied for the miniaturization of the guiding structures.

On homogenization of electromagnetic crystals formed by uniaxial resonant scatterers

Dispersion properties of electromagnetic crystals formed by small uniaxial resonant scatterers (magnetic or electric) are studied using the local field approach. The goal of the study is to determine the conditions under which the homogenization of such crystals can be made. Therefore the consideration is limited by the frequency region where the wavelength in the host medium is larger than the lattice periods. It is demonstrated that together with known restriction for the homogenization related with the large values of the material parameters there is an additional restriction related with their small absolute values. From the other hand, the homogenization becomes allowed in both cases of large and small material parameters for special directions of propagation. Two unusual effects inherent to the crystals under consideration are revealed: flat isofrequency contour which allows subwavelength imaging using canalization regime and birefringence of extraordinary modes which can be used for beam splitting.

Frequency range and explicit expressions for negative permittivity and permeability for an isotropic medium formed by a lattice of perfectly conducting $Ω$ particles

An analytical model is presented for a rectangular lattice of isotropic scatterers with electric and magnetic resonances. Each isotropic scatterer is formed by putting appropriately 6 $Ω$-shaped perfectly conducting particles on the faces of a cubic unit cell. A self-consistent dispersion equation is derived and then used to calculate correctly the effective permittivity and permeability in the frequency band where the lattice can be homogenized. The frequency range in which both the effective permittivity and permeability are negative corresponds to the mini-band of backward waves within the resonant band of the individual isotropic scatterer.
