Relative systoles in hyperelliptic translation surfaces

In this paper we prove that the systole fonction on a connected component of area one translation surfaces admits a local maximum that is not a global maximum if and only if the connected component is not hyperelliptic.

The automorphism group of Rauzy diagrams

We give a description of the automorphism group of a Rauzy diagram as a subgroup of the symmetric group. This is based on an example that appear in some personnal notes of Yoccoz that are to be published in the project ''Yoccoz archives''.

Systoles in translation surfaces

For a translation surface, we define the systole to be the length of the shortest saddle connection. We give a characterization of the maxima of the systole function on a stratum, and give a family of examples providing local but nonglobal maxima on each stratum of genus at least three. We further study the relation between (locally) maximal values of the systole function and the number of shortest saddle connections.

Geodesic length spectrum of hyperelliptic connected components

We propose a general framework for studying pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms on translation surfaces. This new approach, among other consequences, allows us to compute the systole of the Teichmueller geodesic flow restricted to the hyperelliptic connected components, settling a question of Farb. We stress that all proofs and computations are performed without the help of a computer. As a byproduct, our methods give a way to describe the bottom of the lengths spectrum of the hyperelliptic components.

Moduli space of meromorphic differentials with marked horizontal separatrices

We study framed translation surfaces corresponding to meromorphic differentials on compact Riemann surfaces, for which a horizontal separatrix is marked for each pole or zero. Such geometric structures naturally appear when studying flat geometry surfaces "near" the Deligne-Mumford boundary.We compute the number of connected components of the corresponding strata, and give a simple topological invariant that distinguishes them. In particular we see that for $g>0$, there are at most two such components, except in the hyperelliptic case.

A combinatorial move on the set of Jenkins-Strebel differentials

We describe an elementary combinatorial move on the set of quadratic differentials with a horizontal one cylinder decom-position. Computer experiment suggests that the corresponding equivalent classes are in one-to-one correspondence with the con-nected component of the strata.

Connected components of the strata of the moduli space of meromorphic differentials

In this paper, we study the translation surfaces corresponding to meromorphic differentials on compact Riemann surfaces. We compute the number of connected components of the corresponding strata of the moduli space. We show that in genus greater than or equal to two, one has up to three components with a similar description as the one of Kontsevich and Zorich for the moduli space of Abelian differentials. In genus one, one can obtain an arbitrarily large number of connected components that are easily distinghished by a simple topological invariant.

Labeled Rauzy classes and framed translation surfaces

In this paper, we compare two definitions of Rauzy classes. The first one was introduced by Rauzy and was in particular used by Veech to prove the ergodicity of the Teichm\"uller flow. The second one is more recent and uses a "labeling" of the underlying intervals, and was used in the proof of some recent major results about the Teichm\"uller flow. The Rauzy diagrams obtained from the second definition are coverings of the initial ones. In this paper, we give a formula that gives the degree of this covering. This formula is related to moduli spaces of "framed" translation surfaces, which corresponds to surfaces where we label horizontal separatrices on the surface. We compute the number of connected component of these natural coverings of the moduli spaces of translation surfaces. Delecroix proved recently a recursive formula for the cardinality of the (reduced) Rauzy classes. Therefore, we also obtain a formula for labeled Rauzy classes.

Pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms on translation surfaces in hyperelliptic components have large entropy

We prove that the dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on a translation surface that belong to a hyperelliptic component is bounded from below uniformly by sqrt{2}. This is in contrast to Penner's asymptotic. Penner proved that the logarithm of the least dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on a surface of genus g tends to zero at rate 1/g (as g goes to infinity). We also show that our uniform lower bound sqrt{2} is sharp. More precisely the least dilatation of a pseudo-Anosov on a genus g>1 translation surface in a hyperelliptic component belongs to the interval ]sqrt{2},sqrt{2}+2^{1-g}[. The proof uses the Rauzy-Veech induction.

Ends of strata of the moduli space of quadratic differentials

Very few results are known about the topology of the strata of the moduli space of quadratic differentials. In this paper, we prove that any connected component of such strata has only one topological end. A typical flat surface in a neighborhood of the boundary is naturally split by a collection of parallel short saddle connections, but the discrete data associated to this splitting can be quite difficult to describe. In order to bypass these difficulties, we use the Veech zippered rectangles construction and the corresponding (extended) Rauzy classes.

Classification of Rauzy classes in the moduli space of quadratic differentials

We study relations between Rauzy classes coming from an interval exchange map and the corresponding connected components of strata of the moduli space of Abelian differentials. This gives a criterion to decide whether two permutations are in the same Rauzy class or not, without actually computing them. We prove a similar result for Rauzy classes corresponding to quadratic differentials.

Dynamics and geometry of the Rauzy-Veech induction for quadratic differentials

Interval exchange maps are related to geodesic flows on translation surfaces; they correspond to the first return maps of the vertical flow on a transverse segment. The Rauzy-Veech induction on the space of interval exchange maps provides a powerful tool to analyze the Teichmueller geodesic flow on the moduli space of Abelian differentials. Several major results have been proved using this renormalization. Danthony and Nogueira introduced in 1988 a natural generalization of interval exchange transformations, namely the linear involutions. These maps are related to general measured foliations on surfaces (orientable or not). In this paper we are interested by such maps related to geodesic flow on (orientable) flat surfaces with Z/2Z linear holonomy. We relate geometry and dynamics of such maps to the combinatorics of generalized permutations. We study an analogue of the Rauzy-Veech induction and give an efficient combinatorial characterization of its attractors. We establish a natural bijection between the extended Rauzy classes of generalized permutations and connected components of the strata of meromorphic quadratic differentials with at most simple poles, which allows, in particular, to classify the connected components of all exceptional strata.

Configurations of saddle connections of quadratic differentials on CP1 and on hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces

Configurations of rigid collections of saddle connections are connected component invariants for strata of the moduli space of quadratic differentials. They have been classified for strata of Abelian differentials by Eskin, Masur and Zorich. Similar work for strata of quadratic differentials has been done in Masur and Zorich, although in that case the connected components were not distinguished. We classify the configurations for quadratic differentials on the Riemann sphere and on hyperelliptic connected components of the moduli space of quadratic differentials. We show that, in genera greater than five, any configuration that appears in the hyperelliptic connected component of a stratum also appears in the non-hyperelliptic one.

Degenerations of quadratic differentials on CP1

We describe the connected components of the complement of a natural "diagonal" of real codimension 1 in a stratum of quadratic differentials on CP1. We establish a natural bijection between the set of these connected components and the set of generic configurations that appear on such "flat spheres". We also prove that the stratum has only one topological end. Finally, we elaborate a necessary toolkit destined to evaluation of the Siegel-Veech constants.
