Bose-Hubbard simulator with long-range hopping

Enriching condensed-matter systems with quantum optical phenomena currently drives intense research efforts, particularly to introduce collective quantum correlations. Here we access this paradigm, by confining dipolar excitons in a nanoscopic lattice where long-range hopping, and nearest-neighbour dipolar repulsions, dress the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. Long-range hopping is evidenced by the spontaneous buildup of many-body sub-radiance, signalled by an algebraic slowdown of excitons radiative dissipation. In addition, we observe a threshold increase of temporal coherence for dipolar quantum solids only. It suggests that excitons condense in a single sub-radiant state for Mott-like phases. These combine then spatial order and collectively extended coherence, in a single degree of freedom. Our study unveils that nanoscopic exciton arrays provide a unique platform to design new frontiers of strongly-correlated lattice models with long-range correlations.

Collecting single photons from a cavity-coupled quantum dot using an adiabatic tapered fiber

We demonstrate efficient in-plane optical fiber collection of single photon emission from quantum dots embedded in photonic crystal cavities. This was achieved via adiabatic coupling between a tapered optical fiber and a tapered on-chip photonic waveguide coupled to the photonic crystal cavity. The collection efficiency of a dot in a photonic crystal cavity was measured to be 5 times greater via the tapered optical fiber compared to collection by a microscope objective lens above the cavity. The single photon source was also characterized by second order photon correlations measurements giving g(2)(0)=0.17 under non-resonant excitation. Numerical calculations demonstrate that the collection efficiency could be further increased by improving the dot-cavity coupling and by increasing the overlap length of the tapered fiber with the on-chip waveguide. An adiabatic coupling of near unity is predicted for an overlap length of 5 microns.

Self-Kerr effect across the yellow $\mathrm{Cu_2O}$ Rydberg series

We investigate the nonlinear refraction induced by Rydberg excitons in $\mathrm{Cu_2O}$. Using a high-precision interferometry imaging technique that spatially resolves the nonlinear phase shift, we observe significant shifts at extremely low laser intensity near each exciton resonance. From this, we derive the nonlinear index $\mathrm{n_2}$, present the $\mathrm{n_2}$ spectrum for $n\geq 5$ and report large $\mathrm{n_2}$ values of order $10^{-3}$ mm$^2$/mW. Moreover, we observe a rapid saturation of the Kerr nonlinearity and find that the saturation intensity $\mathrm{I_{sat}}$ decreases as $n^{-7}$. We explain this with the Rydberg blockade mechanism, whereby giant Rydberg interactions limit the exciton density, resulting in a maximum phase shift of 0.5 rad in our setup.
