Social Facilitation of Creative Reflection: AI-agents and Humans

Social collaboration can support people's reflection and is a crucial component of creativity. Creative technologies have been designed to support more collaborative ways of working, including using AI to simulate social partners. As human-AI creative collaborations increase, further investigation is needed into how different social interactions influence creative reflection and at which stage a social intervention is crucial to improve creative outcomes. Considering that non-verbal communication is the bedrock of human cognition and influence, non-verbal social dynamics should be examined in detail in the age of AI-companionship. For example, during social interaction, the social facilitation effect describes how the mere presence or observation of others influences how a person behaves and feels in the context. Whether changes in technology-mediated social environments influence how people reflect on their creative work needs further exploration, as does whether social AI-companionship elicits similar effects as humans. This paper discusses how theoretical mechanisms relating to social facilitation could influence creative practice and reflection, proposing ways of further testing these effects.

Creative Task Cards for Reflection, Self-Efficiency and Self-Regulation in CS1 Introductory Programming: Initial Insights

Computer Science students in introductory programming courses struggle with emotional challenges such as low levels of sustained interest and a lack of self-belief. However, students are typically introduced to disciplinary strategies (such as debugging strategies) and not the metacognitive nor self-regulation strategies that could help them overcome such emotional challenges. This paper addresses this issue by introducing creative task cards designed to support students' reflection, self-efficacy, and self-regulation in programming assignments. To evaluate the cards, twenty-nine students used them to complete a mock coding assignment in-class and participated in surveys and focus groups. Our initial qualitative insights suggest that students: found value in taking breaks, particularly when they could leave the classroom to reflect with peers; could use drawing to better reflect on feelings of cognitive overload; and felt more capable progressing with their work once breaking it into smaller steps.

Proceedings of The First Reflection in Creative Experience (RiCE) Workshop

Reflection and metacognition are central to the creative user experience. However, most HCI research on reflection focuses on clear, task-oriented goals such as to reflect on personal data or pedagogical outcomes. This contrasts with the open-ended and challenging to articulate goals of creative user experiences. For the first time, this workshop brings together interdisciplinary researchers, designers, educators, and artists across HCI, Cognitive Science, Design, AI, Learning Sciences, and Digital Art to examine reflection in creative interaction. The workshop will discuss themes, drawn from earlier discussions with HCI researchers and artists, on: how best to capture reflection in creative contexts, how to leverage the arts to support reflection for ethical change, and how to design creative AI that enhances - not hinders - critical thinking. By bringing interdisciplinary perspectives on reflection into discussion, the workshop will develop a guiding taxonomy for reflection in creative interaction to inform future creative practice and tool development.

Proceedings of The Fourth International Workshop on eXplainable AI for the Arts (XAIxArts 4)

The fourth workshop on Explainable AI for the Arts (XAIxArts) continues to bring together and expand a community of researchers and creative practitioners in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, AI, eXplainable AI (XAI), and Digital Arts to explore the role of XAI for the Arts. XAI is a key concern of Responsible and Human-Centred AI, emphasising HCI techniques that make opaque AI models more understandable to people. XAIxArts offers a distinctive lens to examine explainability through creative and artistic domains. The previous workshops explored the landscape and the speculative futures of AI in creative processes. To respond to emerging challenges and contribute to creative and societal transformation more broadly, this workshop focuses on the operationalisation of XAI in the Arts. Specifically, we will: i) critically reflect on emerging practices that encourage diversity and inclusivity in XAI; ii) collectively ideate a library of missing projects to encourage future collaborations and speculations; iii) scope the development of a resource hub for open XAIxArts projects to archive tangible XAI interventions and facilitate future community building with the wider discourse on Human-Centred AI.

Survey on the Evaluation of Generative Models in Music

Research on generative systems in music has seen considerable attention and growth in recent years. A variety of attempts have been made to systematically evaluate such systems. We present an interdisciplinary review of the common evaluation targets, methodologies, and metrics for the evaluation of both system output and model use, covering subjective and objective approaches, qualitative and quantitative approaches, as well as empirical and computational methods. We examine the benefits and limitations of these approaches from a musicological, an engineering, and an HCI perspective.

Human-Centered AI Communication in Co-Creativity: An Initial Framework and Insights

Effective communication between AI and humans is essential for successful human-AI co-creation. However, many current co-creative AI systems lack effective communication, which limits their potential for collaboration. This paper presents the initial design of the Framework for AI Communication (FAICO) for co-creative AI, developed through a systematic review of 107 full-length papers. FAICO presents key aspects of AI communication and their impact on user experience, offering preliminary guidelines for designing human-centered AI communication. To improve the framework, we conducted a preliminary study with two focus groups involving skilled individuals in AI, HCI, and design. These sessions sought to understand participants' preferences for AI communication, gather their perceptions of the framework, collect feedback for refinement, and explore its use in co-creative domains like collaborative writing and design. Our findings reveal a preference for a human-AI feedback loop over linear communication and emphasize the importance of context in fostering mutual understanding. Based on these insights, we propose actionable strategies for applying FAICO in practice and future directions, marking the first step toward developing comprehensive guidelines for designing effective human-centered AI communication in co-creation.

Improving User Experience with FAICO: Towards a Framework for AI Communication in Human-AI Co-Creativity

How AI communicates with humans is crucial for effective human-AI co-creation. However, many existing co-creative AI tools cannot communicate effectively, limiting their potential as collaborators. This paper introduces our initial design of a Framework for designing AI Communication (FAICO) for co-creative AI based on a systematic review of 107 full-length papers. FAICO presents key aspects of AI communication and their impacts on user experience to guide the design of effective AI communication. We then show actionable ways to translate our framework into two practical tools: design cards for designers and a configuration tool for users. The design cards enable designers to consider AI communication strategies that cater to a diverse range of users in co-creative contexts, while the configuration tool empowers users to customize AI communication based on their needs and creative workflows. This paper contributes new insights within the literature on human-AI co-creativity and Human-Computer Interaction, focusing on designing AI communication to enhance user experience.

Exploring XAI for the Arts: Explaining Latent Space in Generative Music

Explainable AI has the potential to support more interactive and fluid co-creative AI systems which can creatively collaborate with people. To do this, creative AI models need to be amenable to debugging by offering eXplainable AI (XAI) features which are inspectable, understandable, and modifiable. However, currently there is very little XAI for the arts. In this work, we demonstrate how a latent variable model for music generation can be made more explainable; specifically we extend MeasureVAE which generates measures of music. We increase the explainability of the model by: i) using latent space regularisation to force some specific dimensions of the latent space to map to meaningful musical attributes, ii) providing a user interface feedback loop to allow people to adjust dimensions of the latent space and observe the results of these changes in real-time, iii) providing a visualisation of the musical attributes in the latent space to help people understand and predict the effect of changes to latent space dimensions. We suggest that in doing so we bridge the gap between the latent space and the generated musical outcomes in a meaningful way which makes the model and its outputs more explainable and more debuggable.
