Q-systems and compact W*-algebra objects

We show that given a rigid C*-tensor category, there is an equivalence of categories between normalized irreducible Q-systems, also known as connected unitary Frobenius algebra objects, and compact connected W*-algebra objects. Although this result could be proved as a corollary of our previous article on realizations of algebra objects and discrete subfactors, we prove it here directly via categorical methods without passing through subfactor theory.

Operator algebras in rigid C*-tensor categories

In this article, we define operator algebras internal to a rigid C*-tensor category $\mathcal{C}$. A C*/W*-algebra object in $\mathcal{C}$ is an algebra object $\mathbf{A}$ in $\operatorname{ind}$-$\mathcal{C}$ whose category of free modules ${\sf FreeMod}_{\mathcal{C}}(\mathbf{A})$ is a $\mathcal{C}$-module C*/W*-category respectively. When $\mathcal{C}={\sf Hilb_{f.d.}}$, the category of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, we recover the usual notions of operator algebras. We generalize basic representation theoretic results, such as the Gelfand-Naimark and von Neumann bicommutant theorems, along with the GNS construction. We define the notion of completely positive maps between C*-algebra objects in $\mathcal{C}$ and prove the analog of the Stinespring dilation theorem. As an application, we discuss approximation and rigidity properties, including amenability, the Haagerup property, and property (T) for a connected W*-algebra $\mathbf{M}$ in $\mathcal{C}$. Our definitions simultaneously unify the definitions of analytic properties for discrete quantum groups and rigid C*-tensor categories.

Classification of Thurston-relation subfactor planar algebras

Bisch and Jones suggested the skein theoretic classification of planar algebras and investigated the ones generated by 2-boxes with the second author. In this paper, we consider 3-box generators and classify subfactor planar algebras generated by a non-trivial 3-box satisfying a relation proposed by Thurston. The subfactor planar algebras in the classification are either $E^6$ or the ones from representations of quantum $SU(N)$. We introduce a new method to determine positivity of planar algebras and new techniques to reduce the complexity of computations.

Quantum $G_{2}$ categories have property (T)

We show that the rigid C*-tensor categories of finite dimensional type 1 unitary representations of the quantum groups $U_{q}(\mathfrak{g}_{2})$ corresponding to the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ for positive $q\ne 1$ have property (T).

Annular representation theory for rigid $C^{*}$-tensor categories

We define annular algebras for rigid $C^{*}$-tensor categories, providing a unified framework for both Ocneanu's tube algebra and Jones' affine annular category of a planar algebra. We study the representation theory of annular algebras, and show that all sufficiently large (full) annular algebras for a category are isomorphic after tensoring with the algebra of matrix units with countable index set, hence have equivalent representation theories. Annular algebras admit a universal $C^{*}$-algebra closure analogous to the universal $C^{*}$-algebra for groups. These algebras have interesting corner algebras indexed by some set of isomorphism classes of objects, which we call centralizer algebras. The centralizer algebra corresponding to the identity object is canonically isomorphic to the fusion algebra of the category, and we show that the admissible representations of the fusion algebra of Popa and Vaes are precisely the restrictions of arbitrary (non-degenerate) $*$-representations of full annular algebras. This allows approximation and rigidity properties defined for categories by Popa and Vaes to be interpreted in the context of annular representation theory. This perspective also allows us to define "higher weight" approximation properties based on other centralizer algebras of an annular algebra. Using the analysis of annular representations due to Jones and Reznikoff, we identify all centralizer algebras for the $TLJ(δ)$ categories for $δ\ge 2$.

Discrete Homotopy Theory and Critical Values of Metric Spaces

Utilizing the discrete homotopy methods developed for uniform spaces by Berestovskii-Plaut, we define the critical spectrum Cr(X) of a metric space, generalizing to the non-geodesic case the covering spectrum defined by Sormani-Wei and the homotopy critical spectrum defined by Plaut-Wilkins. If X is geodesic, Cr(X) is the same as the homotopy critical spectrum, which differs from the covering spectrum by a factor of 3/2. The latter two spectra are known to be discrete for compact geodesic spaces, and correspond to the values at which certain special covering maps, called delta-covers (Sormani-Wei) or epsilon-covers (Plaut-Wilkins), change equivalence type. In this paper we initiate the study of these ideas for non-geodesic spaces, motivated by the need to understand the extent to which the accompanying covering maps are topological invariants. We show that discreteness of the critical spectrum for general metric spaces can fail in several ways, which we classify. The "newcomer" critical values for compact, non-geodesic spaces are completely determined by the homotopy critical values and refinement critical values, the latter of which can, in many cases, be removed by changing the metric in a bi-Lipschitz way.
