Optical microcavity characterization via resonance spectra and modes

This paper describes how resonance spectra and mode profiles can be used to characterize and quantify the mode-shaping effects in open-access plano-concave optical microcavities. The presented semi-analytic theory is based on the application of perturbation theory to the roundtrip evolution of the optical field. It includes various mirror-shape and nonparaxial effects and extends the nonparaxial theory presented by van Exter et al. (2022, Phys. Rev. A 106, 013501) and verified by Koks et al. (2022, Phys. Rev. A 105, 063502) to the common case of an anisotropic Gaussian mirror. The presented measurements and analyses of resonance spectra and mode profiles demonstrate how the different mode-shaping effects can be individually distinguished and quantified. Spin-orbit coupling, which is one of the nonparaxial effects, is prominently visible in the intriguing polarization patterns of the resonant modes, while polarization tomography yields the shape-induced birefringence and associated polarization splitting of the fundamental modes.

Systematic investigation of the generation of luminescent emitters in hBN via irradiation engineering

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a two-dimensional (2D) material, garners interest for hosting bright quantum emitters at room temperature. A great variety of fabrication processes have been proposed with various yields of quantum emitters. In this work, we study the influence of several parameters, such as irradiation energy, annealing environment, and the type of hBN, on the emitter density in hBN. Our results show (i) high emitter density with oxygen irradiation at 204 eV, (ii) post-annealing in carbon-rich atmospheres significantly increases emitter density, reinforcing carbon's potential role, (iii) no significant effect of oxygen pre-annealing, and (iv) a slightly increased emitter density from hBN crystals with lower structural quality. Although the precise origin of the emitters remains unclear, our study shows that oxygen irradiation and subsequent inert annealing in a carbon-rich environment play a crucial role in emitter generation, while the other processing parameters have a smaller influence. As such, our systematic study and findings show relevant advances towards the reproducible formation of visible-frequency quantum emitters in hBN.

Probing microcavity resonance spectra with intracavity emitters

We measure the fluorescence spectrum of broadband emitters in an open optical microcavity with radius of curvature R = 17.7(3) um and finesse F ~= 1000. This geometry enables a combined measurement of emission spectra versus cavity length, which has several benefits over measurements at fixed wavelength or fixed cavity length alone. We demonstrate the role of the optical penetration depths on the cavity modes and provide practical working equations for its analysis. Furthermore, we show the ability to measure the coupling of cavity modes within a small scan range of the cavity length. By measuring these cavity emission spectra as a function of cavity length, we thus obtain a rich and complete picture of the optical microcavity.
