Growth envelopes of some variable and mixed function spaces

We study unboundedness properties of functions belonging Lebesgue and Lorentz spaces with variable and mixed norms using growth envelopes. Our results extend the ones for the corresponding classical spaces in a natural way. In the case of spaces with mixed norms it turns out that the unboundedness in the worst direction, i.e., in the direction where $p_{i}$ is the smallest, is crucial. More precisely, the growth envelope is given by $E_G(L_{\vec{p}}(Ω)) = (t^{-1/\min\{p_{1}, \ldots, p_{d} \}},\min\{p_{1}, \ldots, p_{d} \})$ for mixed Lebesgue and $E_G(L_{\vec{p},q}(Ω)) = (t^{-1/\min\{p_{1}, \ldots, p_{d} \}},q)$ for mixed Lorentz spaces, respectively. For the variable Lebesgue spaces we obtain $E_G(L_{p(\cdot)}(Ω)) = (t^{-1/p_{-}},p_{-})$, where $p_{-}$ is the essential infimum of $p(\cdot)$, subject to some further assumptions. Similarly, for the variable Lorentz space it holds $E_G(L_{p(\cdot),q}(Ω)) = (t^{-1/p_{-}},q)$. The growth envelope is used for Hardy-type inequalities and limiting embeddings. In particular, as a by-product we determine the smallest classical Lebesgue (Lorentz) space which contains a fixed mixed or variable Lebesgue (Lorentz) space, respectively.

Properties of Kondratiev spaces

In this paper, we investigate Kondratiev spaces on domains of polyhedral type. In particular, we will be concerned with necessary and sufficient conditions for continuous and compact embeddings, and in addition we shall deal with pointwise multiplication in these spaces.

Besov regularity of parabolic and hyperbolic PDEs

This paper is concerned with the regularity of solutions to linear and nonlinear evolution equations on nonsmooth domains. In particular, we study the smoothness in the specific scale $\ B^r_{τ,τ}, \ \frac{1}τ=\frac{r}{d}+\frac{1}{p}\ $ of Besov spaces. The regularity in these spaces determines the approximation order that can be achieved by adaptive and other nonlinear approximation schemes. We show that for all cases under consideration the Besov regularity is high enough to justify the use of adaptive algorithms.

Symmetries on manifolds: Generalizations of the Radial Lemma of Strauss

For a compact subgroup $G$ of the group of isometries acting on a Riemannian manifold $M$ we investigate subspaces of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin type which are invariant with respect to the group action. Our main aim is to extend the classical Strauss lemma under suitable assumptions on the Riemannian manifold by proving that $G$-invariance of functions implies certain decay properties and better local smoothness. As an application we obtain inequalities of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type for $G$-invariant functions. Our results generalize those obtained by Skrzypczak. The main tool in our investigations are atomic decompositions adapted to the $G$-action in combination with trace theorems.

Sobolev spaces on Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry: General coordinates and traces

We study fractional Sobolev and Besov spaces on noncompact Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. Usually, these spaces are defined via geodesic normal coordinates which, depending on the problem at hand, may often not be the best choice. We consider a more general definition subject to different local coordinates and give sufficient conditions on the corresponding coordinates resulting in equivalent norms. Our main application is the computation of traces on submanifolds with the help of Fermi coordinates. Our results also hold for corresponding spaces defined on vector bundles of bounded geometry and, moreover, can be generalized to Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on manifolds, improving a result by Skrzypczak.

Non-smooth atomic decompositions, traces on Lipschitz domains, and pointwise multipliers in function spaces

We provide non-smooth atomic decompositions for Besov spaces $\Bd(\rn)$, $s>0$, $0<p,q\leq \infty$, defined via differences. The results are used to compute the trace of Besov spaces on the boundary $Γ$ of bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω$ with smoothness $s$ restricted to $0<s<1$ and no further restrictions on the parameters $p,q$. We conclude with some more applications in terms of pointwise multipliers.

Homogeneity property of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces

We consider the classical Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces defined via differences and prove a homogeneity property for functions with bounded support in the frame of these spaces. As the proof is based on compact embeddings between the studied function spaces we present also some results on the entropy numbers of these embeddings. Moreover, we derive some applications in terms of pointwise multipliers.
