Low frequency seeing and solar diameter measurements

The action of the atmospheric seeing is blurring, image stretching and image motion. This happens even to the image of the Sun which is more than half degree wide. Low frequency seeing components affect the solar diameter values measured either throught the drift-scan or the heliometer methods. We present evidences of image motion and stretching down to 0.001 Hz.

Solar astrometry: the status of art in 2011

Solar astrometry deals with the accurate measumerent of the solar diameter, and in general with the measurement of the shape of the Sun. During the last decades several techniques have been developed to monitor the radius and the irradiance of the Sun: meridian transits, telescopes in drift-scan mode, solar astrolabes, balloons, and satellites dedicated to the measurements of the solar diameter, and space measurements of the total solar irradiance are now performed to know the relationship radius-luminosity for the Sun in this evolutionary stage of its life. The feedback of solar astrometry in climate studies is of paramount importance. The status of art in the various fields of research here adressed is outlined.

The astrometric recognition of the solar Clementine gnomon (1702)

The Clementine gnomon has been built in 1702 to measure the Earth's obliquity variation. For this reason the pinhole was located in the walls of Diocletian's times (305 a. D.) in order to remain stable along the centuries, but its original form and position have been modified. We used an astrometric method to recover the original position of the pinhole: reshaping the pinhole to a circle of 1.5 cm of diameter, the positions of the Northern and Southern limbs have been compared with the ephemerides. A sistematic shift of 4.5 mm Southward of the whole solar image shows that the original pinhole was 4.5 mm North of the actual position, as the images in the Bianchini's book (1703) suggest. The oval shape of the actual pinhole is also wrong. Using a circle the larger solar spots are clearly visible. Some reference stars of the catalogue of Philippe de la Hire (1702), used originally for measuring the ecliptic latitude of the Sun, are written next to the meridian line, but after the last restauration (2000), four of them are wrongly located. Finally the deviation from the true North, of the meridian line's azimuth confirms the value recovered in 1750. This, with the local deviations of a true line, will remain as systematic error, like for all these historical instruments.

Gerbert of Aurillac: astronomy and geometry in tenth century Europe

Gerbert of Aurillac was the most prominent personality of the tenth century: astronomer, organ builder and music theoretician, mathematician, philosopher, and finally pope with the name of Silvester II (999-1003). Gerbert introduced firstly the arabic numbers in Europe, invented an abacus for speeding the calculations and found a rational approximation for the equilateral triangle area, in the letter to Adelbold here discussed. Gerbert described a semi-sphere to Constantine of Fleury with built-in sighting tubes, used for astronomical observations. The procedure to identify the star nearest to the North celestial pole is very accurate and still in use in the XII century, when "Computatrix" was the name of Polaris. For didactical purposes the Polaris would have been precise enough and much less time consuming, but here Gerbert was clearly aligning a precise equatorial mount for a fixed instrument for accurate daytime observations. Through the sighting tubes it was possible to detect equinoxes and solstices by observing the Sun in the corresponding days. The horalogium of Magdeburg was probably a big and fixed-mount nocturlabe, always pointing the star near the celestial pole.

Solar diameter with 2012 Venus transit

The role of Venus and Mercury transits is crucial to know the past history of the solar diameter. Through the W parameter, the logarithmic derivative of the radius with respect to the luminosity, the past values of the solar luminosity can be recovered. The black drop phenomenon affects the evaluation of the instants of internal and external contacts between the planetary disk and the solar limb. With these observed instants compared with the ephemerides the value of the solar diameter is recovered. The black drop and seeing effects are overcome with two fitting circles, to Venus and to the Sun, drawn in the undistorted part of the image. The corrections of ephemerides due to the atmospheric refraction will also be taken into account. The forthcoming transit of Venus will allow an accuracy on the diameter of the Sun better than 0.01 arcsec, with good images of the ingress and of the egress taken each second. Chinese solar observatories are in the optimal conditions to obtain valuable data for the measurement of the solar diameter with the Venus transit of 5/6 June 2012 with an unprecedented accuracy, and with absolute calibration given by the ephemerides.

A new approach for the heliometric optics

The heliometer of Fraunhofer in Koenigsberg (1824) is a refractor in which the lens is split into two halves to which is applied a linear displacement along the cut. Later in 1890s a variation of the heliometer has been realized in Goettingen using a beam splitting wedge: these methods were both subjected to chromatic and refractive aberrations; the second configuration being much less affected by thermal fluctuations. The mirrored version of the heliometer conceived at the Observatorio Nacional of Rio de Janeiro overcome these problems: the two halves of the vitrified ceramic mirror split at a fixed heliometric angle produce the two images of the Sun exempt of chromatisms and distortions. The heliometer of Rio is a telescope which can rotate around its axis, to measure the solar diameter at all heliolatitudes. A further development of that heliometer, now under construction, is the annular heliometer, in which the mirrors are concentric, with symmetrical Point Spread Functions. Moreover the location of the Observatory of Rio de Janeiro allows zenithal observations, with no atmospheric refraction at all heliolatitudes, in December and January.

Astronomia di Posizione per Muoni, Algoritmi per foglio elettronico (Positional Astronomy for Muons, Algorithms for electronic spreadsheet)

The muons of cosmic rays air showers in the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) project are detected with three Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) with good tracking capability. These muon telescopes are located in high schools spread all over Italy. The detection of extensive air showers is made by means of time coincidences between two distant telescopes. The vectorial components of the incoming directions of the muons are known, as well as the UTC time of their arrival on the detectors. The method to calculate the celestial (equatorial and galactic) coordinates of the incoming direction of the muons is presented. This procedure allows recovering galactic or extragalactic sources of the extreme energetic cosmic rays which produce such extensive air showers. A worksheet file (muoni.xls or EEEtest.xls) contains a simulator, to produce data in the same format. This introductory method to positional astronomy for muons, useful also for neutrinos, is presented through explained formulae and an interactive worksheet, tailored for the data format of EEE (http://www.centrofermi.it/eee/).

Eclipse, solar limb darkening function and diameter measurements: toward a unified approach

In order to perform high resolution astrometry of the solar diameter from the ground, through the observations of eclipses, the study of the limb darkening profile is described. Knowing the profile of the solar limb is useful both to monitor the solar radius over time, and to define the oblateness, which is interesting for the classical tests of general relativity. The Limb Darkening Function (LDF) is studied in order to find the inflexion point, to which the measurements of the solar diameter are referred. The proposed method is applied to the videos of the annular eclipse in January, 15, 2010. This new method might solve the ambiguity of some eclipse obervations made with different instruments, where the measured solar diameter was clearly dependent on the aperture of the telescope and on the density of the filter used.

Solar limb darkening function and solar diameter with eclipses observations

We introduce a new method to perform high resolution astrometry of the solar diameter from the ground, through the observations of eclipses. A discussion of the solar diameter and its variations is linked to the Limb Darkening Function (LDF) using the luminosity evolution of a Baily's Bead and the profile of the lunar limb available from satellite data. The inflexion point of the LDF is defined as the solar limb. The method proposed is applied for the videos of the eclipse in January, 15, 2010 recorded by Richard Nugent in Uganda and Andreas Tegtmeier in India. An upper limit for the inflexion point position has been set for that eclipse.

Measuring the position of the center of the Sun at the Clementine Gnomon of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome

The Clementine Gnomon in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome has been realized in 1702 with the aim to measure the variation of the obliquity of the Earth axis along the forthcoming centuries. Since then the church and the instrument undergone several restorations and the original conditions of the pinhole changed. The measurements of the position of the image in the days before and of the 2011 winter solstice with respect to the original markers compared with the ephemerides gives us the North-South correction for the position of the pinhole to be restored.

The CLAVIUS Four Centennial Meeting and XXXI ESOP

The XXXI European Symposium on Occultation Projects will be celebrated in ICRANet center of Pescara from 24 to 27 August 2012 (www.icranet.org/clavius2012). The occasion is the fourth centennial of the Jesuit astronomer Christopher Clavius (Bamberg 1538- Napoli 1612). The hybrid eclipse witnessed by Clavius in Rome (1567) and published on his Commentarius on the Sphere (1581 edition) was the first account of an annular eclipse ever published in a scientific book. To account of this eclipse a larger solar diameter for 1567 has to be considered, and the scientific debate is still open. This is the trait-d'union between Clavius and ESOP annual meeting. The city of Pescara and the region of Abruzzo are presented with an historical, climatic, religious and gastronomical outline.

The partial asteroidal occultation of Betelgeuse on Jan 2, 2012

The asteroid (147857) 2005 UW381 will pass over the supergiant star Betelgeuse on January 2nd 2012. The event is visible on a limited geographical region, and the magnitude drop is only 0.01 magnitudes for a maximum duration of 3.6 seconds. The opportunity to measure this phenomenon can be interesting for dealing with extrasolar planetary transits.

Differential photometry of delta Scorpii during 2011 periastron

Hundred observations of Delta Scorpii over 200 days, from April 2 to October 16, 2011, have been made for AAVSO visually and digitally from Rio de Janeiro, Rome and Paris. The three most luminous pixels either of the target star and the two reference stars are used to evaluate the magnitude through differential photometry. The main sources of errors are outlined. The system of Delta Scorpii, a spectroscopic double star, has experienced a close periastron in July 2011 within the outer atmospheres of the two giant components. The whole luminosity of Delta Scorpii system increased from about Mv=1.8 to 1.65 peaking around 5 to 15 July 2011, but there are significant rapid fluctuations of 0.2 - 0.3 magnitudes occurring in 20 days that seem to be real, rather than a consequence of systematic errors due to the changes of reference stars and observing conditions. This method is promising for being applied to other bright variable stars like Betelgeuse and Antares. After August the magnitude remained constant at Mv=1.8 until the last observation on October 16 made in twilight from Rome.

Solar Limb Darkening Function from Baily's Beads Observations

We introduce a method to measure with high resolution the solar diameter from the ground, through the eclipse observations by reconsidering the definition of the solar edge. The outer part of the Limb Darkening Function (LDF) is recovered using the luminosity evolution of a Baily's Bead and the profile of the lunar limb available from the Kaguya satellite. The method proposed is applied for the videos of the eclipse in January, 15, 2010 recorded by Richard Nugent in Uganda and Andreas Tegtmeier in India. The result shows light from solar limb detected at least 0.65 arcsec beyond the LDF inflection point, and this fact may suggest to reconsider the evaluations of the historical eclipses made with naked eye.
