Exophobic Quasi-Realistic Heterotic String Vacua

We demonstrate the existence of heterotic-string vacua that are free of massless exotic fields. The need to break the non-Abelian GUT symmetries in k=1 heterotic-string models by Wilson lines, while preserving the GUT embedding of the weak-hypercharge and the GUT prediction sin^2θ_w(M(GUT))=3/8, necessarily implies that the models contain states with fractional electric charge. Such states are severely restricted by observations, and must be confined or sufficiently massive and diluted. We construct the first quasi-realistic heterotic-string models in which the exotic states do not appear in the massless spectrum, and only exist, as they must, in the massive spectrum. The SO(10) GUT symmetry is broken to the Pati-Salam subgroup. Our PS heterotic-string models contain adequate Higgs representations to break the GUT and electroweak symmetry, as well as colour Higgs triplets that can be used for the missing partner mechanism. By statistically sampling the space of Pati-Salam vacua we demonstrate the abundance of quasi--realistic three generation models that are completely free of massless exotics, rendering it plausible that obtaining realistic Yukawa couplings may be possible in this space of models.

Induced superstring cosmologies and moduli stabilization

We extend the analysis of the recently obtained stringy cosmological solutions induced by thermal and quantum effects, once space-time supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by geometrical fluxes. Cases in which more than one modulus participating in the supersymmetry breaking mechanism are investigated. The free energy is obtained at the full string level. In the intermediate cosmological region where the temperature and the supersymmetry breaking scale are sufficiently smaller than the Hagedorn temperature, the quantum and thermal corrections are under control and calculable. The reason is that the contributions to the effective potential of the moduli that are not participating in the supersymmetry breaking are exponentially suppressed. The backreaction on the initially flat background results in many cases into cosmological evolutions, where the dynamics of all complex structure moduli is frozen. The solutions describe effectively a radiation dominated era, where thermal effects are never negligible, even if the temperature tends to zero at late times. We analyze several types of supersymmetry breaking patterns and examine the stability of the corresponding radiation era.

Thermal/quantum effects and induced superstring cosmologies

We consider classical superstring theories on flat four dimensional space-times, and where N=4 or N=2 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. We obtain the thermal and quantum corrections at the string one-loop level and show that the back-reaction on the space-time metric induces a cosmological evolution. We concentrate on heterotic string models obtained by compactification on a T^6 torus and on T^6/Z_2 orbifolds. The temperature T and the supersymmetry breaking scale M are generated via the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism on the Euclidean time cycle and on an internal spatial cycle respectively. The effective field theory corresponds to a no-scale supergravity, where the corresponding no-scale modulus controls the Susy-breaking scale. The classical flatness of this modulus is lifted by an effective thermal potential, given by the free energy. The gravitational field equations admit solutions where M, T and the inverse scale factor 1/a of the universe remain proportional. In particular the ratio M/T is fixed during the time evolution. The induced cosmology is governed by a Friedmann-Hubble equation involving an effective radiation term ~1/a^4 and an effective curvature term ~1/a^2, whose coefficients are functions of the complex structure ratio M/T.

Attraction to a radiation-like era in early superstring cosmologies

Starting from an initial classical four dimensional flat background of the heterotic or type II superstrings, we are able to determine at the string one-loop level the quantum corrections to the effective potential due to the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry by "geometrical fluxes". Furthermore, considering a gas of strings at finite temperature, the full "effective thermal potential" is determined, giving rise to an effective non-trivial pressure. The backreaction of the quantum and thermal corrections to the space-time metric as well as to the moduli fields induces a cosmological evolution that depends on the early time initial conditions and the number of spontaneously broken supersymmetries. We show that for a whole set of initial conditions, the cosmological solutions converge at late times to two qualitatively different trajectories: They are either attracted to (i) a thermal evolution similar to a radiation dominated cosmology, implemented by a coherent motion of some moduli fields, or to (ii) a "Big Crunch" non-thermal cosmological evolution dominated by the non-thermal part of the effective potential or the moduli kinetic energy. During the attraction to the radiation-like era, periods of accelerated cosmology can occur. However, they do not give rise to enough inflation (e-fold < 0.2) for the models we consider, where N>1 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken to N=0.

Orbifold Symmetry Reductions of Massive Boson-Fermion Degeneracy

We investigate the existence of string vacua with Massive Spectrum Degeneracy Symmetry (MSDS) in Heterotic and Type II orbifold constructions. We present a classification of all possible Z_2^N-orbifolds with MSDS symmetry that can be constructed in the formalism of the 2d free fermionic construction. We explicitly construct several two-dimensional models whose Reduced Massive Spectrum Degeneracy Symmetry (RMSDS) is due to a set of Z_2-orbifold projections induced naturally in the framework of the free fermionic construction. In all proposed models the massive boson and fermion degrees of freedom exhibit Massive Spectrum Degeneracy Symmetry while the number of massless bosons n(b) and massless fermions n(f) are different; n(b) neq n(f). This property distinguishes the MSDS Z_2-twisted theories from ordinary supersymmetric ones. Some comments are stated concerning the large marginal (J x barJ)-deformations of the proposed models connecting them to higher-dimensional gauged-supergravity theories with non-trivial geometrical fluxes.

Massive Boson-Fermion Degeneracy and the Early Structure of the Universe

The existence of a new kind of massive boson-fermion symmetry is shown explicitly in the framework of the heterotic, type II and type II orientifold superstring theories. The target space-time is two-dimensional. Higher dimensional models are defined via large marginal deformations of JxJ-type. The spectrum of the initial undeformed two dimensional vacuum consists of massless boson degrees of freedom, while all massive boson and fermion degrees of freedom exhibit a new Massive Spectrum Degeneracy Symmetry (MSDS). This precise property, distinguishes the MSDS theories from the well known supersymmetric SUSY-theories. Some proposals are stated in the framework of these theories concerning the structure of: (i) The Early Non-singular Phase of the Universe, (ii) The two dimensional boundary theory of AdS3 Black-Holes, (iii) Plausible applications of the MSDS theories in particle physics, alternative to SUSY.

Spinor-Vector Duality in Heterotic SUSY Vacua

We elaborate on the recently discovered spinor-vector duality in realistic free fermionic heterotic vacua. We emphasize the interpretation of the freely-acting orbifolds carried out on the six internal dimensions as coordinate-dependent compactifications; they play a central role in the duality, especially because of their ability to break the right-moving superconformal algebra of the space-time supersymmetric heterotic vacua. These considerations lead to a simple and intuitive proof of the spinor-vector duality, and to the formulation of explicit rules to find the dual of a given model. We discuss the interest of such a duality, notably concerning the structure of the space of vacua of superstring theory.

Thermal and quantum superstring cosmologies

We consider four dimensional heterotic string backgrounds for which supersymmetry is spontaneously broken via the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism on an internal spatial cycle and by finite temperature effects. We concentrate on initially flat backgrounds with N=4 and N=2 amount of supersymmetry. Thermal and quantum corrections give rise to a non-trivial cosmological evolution. We show that these corrections are under control and calculable due to the underlying no-scale structure of the effective supergravity theory. The effective Friedmann-Hubble equation involves a radiation term ~1/a^4 and a curvature term ~1/a^2, whose coefficients are functions of ratio of the gravitino mass scale to the temperature.

Magic N=2 supergravities from hyper-free superstrings

We show by explicit construction the existence of various four dimensional models of type II superstrings with N=2 supersymmetry, purely vector multiplet spectrum and no hypermultiplets. Among these, two are of special interest, at the field theory level they correspond to the two exceptional N=2 supergravities of the magic square that have the same massless scalar field content as pure N=6 supergravity and N=3 supergravity coupled to three extra vector multiplets. The N=2 model of the magic square that is associated to N=6 supergravity is very peculiar since not only the scalar degrees of freedom but all the bosonic massless degrees of freedom are the same in both theories. All presented hyper-free N=2 models are based on asymmetric orbifold constructions with N=(4,1) world-sheet superconformal symmetry and utilize the 2d fermionic construction techniques. The two exceptional N=2 models of the magic square are constructed via a "twisting mechanism" that eliminates the extra gravitini of the N=6 and N=3 extended supergravities and creates at the same time the extra spin-1/2 fermions and spin-1 gauge bosons which are necessary to balance the numbers of bosons and fermions. Theories of the magic square with the same amount of supersymmetry in three and five space-time dimensions are constructed as well, via stringy reduction and oxidation from the corresponding four-dimensional models.

Gaugino Condensates and Fluxes in N = 1 Effective Superpotentials

In the framework of orbifold compactifications of heterotic and type II orientifolds, we study effective N = 1 supergravity potentials arising from fluxes and gaugino condensates. These string solutions display a broad phenomenology which we analyze using the method of N = 4 supergravity gaugings. We give examples in type II and heterotic compactifications of combined fluxes and condensates leading to vacua with naturally small supersymmetry breaking scale controlled by the condensate, cases where the supersymmetry breaking scale is specified by the fluxes even in the presence of a condensate and also examples where fluxes and condensates conspire to preserve supersymmetry.

Inflationary de Sitter solutions from superstrings

In the framework of superstring compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry spontaneously broken, (by either geometrical fluxes, branes or else), we show the existence of new inflationary solutions. The time-trajectory of the scale factor of the metric a, the supersymmetry breaking scale m=m(Phi) and the temperature T are such that am and aT remain constant. These solutions request the presence of special moduli-fields: i) The universal "no-scale-modulus" Phi, which appears in all N=1 effective supergravity theories and defines the supersymmetry breaking scale m(Phi). ii) The modulus Phi_s, which appears in a very large class of string compactifications and has a Phi-dependent kinetic term. During the time evolution, a^4 rho_s remains constant as well, (rho_s being the energy density induced by the motion of Phi_s). The cosmological term Lambda(am), the curvature term k(am, aT) and the radiation term c_R=a^4 rho are dynamically generated in a controllable way by radiative and temperature corrections; they are effectively constant during the time evolution. Depending on Lambda, k and c_R, either a first or second order phase transition can occur in the cosmological scenario. In the first case, an instantonic Euclidean solution exists and connects via tunneling the inflationary evolution to another cosmological branch. The latter starts with a big bang and, in the case the transition does not occur, ends with a big crunch. In the second case, the big bang and the inflationary phase are smoothly connected.

Spinor-Vector Duality in N=2 Heterotic String Vacua

Classification of the N=1 space-time supersymmetric fermionic Z2XZ2 heterotic-string vacua with symmetric internal shifts, revealed a novel spinor-vector duality symmetry over the entire space of vacua, where the S_t <-> V duality interchanges the spinor plus anti-spinor representations with vector representations. In this paper we demonstrate that the spinor--vector duality exists also in fermionic Z2 heterotic string models, which preserve N=2 space-time supersymmetry. In this case the interchange is between spinorial and vectorial representations of the unbroken SO(12) GUT symmetry. We provide a general algebraic proof for the existence of the S_t <-> V duality map. We present a novel basis to generate the free fermionic models in which the ten dimensional gauge degrees of freedom are grouped into four groups of four, each generating an SO(8) modular block. In the new basis the GUT symmetries are produced by generators arising from the trivial and non--trivial sectors, and due to the triality property of the SO(8) representations. Thus, while in the new basis the appearance of GUT symmetries is more cumbersome, it may be more instrumental in revealing the duality symmetries that underly the string vacua.

Instanton transition in thermal and moduli deformed de Sitter cosmology

We consider the de Sitter cosmology deformed by the presence of a thermal bath of radiation and/or time-dependent moduli fields. Depending on the parameters, either a first or second order phase transition can occur. In the first case, an instanton allows a double analytic continuation. It induces a probability to enter the inflationary evolution by tunnel effect from another cosmological solution. The latter starts with a big bang and, in the case the transition does not occur, ends with a big crunch. A temperature duality exchanges the two cosmological branches. In the limit where the pure de Sitter universe is recovered, the tunnel effect reduces to a "creation from nothing", due to the vanishing of the big bang branch. However, the latter may be viable in some range of the deformation parameter. In the second case, there is a smooth evolution from a big bang to the inflationary phase.

A Wave-function for Stringy Universes

We define a wave-function for string theory cosmological backgrounds. We give a prescription for computing its norm following an earlier analysis within general relativity. Under Euclidean continuation, the cosmologies we discuss in this paper are described in terms of compact parafermionic worldsheet systems. To define the wave-function we provide a T-fold description of the parafermionic conformal field theory, and of the corresponding string cosmology. In specific examples, we compute the norm of the wave-function and comment on its behavior as a function of moduli.

Chiral family classification of fermionic Z2xZ2 heterotic orbifold models

Free fermionic construction of four dimensional string vacua, are related to the Z2XZ2 orbifolds at special points in the moduli space, and yielded the most realistic three family string models to date. Using free fermionic construction techniques we are able to classify more than 10^10 string vacua by the net family and anti-family number. Using a montecarlo technique we find that a bell shaped distribution that peaks at vanishing net number of chiral families. We also observe that ~15% of the models have three net chiral families. We find that in addition to mirror symmetry that the distribution exhibits a symmetry under the exchange of (spinor plus anti-spinor) representations with vectorial representations.

Spinor-Vector Duality in fermionic Z2XZ2 heterotic orbifold models

We continue the classification of the fermionic Z2XZ2 heterotic string vacua with symmetric internal shifts. The space of models is spanned by working with a fixed set of boundary condition basis vectors and by varying the sets of independent Generalized GSO (GGSO) projection coefficients (discrete torsion). This includes the Calabi-Yau like compactifications with (2,2) world-sheet superconformal symmetry, as well as more general vacua with only (2,0) superconformal symmetry. In contrast to our earlier classification that utilized a montecarlo technique to generate random sets of GGSO phases, in this paper we present the results of a complete classification of the subclass of the models in which the four dimensional gauge group arises solely from the null sector. In line with the results of the statistical classification we find a bell shaped distribution that peaks at vanishing net number of generations and with ~15% of the models having three net chiral families. The complete classification reveals a novel spinor-vector duality symmetry over the entire space of vacua. The S <-> V duality interchanges the spinor plus anti-spinor representations with vector representations. We present the data that demonstrates the spinor-vector duality. We illustrate the existence of a duality map in a concrete example. We provide a general algebraic proof for the existence of the S <-> V duality map. We discuss the case of self-dual solutions with an equal number of vectors and spinors, in the presence and absence of E6 gauge symmetry, and present a couple of concrete examples of self-dual models without E6 symmetry.

Superpotentials in IIA compactifications with general fluxes

We derive the effective N=1, D=4 supergravity for the seven main moduli of type IIA orientifolds with D6 branes, compactified on T^6/(Z_2xZ_2) in the presence of general fluxes. We illustrate and apply a general method that relates the N=1 effective Kahler potential and superpotential to a consistent truncation of gauged N=4 supergravity. We identify the correspondence between various admissible fluxes, N=4 gaugings and N=1 superpotential terms. We construct explicit examples with different features: in particular, new IIA no-scale models and a model which admits a supersymmetric AdS_4 vacuum with all seven main moduli stabilized.

Electric/Magnetic Deformations of S^3 and AdS_3, and Geometric Cosets

We analyze asymmetric marginal deformations of SU(2)_k and SL(2,R)_k WZW models. These appear in heterotic string backgrounds with non-vanishing Neveu--Schwarz three-forms plus electric or magnetic fields, depending on whether the deformation is elliptic, hyperbolic or parabolic. Asymmetric deformations create new families of exact string vacua. The geometries which are generated in this way, deformed S^3 or AdS_3, include in particular geometric cosets such as S^2, AdS_2 or H_2. Hence, the latter are consistent, exact conformal sigma models, with electric or magnetic backgrounds. We discuss various geometric and symmetry properties of the deformations at hand as well as their spectra and partition functions, with special attention to the supersymmetric AdS_2 x S^2 background. We also comment on potential holographic applications.
