Targeted mixing in an array of alternating vortices

Transport and mixing properties of passive particles advected by an array of vortices are investigated. Starting from the integrable case, it is shown that a special class of perturbations allows one to preserve separatrices which act as effective transport barriers, while triggering chaotic advection. In this setting, mixing within the two dynamical barriers is enhanced while long range transport is prevented. A numerical analysis of mixing properties depending on parameter values is performed; regions for which optimal mixing is achieved are proposed. Robustness of the targeted mixing properties regarding errors in the applied perturbation are considered, as well as slip/no-slip boundary conditions for the flow.

Enhancement of particle trapping in the wave-particle interaction

The saturated dynamics of a Single-Pass Free Electron Laser is considered within a simplified mean-field approach. A method is proposed to increase the size of the macro-particle, which is responsible for the oscillations of the intensity of the wave. This approach is based on the reconstruction of invariant tori of the dynamics of test particles. To this aim a dedicated control term is derived, the latter acting as a small apt perturbation of the system dynamics. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the optimization of the laser source.

From chaos of lines to Lagrangian structures in flux conservative fields

A numerical method is proposed in order to track field lines of three-dimensional divergence free fields. Field lines are computed by a locally valid Hamiltonian mapping, which is computed using a symplectic scheme. The method is theoretically valid everywhere but at points where the field is null or infinite. For any three dimensional flux conservative field for which problematic points are sufficiently sparse, a systematic procedure is proposed and implemented. Construction of field lines is achieved by means of tracers and the introduction of various Hamiltonians adapted to the "geometrical state" each line or tracer is. The states are artificially defined by an a priori given frame of reference and Cartesian coordinates, and refer to a Hamiltonian which is locally valid at the time step to be computed. This procedure ensures the preservation of the volume (flux condition) during the iteration. This method is first tested with an ABC-type flow. Its benefits when compared to typical Runge-Kutta scheme are demonstrated. Potential use of the method to exhibit "coherent" Lagrangian structures in a chaotic setting is shown. An illustration to the computation of magnetic field lines resulting from a three-dimensional MHD simulation is also provided.

Control of chaotic advection

A method of chaos reduction for Hamiltonian systems is applied to control chaotic advection. By adding a small and simple term to the stream function of the system, the construction of invariant tori has a stabilization effect in the sense that these tori act as barriers to diffusion in phase space and the controlled Hamiltonian system exhibits a more regular behaviour.

Stabilizing the intensity of a wave amplified by a beam of particles

The intensity of an electromagnetic wave interacting self-consistently with a beam of charged particles as in a free electron laser, displays large oscillations due to an aggregate of particles, called the macro-particle. In this article, we propose a strategy to stabilize the intensity by re-shaping the macro-particle. This strategy involves the study of the linear stability (using the residue method) of selected periodic orbits of a mean-field model. As parameters of an additional perturbation are varied, bifurcations occur in the system which have drastic effect on the modification of the self-consistent dynamics, and in particular, of the macro-particle. We show how to obtain an appropriate tuning of the parameters which is able to strongly decrease the oscillations of the intensity without reducing its mean-value.

Phase space structures and ionization dynamics of hydrogen atom in elliptically polarized microwaves

The multiphoton ionization of hydrogen atoms in a strong elliptically polarized microwave field exhibits complex features that are not observed for ionization in circular and linear polarized fields. Experimental data reveal high sensitivity of ionization dynamics to the small changes of the field polarization. The multidimensional nature of the problem makes widely used diagnostics of dynamics, such as Poincaré surfaces of section, impractical. We analyze the phase space dynamics using finite time stability analysis rendered by the fast Lyapunov Indicators technique. The concept of zero--velocity surface is used to initialize the calculations and visualize the dynamics. Our analysis provides stability maps calculated for the initial energy at the maximum and below the saddle of the zero-velocity surface. We estimate qualitatively the dependence of ionization thresholds on the parameters of the applied field, such as polarization and scaled amplitude.

Channeling chaotic transport in a wave-particle experiment

A numerical and experimental study of a control method aimed at channeling chaos by building barriers in phase space is performed on a paradigm for wave-particle interaction, i.e., a traveling wave tube. Control of chaotic diffusion is achieved by adding small apt modifications to the system with a low additional cost of energy. This modification is realized experimentally through additional waves with small amplitudes. Robustness of the method is investigated both numerically and experimentally.

Variational method for locating invariant tori

We formulate a variational fictitious-time flow which drives an initial guess torus to a torus invariant under given dynamics. The method is general and applies in principle to continuous time flows and discrete time maps in arbitrary dimension, and to both Hamiltonian and dissipative systems.

Reducing or enhancing chaos using periodic orbits

A method to reduce or enhance chaos in Hamiltonian flows with two degrees of freedom is discussed. This method is based on finding a suitable perturbation of the system such that the stability of a set of periodic orbits changes (local bifurcations). Depending on the values of the residues, reflecting their linear stability properties, a set of invariant tori is destroyed or created in the neighborhood of the chosen periodic orbits. An application on a paradigmatic system, a forced pendulum, illustrates the method.

Control of stochasticity in magnetic field lines

We present a method of control which is able to create barriers to magnetic field line diffusion by a small modification of the magnetic perturbation. This method of control is based on a localized control of chaos in Hamiltonian systems. The aim is to modify the perturbation locally by a small control term which creates invariant tori acting as barriers to diffusion for Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom. The location of the invariant torus is enforced in the vicinity of the chosen target. Given the importance of confinement in magnetic fusion devices, the method is applied to two examples with a loss of magnetic confinement. In the case of locked tearing modes, an invariant torus can be restored that aims at showing the current quench and therefore the generation of runaway electrons. In the second case, the method is applied to the control of stochastic boundaries allowing one to define a transport barrier within the stochastic boundary and therefore to monitor the volume of closed field lines.

Chaotic advection and targeted mixing

The advection of passive tracers in an oscillating vortex chain is investigated. It is shown that by adding a suitable perturbation to the ideal flow, the induced chaotic advection exhibits two remarkable properties compared with a generic perturbation : Particles remain trapped within a specific domain bounded by two oscillating barriers (suppression of chaotic transport along the channel), and the stochastic sea seems to cover the whole domain (enhancement of mixing within the rolls).

Channelling chaos by building barriers

Chaos often represents a severe obstacle for the set-up of many-body experiments, e.g., in fusion plasmas or turbulent flows. We propose a strategy to control chaotic diffusion in conservative systems. The core of our approach is a small apt modification of the system which channels chaos by building barriers to diffusion. It leads to practical prescriptions for an experimental apparatus to operate in a regular regime (drastic enhancement of confinement). The experimental realization of this control on a Travelling Wave Tube opens the possibility to practically achieve the control of a wide range of systems at a low additional cost of energy.

A Hamiltonian system for interacting Benjamin-Feir resonances

In this paper, we present a model describing the time evolution of two dimensional surface waves in gravity and infinite depth. The model of six interacting modes derives from the normal form of the system describing the dynamics of surface waves and is governed by a Hamiltonian system of equations of cubic order in the amplitudes of the waves. We derive a Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom from this Hamiltonian using conserved quantities. The interactions are those of two coupled Benjamin-Feir resonances. The temporal evolution of the amplitude of the different modes is described according to the parameters of the system. In particular, we study the energy exchange produced by the modulations of the amplitudes of the modes. The evolution of the modes reveals a chaotic dynamics.

Localised control for non-resonant Hamiltonian systems

We present a method of localised control of chaos in Hamiltonian systems. The aim is to modify the perturbation locally by a small control term which makes the controlled Hamiltonian more regular. We provide an explicit expression for the control term which is able to recreate invariant (KAM) tori without modifying other parts of phase space. We apply this method of localised control to a forced pendulum model, to the delta-kicked rotor (standard map) and to a non-twist Hamiltonian.

Tailoring Phase Space : A Way to Control Hamiltonian Transport

We present a method to control transport in Hamiltonian systems. We provide an algorithm - based on a perturbation of the original Hamiltonian localized in phase space - to design small control terms that are able to create isolated barriers of transport without modifying other parts of phase space. We apply this method of localized control to a forced pendulum model and to a system describing the motion of charged particles in a model of turbulent electric field.
