Planar AdS multi-NUT spacetimes and Kaluza-Klein multi-monopoles

In higher-dimensional Einstein-AdS gravity, it is well known that planar and static anti-de Sitter black holes can be endowed with multiple rotation parameters via a large-gauge transformation. However, a similar prescription fails when multiple NUT parameters are added, thereby obstructing the study of holographic properties with more than one NUT charge. To pave the way towards this direction, we construct explicit planar AdS spacetimes having multiple NUT parameters in two simple ways that allow one to circumvent the strong restrictions imposed by the vacuum field equations. First, motivated by momentum relaxation holographic models, we construct multi-NUT spaces in AdS with flat horizons by adding free scalar fields possessing an axionic profile. In our second approach, we build similar configurations in Einstein gravity with quadratic-curvature corrections. We end by presenting planar versions of the Kaluza-Klein monopole in AdS with different magnetic charges. As a byproduct, our strategy yields a simple way to generalize the Gross-Perry-Sorkin monopole to include the cosmological constant.

Thermodynamic Phase Transitions in Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

Although asymptotically flat black holes generically lack thermodynamic phase transitions, we show that curvature-induced scalarization of electrically charged black holes in Einstein-Maxwell- Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory provides a natural setting for nontrivial thermodynamic behavior, without invoking external confining mechanisms or an extended thermodynamic formalism. Working within the canonical ensemble and employing the Euclidean approach, we identify the coexistence of locally stable scalarized and small Reissner-Nordström thermal states, which promotes free-energy crossings to bona fide phase transitions between equilibrium phases. For weak coupling, a second-order phase transition coincides with the second bifurcation point, at which the scalarized branch reconnects with the Reissner-Nordström branch and scalar hair is spontaneously shed. As the coupling strength increases, this transition becomes zeroth order, the scalarized branch shrinks, and a fish-like structure develops in its Helmholtz free energy, rendering locally stable thermal states partially metastable, and yielding up to three phase transitions. In the strong-coupling limit, the scalarized branch reduces to a Schwarzschild-like solution, and the Reissner-Nordström phase ultimately emerges as the sole thermodynamically preferred configuration

Reverse stealth construction and its thermodynamic imprints

We study a class of solutions within the context of modified gravity theories, characterized by a non-trivial field that does not generate any back-reaction on the metric. These stealth configurations are effectively defined by the stealth conditions, which correspond to a vanishing stress-energy tensor. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to constructing this class of solutions. In contrast to the standard procedure, the starting point requires satisfying the stealth conditions for a given ansatz independently of the gravitational dynamics. This approach simultaneously determines the non-trivial field and the geometries capable of supporting it as a stealth configuration. Consequently, a gravity model can accommodate a stealth field only if its vacuum solution falls within the geometries permissible under stealth conditions. By applying this reverse procedure in the non-minimal $Rϕ^2$ coupling, we recover all previously known stealth configurations and present new solutions. Although it seems intuitive to assume that this ``gravitationally undetectable'' scalar field leaves no physical traces, it remarkably reveals thermodynamic imprints, as its presence screens the black hole mass and modifies the entropy according to the first law.

Revisiting Fractional Cosmology

Recently, the research community has been exploring fractional calculus to address problems related to cosmology; in this approach, the gravitational action integral is altered, leading to a modified Friedmann equation, then the resulting theory is compared against observational data. In this context, dynamical systems can be used along with an analysis the phase spaces for different values of the fractional order of the derivative and their different matter contents. The equilibrium points are classified, providing a range for the order of the fractional derivative in order to investigate whether the cosmological history can be reconstructed and a late-time accelerating power-law solution obtained for the scale factor. In this paper, we discuss the physical interpretation of the corresponding cosmological solutions with particular emphasis on the influence of the fractional order of the derivative in a theory of gravity that includes a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity. The presented results improve and extend those obtained previously, further demonstrating that fractional calculus can play a relevant role in cosmology.

EFT Approach to Black Hole Scalarization and its Compatibility with Cosmic Evolution

We address the issue of black hole scalarization and its compatibility with cosmic inflation and big bang cosmology from an effective field theory (EFT) point of view. In practice, using a well-defined and healthy toy model which (in part) has been broadly considered in the literature, we consider how higher-order theories of gravity, up to cubic operators in Riemann curvature, fit within this context. Interestingly enough, we find that already at this minimal level, there is a non-trivial interplay between the Wilson coefficients which are otherwise completely independent, constraining the parameter space where scalarization may actually occur. Conclusively, we claim that the EFT does exhibit black hole scalarization, remaining compatible with the inflationary paradigm, and admitting General Relativity as a cosmological attractor.

Phase transitions of black strings in dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity

We study conserved charges and thermodynamics of analytic rotating anti-de Sitter black holes with extended horizon topology -- also known as black strings -- in dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity. The solution is supported by a scalar field with an axionic profile that depends linearly on the coordinate that spans the string. We compute conserved charges by making use of the renormalized boundary stress-energy tensor. Then, by adopting the Noether-Wald formalism, we compute the black string entropy and obtain its area law. Indeed, the reduced Euclidean Hamiltonian approach shows that these methods yield a consistent first law of thermodynamics. Additionally, we derive a Smarr formula using a radial conservation law associated to the scale invariance of the reduced action and obtain a Cardy formula for the black string. A first-order phase transition takes place at a critical temperature between the ground state and the black string, above which the black string is the thermodynamically favored configuration.

BTZ black hole with KdV-type boundary conditions: Thermodynamics revisited

The thermodynamic properties of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole endowed with Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-type boundary conditions are considered. This familiy of boundary conditions for General Relativity on AdS$_{3}$ is labeled by a non-negative integer $n$, and gives rise to a dual theory which possesses anisotropic Lifshitz scaling invariance with dynamical exponent $z=2n+1$. We show that from the scale invariance of the action for stationary and circularly symmetric spacetimes, an anisotropic version of the Smarr relation arises, and we prove that it is totally consistent with the previously reported anisotropic Cardy formula. The set of KdV-type boundary conditions defines an unconventional thermodynamic ensemble, which leads to a generalized description of the thermal stability of the system. Finally, we show that at the self-dual temperature $T_{s}= \frac{1}{2π}(\frac{1}{z})^{\frac{z}{z+1}}$, there is a Hawking-Page phase transition between the BTZ black hole and thermal AdS$_{3}$ spacetime.

Axionic black branes with conformal coupling

We find neutral and charged black branes solutions with axion fields in the context of a conformally coupled gravitational theory in four dimensions. These solutions describe AdS black branes supported by axion fields that break translational invariance at the boundary, providing for momentum dissipation. The conformally coupled scalar field is regular inside and outside the event horizon and there is no need of any self-interaction, obtaining in this way solutions without fine-tuned parameters. We analyze the thermodynamics of our solutions considering the effects of the axion charges and it is shown that axionic and electric charges must be related such that the conformal scalar field does not contribute to the mass. We compute the holographic DC conductivity and we show how it is affected by the inclusion of the conformal scalar field, which provides a temperature independent behavior. We include a non-linear axionic contribution given by a k-essence term that modifies the DC conductivity providing for more general behaviors. Finally, we endorse our solutions with rotation showing that angular momentum is sustained by the axion charges.

Electrically charged black hole on AdS$_3$: scale invariance and the Smarr formula

The Einstein-Maxwell theory with negative cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions is considered. It is shown that the Smarr relation for the electrically charged BTZ black hole emerges from two different approaches based on the scaling symmetry of the asymptotic behaviour of the fields at infinity. In the first approach, we prove that the conservation law associated to the scale invariance of the action for a class of stationary and circularly symmetric configurations, allows to obtain the Smarr formula as long as a special set of holographic boundary conditions is satisfied. This particular set is singled out making the integrability conditions for the energy compatible with the scale invariance of the reduced action. In the second approach, it is explicitly shown that the Smarr formula is recovered through the Euler theorem for homogeneous functions, provided the same set of holographic boundary conditions is fulfilled.

A differential geometry approach to asymmetric transmission of light

In the last ten years, the technology of differential geometry, ubiquitous in gravitational physics, has found its place in the field of optics. It has been successfully used in the design of optical metamaterials, through a technique now known as "transformation optics". This method, however, only applies for the particular class of metamaterials known as impedance matched, that is, materials whose electric permittivity is equal to their magnetic permeability. In that case, the material may be described by a spacetime metric. In the present work we will introduce a generalization of the geometric methods of transformation optics to situations in which the material is not impedance matched. In such situation, the material -or more precisely, its constitutive tensor- will not be described by a metric only. We bring in a second tensor, with the local symmetries of the Weyl tensor, the "$W$-tensor". In the geometric optics approximation we show how the properties of the $W$-tensor are related to the asymmetric transmission of the material. We apply this feature into the design of a particularly interesting set of asymmetric materials. These materials are birefringent when light rays approach the material in a given direction, but behave just like vacuum when the rays have the opposite direction with the appropriate polarization (or, in some cases, independently of the polarization).

A class of rotating hairy black holes in arbitrary dimensions

A class of exact rotating black hole solutions of gravity nonminimally coupled to a self-interacting scalar field in arbitrary dimensions is presented. These spacetimes are asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter manifolds and have a Ricci-flat event horizon hiding a curvature singularity at the origin. The scalar field is real and regular everywhere and its effective mass, coming from the nonminimal coupling with the scalar curvature, saturates the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound for the corresponding spacetime dimension. The rotating black hole is obtained by applying an improper coordinate transformation to the static one. Although both spacetimes are locally equivalent, they are globally different, as it is confirmed by the nonvanishing angular momentum of the rotating black hole. It is found that the mass is bounded from below by the angular momentum in agreement with the existence of an event horizon. The thermodynamical analysis is carried out in the grand canonical ensemble. The first law is satisfied and a Smarr formula is exhibited. The thermodynamical local stability of the rotating hairy black holes is established from their Gibbs free energy. However, the global stability analysis establishes that the vacuum spacetime is always preferred over the hairy black hole. Thus, the hairy black hole is likely to decay into the vacuum one for any temperature.

Boson stars in biscalar extensions of Horndeski gravity

This paper is concerned with the construction and analysis of boson stars in the context of nonminimal derivative coupling theories. In particular we embed our model in the biscalar extension of Horndeski gravity, considering a scalar field theory displaying a nonminimally coupled kinetic term given by the Einstein tensor. We focus on the case where the potential is given by a mass term only, and when a six order self-interaction is included. In the latter case we consider specific couplings in the self-interacting terms in such a way that our self-interaction is given by a positive definite potential presenting two degenerate local vacua. We show how solutions can be obtained and we compare its principal properties with standard configurations constructed with the usual minimally coupled kinetic term.

Asymptotically locally AdS and flat black holes in the presence of an electric field in the Horndeski scenario

Asymptotically locally AdS and asymptotically flat black hole solutions are found for a particular case of the Horndeski action. The action contains the Einstein-Hilbert term with a cosmological constant, a real scalar field with a non minimal kinetic coupling given by the Einstein tensor, the minimal kinetic coupling and the Maxwell term. There is no scalar potential. The solution has two integration constants related with the mass and the electric charge. The solution is given for all dimensions. A new class of asymptotically locally flat spherically symmetric black holes is found when the minimal kinetic coupling vanishes and the cosmological constant is present. In this case we get a solution which represents an electric Universe. The electric field at infinity is only supported by $Λ$. When the cosmological constant vanishes the black hole is asymptotically flat.
