Junction conditions for higher order gravity theories from a Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term

In this work we study the problem of generalizing the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary terms for general quadratic theories of gravity and propose a simple condition to obtain them. From these terms we derive the junction conditions for a subset of this family of theories that includes Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity. We re-obtain the well-known results for GB theory, generalize them to other quadratic theories and compare the resulting junction conditions with the ones already derived in the literature using other methods

On the central singularity of the BTZ geometries

The nature of the central singularity of the BTZ geometries -- stationary vacuum solutions of 2+1 gravity with negative cosmological constant $Λ=-\ell^{-2}$ and $SO(2)\times \mathbb{R}$ isometry -- is discussed. The essential tool for this analysis is the holonomy operator on a closed path (i.e., Wilson loop) around the central singularity. The study considers the holonomies for the Lorentz and AdS$_3$ connections. The analysis is carried out for all values of the mass $M$ and angular momentum $J$, namely, for black holes ($M \ell \ge |J|$) and naked singularities ($M \ell < |J|$). In general, both Lorentz and AdS$_3$ holonomies are nontrivial in the zero-radius limit revealing the presence of delta-like singularity at the origin in the curvature and torsion two-forms. However, in the cases $M\pm J/\ell=-n_{\pm}^2$, with $n_{\pm} \in \mathbb{N}$, recently identified in \cite{GMYZ} as BPS configurations, the AdS$_3$ holonomy reduces to the identity. Nevertheless, except for the AdS$_{3}$ spacetime ($M=-1$, $J=0$), all BTZ geometries have a central singularity which is not revealed by local operations.

Gravity coupled to a scalar field from a Chern-Simons action: describing rotating hairy black holes and solitons with gauge fields

Einstein gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field with a two-parameter Higgs-like self-interaction in three spacetime dimensions is recast in terms of a Chern-Simons form for the algebra $g^{+}\oplus g^{-}$ where, depending on the sign of the self-interaction couplings, $g^{\pm}$ can be $so(2,2)$, $so(3,1)$ or $iso(2,1)$. The field equations can then be expressed through the field strength of non-flat composite gauge fields, and conserved charges are readily obtained from boundary terms in the action that agree with those of standard Chern-Simons theory for pure gravity, but with non-flat connections. Regularity of the fields then amounts to requiring the holonomy of the connections along contractible cycles to be trivial. These conditions are automatically fulfilled for the scalar soliton and allow to recover the Hawking temperature and chemical potential in the case of the rotating hairy black holes presented here, whose entropy can also be obtained by the same formula that holds in the case of a pure Chern-Simons theory. In the conformal (Jordan) frame the theory is described by General Relativity with cosmological constant conformally coupled to a self-interacting scalar field, and its formulation in terms of a Chern-Simons form for suitably composite gauge fields is also briefly addressed.

Overspinning naked singularities in AdS$_3$ spacetime

The BTZ black hole belongs to a family of locally three-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS$_3$) spacetimes labeled by their mass $M$ and angular momentum $J$. The case $M \ell \geq |J|$, where $\ell$ is the anti-de Sitter radius, provides the black hole. Extending the metric to other values of of $M$ and $J$ leads to geometries with the same asymptotic behavior and global symmetries, but containing a naked singularity at the origin. The case $M \ell \leq -|J|$ corresponds to spinning conical singularities that are reasonably well understood. Here we examine the remaining case, that is $-|J|<M\ell<|J|$. These naked singularities are mathematically acceptable solutions describing classical spacetimes. They are obtained by identifications of the covering pseudosphere in $\mathbb{R}^{2,2}$ and are free of closed timelike curves. Here we study the causal structure and geodesics around these \textit{overspinning} geometries. We present a review of the geodesics for the entire BTZ family. The geodesic equations are completely integrated, and the solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. Special attention is given to the determination of circular geodesics, where new results are found. According to the radial bounds, eight types of noncircular geodesics appear in the BTZ spacetimes. For the case of overspinning naked singularity, null and spacelike geodesics can reach infinity passing by a point nearest to the singularity, others extend from the central singularity to infinity, and others still have a radial upper bound and terminate at the singularity. Timelike geodesics cannot reach infinity; they either loop around the singularity or fall into it. The spatial projections of the geodesics (orbits) exhibit self-intersections, whose number is determined for null and spacelike geodesics, and it is found a special class of timelike geodesics whose spatial projections are closed.

Geodesic Structure of Naked Singularities in AdS$_3$ Spacetime

We present a complete study of the geodesics around naked singularities in AdS$_3$, the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. These stationary spacetimes, characterized by two conserved charges --mass and angular momentum--, are obtained through identifications along spacelike Killing vectors with a fixed point. They are interpreted as massive spinning point particles, and can be viewed as three-dimensional analogues of cosmic strings in four spacetime dimensions. The geodesic equations are completely integrated and the solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. We classify different geodesics in terms of their radial bounds, which depend on the constants of motion. Null and spacelike geodesics approach the naked singularity from infinity and either fall into the singularity or wind around and go back to infinity, depending on the values of these constants, except for the extremal and massless cases for which a null geodesic could have a circular orbit. Timelike geodesics never escape to infinity and do not always fall into the singularity, namely, they can be permanently bounded between two radii. The spatial projections of the geodesics (orbits) exhibit self-intersections, whose number is particularly simple for null geodesics. As a particular application, we also compute the lengths of fixed-time spacelike geodesics of the static naked singularity using two different regularizations.

Quantum-corrected black holes and naked singularities in (2+1)-dimensions

We analytically investigate the pertubative effects of a quantum conformally-coupled scalar field on rotating (2+1)-dimensional black holes and naked singularities. In both cases we obtain the quantum-backreacted metric analytically. In the black hole case, we explore the quantum corrections on different regions of relevance for a rotating black hole geometry. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the ergosphere, as well as to a reduction of the angular velocity compared to their corresponding unperturbed values. Quantum corrections also give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. In the naked singularity case, quantum effects lead to the formation of a horizon that hides the conical defect, thus turning it into a black hole. The fact that these effects occur not only for static but also for spinning geometries makes a strong case for the rôle of quantum mechanics as a cosmic censor in Nature.

Quantum Backreaction on Three-Dimensional Black Holes and Naked Singularities

We analytically investigate backreaction by a quantum scalar field on two rotating Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) geometries: that of a black hole and that of a naked singularity. In the former case, we explore the quantum effects on various regions of relevance for a rotating black hole space-time. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the radius of the ergosphere, and to a reduction of the angular velocity, compared to the unperturbed values. Furthermore, they give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. In the case of a naked singularity, we find that quantum effects lead to the formation of a horizon that shields it, thus supporting evidence for the rôle of quantum mechanics as a cosmic censor in nature.

Quantum dress for a naked singularity

We investigate semiclassical backreaction on a conical naked singularity space-time with a negative cosmological constant in (2+1)-dimensions. In particular, we calculate the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field on such naked singularity space-time. We then obtain the backreacted metric via the semiclassical Einstein equations. We show that, in the regime where the semiclassical approximation can be trusted, backreaction dresses the naked singularity with an event horizon, thus enforcing cosmic censorship.

Stealth Scalar Field Overflying a 2+1 Black Hole

A nontrivial scalar field configuration of vanishing energy-momentum is reported. These matter configurations have no influence on the metric and therefore they are not be "detected" gravitationally. This phenomenon occurs for a time-dependent nonminimally coupled and self-interacting scalar field on the 2+1 (BTZ) black hole geometry. We conclude that such stealth configurations exist for the static 2+1 black hole for any value of the nonminimal coupling parameter $ζ\neq0$ with a fixed self-interaction potential $U_ζ(Φ)$. For the range $0<ζ\leq1/2$ potentials are bounded from below and for the range $0<ζ<1/4$ the stealth field falls into the black hole and is swallowed by it at an exponential rate, without any consequence for the black hole.

Gravitational Cheshire effect: Nonminimally coupled scalar fields may not curve spacetime

It is shown that flat spacetime can be dressed with a real scalar field that satisfies the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation without curving spacetime. Surprisingly, this possibility arises from the nonminimal coupling of the scalar field with the curvature, since a footprint of the coupling remains in the energy-momentum tensor even when gravity is switched off. Requiring the existence of solutions with vanishing energy-momentum tensor fixes the self-interaction potential as a local function of the scalar field depending on two coupling constants. The solutions describe shock waves and, in the Euclidean continuation, instanton configurations in any dimension. As a consequence of this effect, the tachyonic solutions of the free massive Klein-Gordon equation become part of the vacuum.

Birkhoff's Theorem for Three-Dimensional AdS Gravity

All three-dimensional matter-free spacetimes with negative cosmological constant, compatible with cyclic symmetry are identified. The only cyclic solutions are the 2+1 (BTZ) black hole with SO(2) x R isometry, and the self-dual Coussaert-Henneaux spacetimes, with isometry groups SO(2) x SO(2,1) or SO(2) x SO(2).

Geodesic Structure of the 2 + 1 Black Hole

Null and timelike geodesics around a 2+1 black hole are determined. Complete geodesics of both types exist in the rotating black-hole background, but not in the spinless case. Upper and lower bounds for the radial size of the orbits are given in all cases and the possibility of passing from one black hole exterior spacetime to another is discussed using the Penrose diagrams. An analysis of particle motions by means of effective potentials and orbit graphs are also included.
