Refractors in anisotropic media associated with norms

We show existence of interfaces between two anisotropic materials so that light is refracted in accordance with a given pattern of energy. To do this we formulate a vector Snell law for anisotropic media when the wave fronts are given by norms for which the corresponding unit spheres are strictly convex.

Reflection and refraction problems for metasurfaces related to Monge-Ampère equations

A metasurface is a surface, tipically a plane, on which a function called phase discontinuity is chosen so that the metasurface produces a desired reflection or refraction job. We derive the equations that the phase discontinuity function must satisfy, they are Monge-Ampère partial differential equations, and we prove existence of solutions.

On the existence of dichromatic single element lenses

Due to dispersion, light with different wavelengths, or colors, is refracted at different angles. Our purpose is to determine when is it possible to design a lens made of a single homogeneous material so that it refracts light superposition of two colors into a desired fixed final direction. Two problems are considered: one is when light emanates in a parallel beam and the other is when light emanates from a point source. For the first problem, and when the direction of the parallel beam is different from the final desired direction, we show that such a lens does not exist; otherwise we prove the solution is trivial, i.e., the lens is confined between two parallel planes. For the second problem we prove that is impossible to design such a lens when the desired final direction is not among the set of incident directions. Otherwise, solving an appropriate system of functional equations we show that a local solution exists.

General Refraction Problems with Phase Discontinuity

This paper provides a mathematical approach to study metasurfaces in non flat geometries. Analytical conditions between the curvature of the surface and the set of refracted directions are introduced to guarantee the existence of phase discontinuities. The approach contains both the near and far field cases. A starting point is the formulation of a vector Snell law in presence of abrupt discontinuities on the interfaces.

$C^{1,α}$ estimates for the parallel refractor

We consider the parallel refractor problem when the planar radiating source lies in a medium having higher refractive index than the medium in which the target is located. We prove local $C^{1,α}$ estimates for parallel refractors under suitable geometric assumptions on the source and target, and under local regularity hypotheses on the target set. We also discuss existence of refractors under energy conservation assumptions.

Aspherical lens design and imaging

We design freeform lenses refracting an arbitrarily given incident field into a given fixed direction. In the near field case, we study the existence of lenses refracting a given bright object into a predefined image. We also analyze the existence of systems of mirrors that solve the near field and the far field problems for reflection.

Uniform Refraction in Negative Refractive Index Materials

We study the problem of constructing an optical surface separating two homogeneous, isotropic media, one of which has a negative refractive index. In doing so, we develop a vector form of Snell's law, which is used to study surfaces possessing a certain uniform refraction property, both in the near and far field cases. In the near field problem, unlike the case when both materials have positive refractive index, we show that the resulting surfaces can be neither convex nor concave.

The Near Field Refractor

We present an abstract method in the setting of compact metric spaces which is applied to solve a number of problems in geometric optics. In particular, we solve the one source near field refraction problem. That is, we construct surfaces separating two homogenous media with different refractive indices that refract radiation emanating from the origin into a target domain contained in an n-1 dimensional hypersurface. The input and output energy are prescribed. This implies the existence of lenses focusing radiation in a prescribed manner.

The reflector problem and the inverse square law

We introduce a model to design reflectors that take into account the inverse square law for radiation. We prove existence of solutions, both in the near and far field cases, when the input and output energies are prescribed.

On the second order derivatives of convex functions on the Heisenberg group

In the Euclidean setting the celebrated Aleksandrov-Busemann-Feller theorem states that convex functions are a.e. twice differentiable. In this paper we prove that a similar result holds in the Heisenberg group, by showing that every continuous H-convex function belongs to the class of functions whose second order horizontal distributional derivatives are Radon measures. Together with a recent result by Ambrosio and Magnani, this proves the existence a.e. of second order horizontal derivatives for the class of continuous H-convex functions in the Heisenberg group.

Maximum and comparison principles for convex functions on the Heisenberg group

We prove estimates, similar in form to the classical Aleksandrov estimates, for a Monge-Ampere type operator on the Heisenberg group. A notion of normal mapping does not seem to be available in this context and the method of proof uses integration by parts and oscillation estimates that lead to the construction of an analogue of Monge-Ampere measures for convex functions in the Heisenberg group.
