Emergent Metric-like States of Active Particles with Metric-free Polar Alignment

We study a model of self-propelled particles interacting with their $k$ nearest neighbors through polar alignment. By exploring its phase space as a function of two nondimensional parameters (alignment strength $g$ and Peclet number $\mathrm{Pe}$), we identify two distinct order-disorder transitions. One is continuous, occurs at a low critical $g$ value independent of Pe, and resembles a mean-field transition with no density-order coupling. The other is discontinuous, depends on a combined control parameter involving $g$ and Pe, and results from the formation of small, dense, highly persistent clusters of particles that follow metric-like dynamics. These dense clusters form at a critical value of the combined control parameter $\mathrm{Pe}/g^α$, with $α\approx 1.5$, which appears to be valid for different alignment-based models. Our study shows that models of active particles with metric-free interactions can produce characteristic length-scales and self-organize into metric-like collective states that undergo metric-like transitions.

Forcing function control of Faraday wave instabilities in viscous shallow fluids

We investigate the relationship between the linear surface wave instabilities of a shallow viscous fluid layer and the shape of the periodic, parametric-forcing function (describing the vertical acceleration of the fluid container) that excites them. We find numerically that the envelope of the resonance tongues can only develop multiple minima when the forcing function has more than two local extrema per cycle. With this insight, we construct a multi-frequency forcing function that generates at onset a non-trivial harmonic instability which is distinct from a subharmonic response to any of its frequency components. We measure the corresponding surface patterns experimentally and verify that small changes in the forcing waveform cause a transition, through a bicritical point, from the predicted harmonic short-wavelength pattern to a much larger standard subharmonic pattern. Using a formulation valid in the lubrication regime (thin viscous fluid layer) and a WKB method to find its analytic solutions, we explore the origin of the observed relation between the forcing function shape and the resonance tongue structure. In particular, we show that for square and triangular forcing functions the envelope of these tongues has only one minimum, as in the usual sinusoidal case.

Dynamical Phase Transition in a Neural Network Model with Noise: an Exact Solution

The dynamical organization in the presence of noise of a Boolean neural network with random connections is analyzed. For low levels of noise, the system reaches a stationary state in which the majority of its elements acquire the same value. It is shown that, under very general conditions, there exists a critical value of the noise, below which the network remains organized and above which it behaves randomly. The existence and nature of the phase transition are computed analytically, showing that the critical exponent is 1/2. The dependence of the critical noise on the parameters of the network is obtained. These results are then compared with two numerical realizations of the network.
